http://www.valleyviewdowns.com/harness_racing.shtml
Harness racing dates back to the first time a couple of competitive souls decided to see whose horse and buggy could cover a selected distance more quickly. Today, there are 29 harness racing facilities in the U.S., along with 90 thoroughbred racing facilities. Currently, there are two harness racing tracks in Pennsylvania - the Downs at Pocono, near Wilkes-Barre, and the Meadows, south of Pittsburgh. Harness racing features Standardbred horses, which are trained to trot or pace at speeds of approximately 30 miles per hour, or faster. The "standard" in Standardbred refers to a 2½-minute mark under which a horse had to trot or pace one mile. The Standardbred arises from a combination of Thoroughbred, Morgan, and Narragansett Pacer blood. Messenger, a grey Thoroughbred imported in 1788 from England, was the Standardbred's foundation sire. Other notable Standardbreds include Hambletonian, a great-grandson of Messenger, who sired more than 1,300 foals that dominated harness racing after the Civil War, and Dan Patch, foaled in 1896, and unbeaten in three racing seasons. That pacer's 1:55 quarter-mile record, set in 1906 as a nine-year-old, lasted for 32 years.

This unique and educational museum offers something you are not likely to find elsewhere: the history of Harness Racing. A popular event these days, harness racing has been hailed as the original Great American Pastime. Follow the trail of Hambletonian , one of the most famous horses in harness racing. This lucky guy made his name not by racing he was raced only once but by siring over 1,300 foals. He was a champion, and Hambletonian blood dominated the breed of trotting and pacing horses and continues to do so today. The Hambletonian Stake, first raced in 1926 at the New York State Fair, has remained one of the sport's premiere events and today is run at the Meadowlands for a purse exceeding one million dollars. Individuals and families will enjoy this museum, as as well as the special events that take place here throughout the year. Visitors to the Museum will also want to visit neighboring Historic Track , the world's oldest track, where horses and their trainers can be seen working out. Special races are held here, and those interested should call for details. School Programs for grades Pre-K through 12 include

Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends the animals. Especially for animals who are suffering, for animals that are overworked, underfed, cruelly treated: for all wistful creatures in captivity that beat their wings against bars. For any that are hunted and lost or deserted or frightened or hungry, for all that must be put to death. We entreat for them all the mercy and pity, and for those who deal with them we ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly words. Make us, ourselves; to be true friends to animals and so share the blessings of the merciful.

http://www.casino-info.com/tips/racebook_tips/history.html
A Horseracing Brief Professional bookmaking for horseracing emerged in England during the 1800's. During this period, bookmaking was conducted by various individuals and regulation as we know it did not exist. Correspondingly, it was subject to much abuses. In response, M. Pierre Oller invented a machine that conducted a new kind of auction pool that was less subjected to cheating by operators, it was privately operated and allowed anyone to bet on any horse. During this time in France, many of the big races were held in Paris and bettors there referred to "auction pools" as "mutuels". As this was the case, when M. Oller's machine arrived in the Americas, it was labeled the Pari-mutuel. Definition of Pari-mutuel is best done by example, a bettor who wants to participate in a race picks the horse they think will win. After the race, all the winners of the race get a share of the money but it is not divided up equally. First, they will receive their return for their initial investment. The rest of the pooled money is then divided among the winners based on units of $2. For example, a person who bets $2 will get back one unit while a person who bets $50 will get back 25 units plus their initial investment. There is also mention to a horse's "odds'. These odds are determined by the percentage of the pool wagered on the particular horse. These odds are then used to determine the payoffs. With the Pari-mutuel system, it makes no difference to the track which horse wins since it's not their money that is paid out but the money of the people holding the losing tickets.

Little Brown Jug Harness Race
A Local Legacy

Have you ever seen a horse race? How about a harness race? A harness race is one in which a horse pulls a light, two-wheeled vehicle called a sulky. Harness racing developed from the old days when horses and buggies raced each other on country roads or city streets. Basically, there are two major types of horse racing riding a horse with a saddle and harness racing. There are two types of horses that compete in harness racing: one is the pacing horse, which moves both legs on one side of its body at the same time, and the other is the trotting horse, whose left front and right rear leg move forward at the same time, then right front and left rear leg move together. Because there are two types of horses, there are two kinds of harness racing: trotting or pacing. If you want to see a horse pacing race go to Delaware, Ohio, for the Little Brown Jug Harness Race, which takes place every year on the third Thursday after Labor Day. The Little Brown Jug is a race for three-year-old pacing horses. The first race was held in 1946. Back then, trotting horses were more popular, but two men in the city liked pacing horses, so they formed the Little Brown Jug Society and organized the race.

Supporters of Internet Gambling Ban Stand Ground Supporters of a ban on Internet gambling held their ground Tuesday against a budding effort in Congress to let states legalize and tax virtual casinos. Members of the Senate Banking Committee joined representatives of college athletics, state attorneys general and the Bush administration in condemning online gambling. The committee heard testimony on a bill by Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., that would prohibit the use of credit cards, checks and electronic fund transfers to pay for online bets. The House Financial Services Committee approved similar legislation last week. Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., said Internet wagering appeals to underage and compulsive gambling, circumvents state laws on gambling and is "a logical medium for laundering money."
