Saturday is group ride day for Redwood Empire Human Powered Vehicles.
  • 200 meter sprints
  • Here are the results of best times of the 200 meter sprints for each racer. The 200 meter sprints were done at Redwood Acres Raceway, an oval measuring 0.331 miles, at the foul line. Listed are the racer, vehicle description, time through the traps, and speed in mph. HPVA's backup timing system was used to record times. Al and I, being guys (in the Dave Barry sense of the term), thought it would be just fine not have sign up sheets, which I realized on the way home means that we did not have everyone's last name. So we are trying to find Whelan's and Eric's last names. Further results will be in when the Delaires get back from travels in a couple of days. Chaney has the 1 hour race scoring sheets. We didn't do the Last One Out Race. No one wanted to be the first one out, especially me. Many thanks to Stephen Delaire who was a motivating force for putting on this event. 200 meter results. Eureka California, August 1st. 1. Whelan ?, Rotator Super 7 fully faired, 11.453, 39.063

REHPV is a loose knit group of people who like to ride and sometimes even make human powered vehicles in Northern California. A human powered vehicle is any vehicle powered by people. Bicycles are hpv's. Many of us ride recumbent bicycles. These are bikes that the rider sits in very comfortable chair with a back. Some of us have made Kinetic Sculptures which are all terrain (including sand, water, and mud) hpv's. For more info contact Mark at 707-442-8133 or email him at markm@humboldt1.com

    8. May 1999. Tomi Engel Riding my MTB on the 25 km trip to university was never much fun and the pain in my bottom, back and neck made me stay at home whenever possible. Wearing padded shorts did not cure the disease and it made me feel like being some kind of racing nerd. Besides that the shorts have never been really comfortable either. I knew about recumbents for a long time before I actually realized what the whole thing is about. It was Oliver Zechlin, showing me his new recumbent made by Challenge and poisoning me with his HPV CDROM picture collection, who gave me the final kick back in 1996 to get hooked on HPVs
The HPV 1996 CDROM Over the following years I have started to build my own customized recumbent bike, which was derived from - at least in my opinion - one of the coolest recumbent designs up to now: The Greenmachine

Human Powered Vehicles CD 1997 first looks
I've just had a chance to look over this CD and I'm impressed. It's the second in hopefully a line of CD publications produced by Oliver Zechlin So how does it feel? Well you can try a portion of it out for yourself on the Web but it is the same as browsing the Internet except faster, a lot faster, especially the bigger picture files. However, you will get the most out of it by going through it whilst connected to the Web as there are many branches off of it to Web pages. This isn't by any means necessary though and you'll be very pleased to be able to go through the many commercial Web pages already on the Net with speed. There's an enormous amount of content, in fact I challenge you to go through it in one sitting as it's nearly impossible. There's not any mention of the System requirements but I could image it would run on almost and machine. Maybe very slow computers like an IBM 386's with little RAM may not be able to view the video files but I would say if your machine can load up a Web browser it should be able to view it successfully. The content was submitted worldwide including some pics of the Adelaide Pedal Prix and of course Greenspeed and is broken down into logical, easy to navigate sections. I would have preferred more than 2 pictures to each page but this may be cumbersome on the more low end computers and there isn't always a button to go back to the main menu but these aren't really a problem. Entire Web sites by companies as well as private HPV'ers are featured, some I don't think exist on the Web now. Most picture first present as thumbnails for speed of viewing, clicking on the picture makes it large, usually full screen.

    Human Powered Vehicles
Personal development extends beyond the 8 hour work-day at WSM . Engineer Chris Clouser invested nearly 1000 hours of his personal time developing and building this exotic HPV. The skills he developed during this project will be invaluable in serving WSM customers. Engineers at WSM are encouraged to pursue personal projects in order to enhance both theoretical and practical skills. Many of the parts on this vehicle were made by Chris in WSM 's in-house prototype facility. Few companies remain where the engineers are able to spend time in the shop. We feel that it essential that our engineers be able to exhibit a practical side to their design abilities in order produce an easier-to-manufacture and more reliable product. This extreme machine is a recumbent, four-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, independent suspension mountain bike. The vehicle weighs about 50 lb depending on accessories. It has anywhere from 6 to 13 inches of travel depending on shocks and mounting configuration. It is a working prototype which exhibits the function of several innovative new concepts. Several aspects of this vehicle are still under development. Equal length A-arms were chosen for their ability to perfectly control camber throughout the entire range of travel at degrees of roll (body roll being minimized by rider technique). Bump steer has been accounted for, and the steering is a near perfect Ackerman. Caster, camber, and toe is fully adjustable as is the seating.

    http://www.ent.ohiou.edu/~urieli/hpv/hpv.html
Some of the (more successful) hpvs that I have built:
I bought my first touring bicycle as a 50th birthday present to myself and discovered that I was above the age that I could contort my body to that ridiculous position, and maintain it on a long tour. I suffered wrist pain, lower back pain, "tokhes" pain (Yiddish for "backside"). I subsequently tried Moulton bicycles, which were then the only touring bikes available with front and rear suspension, but with no relief. There seems to be a fundamental incompatibilty between the seat of a regular upright bike and the human anatomy. I then discovered recumbents, but was put off by the unastheaticly long chain and lack of portability of all the available recumbent designs. It seemed ridiculous to me that one would need a van to transport a recumbent to a point of departure, so I decided to design my own. I went to visit the guru - Don Harse , and threw myself at his feet "Teach me" was all that I could utter, and he did. Within a few months I had built my first recumbent design, posthumously named " Legbreaker 1 " (1993). Spending a sobering 6 months on crutches I decided to discontinue that series and start the Grasshopper series.
