Book Review The History of Karate: Goju-Ryu by Morio Higaonna
Thousand Oaks, CA: Dragon Books, 1995, 226pp, 6" x 9" illus. (paperback) $34.95
BOOK REVIEW by Dr. Robert Dohrenwend.
Reproduced here by kind permission of Via Media Publishing Company, this review is reprinted from the Journal of Asian Martial Arts, Volume 8, Number 2, 1999, pp. 96-99.
Higaonna Morio is a figure of such imposing stature in the world of karate that he genuinely needs no introduction. The result of decades of research into the history of Goju-ryu, his book is based on information he received while training as a young student, hundreds of hours of interviews with senior Okinawan karateka and instructors, and personal research carried out in China. Higaonna's book is the closest thing available in English to primary source for the early period of Okinawan karate. It is fortunate that Higaonna, a native speaker of the Okinawan language and a highly respected karateka of extraordinary skill and understanding, was inspired to do this research during a period when the older Okinawan karateka were still alive. It was a unique combination of opportunity and skills. The book is of very high quality and well illustrated. The paper is of excellent quality, and the pages are sewn, not merely glued. The cover is durable and attractive. This book is designed to be solid. It will withstand frequent readings without appreciable wear or damage. And this is a good thing.

http://www.kobukaijujitsu.com/grapplingstyles.html
WORLD GRAPPLING STYLES GENERAL HISTORY OF GRAPPLING Although grappling was done all over the world, the first "famous" styles were introduced to the Greek Olympic Games in 704 BC. Grappling had come to the Roman Empire through the Etruscans and had slowly evolved. Roman wrestling influenced the rather static Greek form and used military tactics such as upright takedowns. The old Greek style was much like Brazilian Jiu-Jujitsu today, which spends most of the match on the ground. The word Roman in Greco-Roman wrestling, however is a mistranslation of greek word "romi" referring to "valor & strength". Other ancient forms of European wrestling can be found in the British Isles dating back as far as 1829 BC. Wrestling forms called "Strong Arm Fighting" became famous, and even used specific grappling uniforms with thick collared jackets and waistbands. Other grappling styles in ancient Europe were GLIMA from the Norse and SCHWINGEN from Switzerland. There is also mention of grappling matches among the Scots and Irish. India had an ancient form of grappling from around 11 AD. Indian wrestling is known as Pahalwani or Mallavidya. Some Indians also practice a lesser known grappling art called Vajra-Musti.

    The History of Pankration
    Ancient Pankration Pankration History:
The Word Pankration is a Greek word, which translated means "all powers", or "all powerful", both are acceptable translation by Greek scholars. Pankration was a sporting event in the ancient Greek Olympic games that was first introduced in the games of 648 BC. The rules of the sport were simple, no biting or eye gouging and victory was secured through knockout, submission or death. The historical records of the early Pankration are shrouded and mixed with Greek mythology and it is not known whether these accounts of championship bouts and feats of strength of the champions were myth or actual accounts. What is known is that just like the boxers and wrestlers of the Olympic games the Pankration competitors refined their skills for many generations through hundreds of years and became extremely proficient and elements of their sport including ground fighting and submission holds to standing fighting with all types of strikes. Many of the holds two distinct historical pictures. The first is the fighters which is 2000 years old, and the second is the key which is symbolic of the hand grip technique used is ancient times. The ancient Olympic games were intertwined with many ceremonies and connections to the worship of gods that were pagan to the rising Christian population. Because of this association and the rise of Christianity the games eventually came to a halt and along with it Pankration competition disappeared many centuries.

Pankration Gallery Pankration (Wrestling) The Greek race is certainly well-known for its athletic and military achievements in the PreChristian era. In truth, we must credit them for both the word "athlete" and the ideal it expresses. It was also the Greek soldier who would represent the standard for the rest of the world to follow for centuries. The contribution of the Greeks to the evolution of the martial arts, as we presently know them, is now certainly evident. Fighting systems that have originated in both Eastern and Western parts of the world may indeed be linked to this ancient combat form. Kicking was an essential part of pankration, especially rising kicks to the groin or stomach, and powerful leg sweeps meant to take an opponent off his feet. Kicks above the belt were used sparingly, with blows aimed to the head or face only when one's adversary was on the ground and too weakened to block or catch the attacker's foot. Due to this unique tactic alone, some combative experts credit pankration as the first comprehensive unarmed fighting system on record. Pankration bouts were extremely brutal and sometimes life-threatening to the competitors. Rules were minimal in number. In addition, there were no weight divisions and no time limits. The fighting arena or "ring" was no more than twelve to fourteen-feet square to encourage close-quarter action. Referees were armed with stout rods or switches to enforce the rules against biting and gouging. The rules, however, were often broken by some participants who, realizing they were outclassed by a heavier and stronger foe, would resort to such measures to escape being seriously maimed. The contest itself continued uninterrupted until one of the combatants either surrendered, suffered unconsciousness, or, of course, was killed.

(Using Shootfighting Rules) You will be hearing a lot more about Pankration as we get closer to 2004! PANKRATION pan-kray'shun Greek "Game of all powers" Pankration is a Greek word meaning "All strength" ( pan = all, kratos = strength; it also has a synonym - pammachon - which means "total fight". There were three combative sports in the ancient Greek Olympics. Wrestling was introduced in 708 b.c. in the 18th Olympiad, the same year the "pentathlon" was introduced. Boxing was admitted in 688 in the 23rd Olympiad. Pankration is the most well-documented fighting art of the pre-Christian era. It was introduced at the 33rd Olympiad in 648 b.c., the same year horse racing was introduced. In boxing until the 5th century b.c. a boxer's only protection was strips of leather about ten to twelve feet long, which were wrapped around the hands . They were called himantes and offered little protection to the hand. NOTE: In modern boxing the length of the taping or wrap is 120": ten feet!
