London (UW) - A disabled man is nearing completion of a 3,200 mile circumnavigation of Britain - on a handcycle. Paraplegic David Abrutat has powered his specially designed machine the length and breadth of the country in his Around Britain Challenge. The former RAF serviceman has recruited thousands of volunteers to give blood on his tour, while also raising money for the Royal British Legion. He is to complete his marathon journey where it began on May 10 this year - on London's Tower Bridge. Abrutat, 28, wanted to give something back to the blood service - and the Legion, after he was nearly killed in a road accident in March 2000. He needed 20 units of blood to survive but was left paralysed. Since then, he has overcome his disability and is scheduled to complete the Challenge in just 87 days, well ahead of schedule. Supported by a team of helpers, he has handcycled along the country's coastal roads, covering the same distance as between Cardiff and New York. He has averaged 37 miles each day. On his longest day he covered 95 miles one day between Newcastle and his hometown of Scarborough.

L arry Coutermarsh , of Fairbanks, has completed the SMSUC 15 times! He is an Administrative Assistant, and a proud husband and father. Larry was injured during a motor vehicle accident. Larry placed 3 of 7 in a standard wheelchair in his very first race. J ohn Enrietto , of Fort Wayne, IN has been racing for 2 years. His best race was Dayton, July 2000. John was injured in an automobile accident in 1983. He is an engineer and enjoys the outdoors, and scuba diving. His goals are to maintain in good physical condition, and finish a race with a 20 mph average. K en Higgins , of Lilburn, GA, has been handcycling for 16 months.
