Welcome to The Farrier and Hoofcare Resource Center,
your one-stop source for farriery information and supplies.
We don't want to sound immodest, (well, OK, maybe just a little...), but we do have two claims to fame:
  • This is the largest equine-related site on the World Wide Web Every one of the 65,000+ pages in this site is devoted to one thing: Farriery and Hoofcare.
  • Together with the other sites in the International Equine Resource Center, Anvil Magazine and The Horseman's Advisor, we present you with over 100,000 pages of farrier, hoofcare, and equine health related material.
You probably noticed the ear icon to the left. If you have RealPlayer G2 installed on your computer, you'll be able to play audio clips whenever you see one of those ear icons. RealPlayer G2 plays streaming audio (and video) clips, which means you can hear them play as they are sent to your computer in real time. You don't have to wait for the clip to finish downloading! If you don't have RealPlayer G2, don't worry. Just click right here and you'll be taken to the download page.

    Horseshoes on the Net
In response to popular request, I've put together a brief description of the game of horseshoes for those interested in playing. Apparently, there are no other resources for the game on the Net and keyword searches return stuff on blacksmithing and horses instead. The connection is not casual, however, as it is generally accepted that the game of horeshoes was started by blacksmiths and ferriers (horse-shoers). Modern gaming horseshoes bear only a passing resemblance to "real" horseshoes, since they have grown bigger and heavier to accommodate pitching by hand. The rules set forth here are based on the National Horseshoe Pitchers Associaton of America's official rules, NHPA. Be aware, the many regional variations exist and, unless you're playing in a tournament, it is customary to adopt local rules. The Courts
  • Stakes are placed 40 feet apart.
  • Stakes should extend 14 to 15 inches above the pit surface.
  • Stakes may be inclined toward each other, but not more than a 3 inch lean.
  • Stakes are solid or hollow steel 1 inch in diameter.

    14. A Washers Game Called Wa-shoes: Fun For All Ages!
A variant on horseshoes that originated in Indiana. Very simple and easy to play, and can be played almost anywhere.
    http://www.geocities.com/washoes/index.htm
Tournament Schedule Home Page Basic Wa-shoe Rules How to Score ...
    or a finished set !
What are Wa-shoes? Should I buy it, or make it myself?
Just like a true Jedi-Knight must make his/her own light-saber, a true Wa-shoe Master should make their own game. Why Play? Good clean fun! No athletic skill needed, and play almost anywhere (not recommended on hardwood floors or near fumes that can be ignited by sparks of washers on pavement). Who Came Up With It?
Wa-shoes is a variation of Washer Pitching, which is also based on horseshoes and is a game that has been around for a long time. The problem with Washer Pitching is that it uses holes dug into the ground as targets, which makes it too hard to take on the road with you! Leave it to ingenious back-country Indiana folks to solve that problem! Wa-shoes can be played inside a garage or basement, or outside in the yard or on a deck. Wa-shoes is a game of skill, played by 2 or 4 people. The game uses 6 big metal washers (3 for each team). Three of the washers should be painted or marked different from the other 3 washers. They also, should be the same size and weight. The game is played with 2 boards, each with one circular hole in the center as a target. The boards should be placed on the ground 15 feet apart. Points are scored by whomever throws their washer into the hole, or closest to it (keeping washers on the board).

    Best quote of the war...
Dean's World had a link to an encouraging story: Conscripts shoot their own officers rather than fight IRAQI conscripts shot their own officers in the chest yesterday to avoid a fruitless fight over the oil terminals at al-Faw. British soldiers from 40 Commando’s Charlie Company found a bunker full of the dead officers, with spent shells from an AK47 rifle around them.
Stuck between the US Seals and the Royal Marines, whom they did not want to fight, and a regime that would kill them if they refused, it was the conscripts’ only way out. And the quote?: Small groups of dishevelled Iraqis were standing up all around us with their hands in the air, or with a dirty white T-shirt tied to a stick waving above them. Every time you turned around, a new trickle of silhouettes emerged from the horizon walking slowly towards us. One Marine joked: “Oh no. They’re surrendering at us from all sides!”
