  • Marnie McGuire, a good racemare who had the potential to win a lot more, has been retired. By Camtastic, Marnie McGuire has suffered a tendon injury, and rather than a long wait and hope it recovers, her connections have decided she has more value as a broodmare. She won six of her 24 starts, and she recorded smart times - 1.56.1 for a mile, 2.25 for 1950m and 3.14.6 for 2600m. She was trained throughout her career by Robbie Holmes. The death occured last Sunday of Arnie Gadsby, aged 88, who trained Captain Harcourt to win the Great Northern Derby and Auckland Cup. Gadsby was the uncle of training and driving ace Tony Herlihy, who worked for him between the ages of 16 and 24. The Met Two Syndicate enjoyed watching the defeat of Lennon and Classy Cullen in the 2-year-old race at Addington last week. They had come to support the debut of Likemsiah, a son of Christian Cullen they had bought for $17,000 as a yearling. And they weren’t disappointed. At odds of 23 to 1, Likmesiah followed his more fancied stablemates into the straight, and pounced on them 100 metres out for a surprise win. They are all trained by Mark Purdon.

The MPHRC Board is comprised of two members per province. The current members are:
New Brunswick Hugh Fitzpatrick, Chairman
Dawn Bremner Nova Scotia Robert MacKenzie
Donald Porter P.E.I. Doug Roloson
George Riley Director of Racing John Blakney ATTENTION HORSEMEN: IMPORTANT NOTICE FACTS ON TRANSITION TO STANDARDBRED CANADA The Maritime Provinces Harness Racing Commission (MPHRC) is the governing body for the Atlantic Provinces with the exception of Newfoundland. Standardbred Canada (SC) is your administrative record keeping and licensing body. Should Newfoundland decide to join SC, it will come under the rules and regulations of Standardbred Canada. Standardbred Canada employs Field Representatives to be at racetracks when they are qualifying and/or racing. Our Field Representatives input all race results and transmit them to SC electronically. As well, they are there to transact business for the members, for example, transfers, renewals, etc. We are confident that you will find this an easy way of doing business with SC. The facts listed below will answer many of your questions regarding the transition:
  • MEMBERSHIP.... Your USTA and SC membership numbers are one and the same. SC will honour the "unexpired" membership portion of your USTA membership. However, all future renewals must be filed with SC. Approximately one month prior to your USTA expiry date, SC will mail your renewal pro-rating your fees until your next birthday. Renewals will be calculated from 6 to 17 months, and as they are processed, you will be converted to our birthdate renewal system.

Stable News Past Performers ... Links Hi!
Welcome to my website on harness racing. I've been involved in the sport for over twenty-five years, but unlike most other trainers, I work my horses on the beach.
My stables are situated at Anna Bay, which is forty-five minutes north of Newcastle, where my main racing venue is located.
We are also less than three hours from Harold Park, the number one track in N.S.W I have found that beach training in a straight line places less stress on the horses system. This allows me to maximize each horse's potential with far less risk of injury than for those trained on a conventional track. The horses are also walked in the surf after each workout to cool down.
This has proved invaluable, especially with older raceway horses with leg problems. Please feel free to look around my site and sign my guestbook , and if you have any queries on becoming an owner please see my contact page

Promotes the Standardbred as a successful and versatile horse that can excel in many disciplines outside their traditional role of harness racing.
http://www.ozemail.com.au/~hendybum/
Objectives of the Standardbred Pleasure and Performance Horse Association:
  • to raise the profile of the Standardbred in all equestrian events to promote the Standardbred as a Pleasure and Performance Horse to promote the good nature and temperament of the breed to provide a vehicle for owners of Standardbreds to meet and communicate MISSION STATEMENT The chapter of the Standardbred Pleasure and Performance Horse Association is to promote the Standardbred as a successful and versatile horse that can excel in many disciplines outside their traditional role of harness racing. Through shows and organised displays we will bring to the attention the abilities and temperament of the Standardbred. Through our placement program we will endeavor to locate suitable homes for Standardbred horses retired from or otherwise unsuitable for harness racing. Horses for placement and potential homes will all be subject to inspection/investigation to ensure suitability. Through fundraising, donation and the cooperation of interested parties, we will endeavor to sustain suitable horses until permanent homes can be arranged. We will be an Association with a common interest;- to promote contact between Standardbred owners regardless of the discipline their horse/s are involved in. 3 March, 2003

39. 1999 World Trotting Conf Papers - Hugh Wirth
Paper presented by Dr Hugh Wirth outlining RSPCA Australia's stance on horse welfare issues, including the use of horses for harness racing and other forms of entertainment. Outlines areas of concern and the difficulties of defining welfare .
http://www.harness.org.au/99wldcon/PWIRTH2.HTM
HORSE WELFARE Dr Hugh J Wirth, AM
President, RSPCA Australia Animal Welfare There are many definitions of animal welfare and, to date, no definition has been agreed to internationally. This paper advocates the perhaps old fashioned view that the welfare of horses can always be assured simply by the constant application of high standards of husbandry (in the broadest definition). Similarly, there is no internationally agreed definition of the philosophy of animal welfare. For nearly two hundred years the dominant philosophical view of animal welfare in western society is that humans must treat animals humanely. Where humans make use of animals, or interfere with their habitat, they should bestow a level of care befitting human dignity as a rational, intelligent, compassionate being, and a level of care merited by the nature of the animal as a sentient creature capable of responding to human care and attention. Such care should be marked by sympathy, consideration, compassion and tenderness towards animals. A new philosophy of animal welfare denies the right of humans to use animals in any situation, claiming such a right is pure exploitation. The aim of this philosophy, if realised, is for all living creatures to live in harmony with each other.
