PANKRATION ATHLIMA: THE REBIRTH OF THE 'SPORT OF GODS'
A new sport...several thousand years old, returns to unify all forms of martial arts
Abody and heart made of steel. A trained body and spirit. A unifying force for the martial arts. These are all the things that the recently resurrected ancient Greek art of unarmed combat, "Pankration Athlima", can offer. One of the oldest sports of the ancient Olympic Games, Pankration hopes to unify all martial arts and become the symbol of a new era in sports, deriving its roots from history.
"Martial arts can be united by returning to their roots. The Pankration Athlima offers such unity in order to achieve a common cause. That is what the Olympic Games are about," said Supesh Gopi, from India, one of the 22 national representatives who participated in the founding congress of the International Federation of Pankration Athlima (IFPA), that took place from April 12-17 in Lamia, central Greece.
Pankration was first mentioned in the ancient poem "Argonautica", which researchers believe contains information dating back to the 12th millennium BC. Young Greeks used to practice this form of martial art form in most of the city-states of ancient Greece. Pankration is both a sport and, at the same time, an art of war. In fact, ancient amphorae from classical Greece depict images that are very similar to present forms of martial arts, such as karate, Okinawa, kung fu etc. The sport's name is derived from the Greek words, PAN and KRATOS and means, "the one who has the power, the one who wins with total strength and knowledge."

Pankration's Road to the Olympic Games
by Nick Browne
First introduced into the Ancient Olympic Games during the 33rd Olympiad in 648 B.C., pankration soon became known as the king of Olympic events, with its champions retiring in luxury after successful careers, supported by the city-states they had represented. Pankration enjoyed that exalted status for over 1,000 years. Today, a world-wide movement is underway to restore pankration to its rightful place - as a full medal sport in the modern Olympic Games. are Olympic events today, it's unbelievable that pankration is not Modern pankration owes its existence to Jim Arvanitis, a Greek-American who developed an interest in the ancient sport and combat training of his ancestral homeland. His interest led to his developement of the system of Mu Tau Pankration, a complete martial training system which included a full spectrum of skill sets accompanied by a cultural and philosophical dimension that makes Mu Tau a true martial system. Since the early 1970's, Arvanitis, who coined the modernized term pankration (from the old
pagratio
), carried the torch of pankration essentially alone, driven by the pride he had in his Greek heritage and his dedication to the system he had developed. His ground-breaking promotion of applicable mixed martial arts preceeded the current MMA movement by almost three decades.

Pankration wrestling was one of the contests held on the fourth day. It may seem very violent to us, but it was very popular among the ancient Greeks. It was a kind of wrestling with hardly any rules. Biting and eye gouging were officially banned, though some competitors tried to get away with it. One of the pankration fighters in the middle is about to be stopped by the trainer on the right. Why do you think this? Clue - remember the rules) This wine cup was made in Athens between 500-475 BC. It's decorated with scenes of athletes training. Privacy
