The intermediate drive idler
Recently Dan Sodomsky of eCycle helped me design an intermediate drive idler for the Grasshopper 5R which allows the belt to be on the outside. This makes it much more convenient to take the bike apart for folding - one does not need to touch the chain at all. It is also a much simpler, smaller and lighter device as can be seen in the two views below: The front view of the idler (belt side). An underside view of the idler.

Human-powered vehicles have been designed for virtually every form of transportation, be it on land, on the sea, or in the air. Locomotion powered by human energy is still relied upon daily in many cultures, while industrialized nations have developed human-powered products in primarily the toy, sport, and exercise marketplace.
During the last three decades dramatic innovations have been achieved by entrepreneurs in the field of human power. The English Channel was conquered by a human-powered aircraft in 1979, and in 1988 another such craft traced the 74-mile course of the Greek legend Daedalus by flying from the island of Crete to the island of Santorin. In 1983 th first human-powered hydrofoil watercraft flew. In 1989 a four-man bicycle team raced across America in the astonishing time of 5 days, 1 hour, and in 1992 a streamlined recumbent bicycle reached a speed over 68 mph. These accomplishments are the result of a relatively small but growing community of engineers, athletes, and human-power enthusiasts who have applied advanced technology to an endeavor that is both physically and intellectually challenging. Nowlin states, "The investigation into applications of human power is more that just an engineer's tinkering or enthusiast's hobby. It expresses a way of seeing human beings in relationship to their natural environment. It is innately optimistic, showing that by combining technology, ecological awareness and human ingenuity, we can strengthen our alliance with the Earth."

Michigan Human Powered Vehicle Rally HPRA Race Results Waterford Hills, MI - June 23-24, 2001 In the tables of results, vehicles are grouped and scored by class. Within each class the vehicles are ordered by the composite ranking in the right-most column. The composite score is computed by adding the scores for five events: the hour time trial, hill climb, coast-down, sprints, and road race. The first three of these were conducted on Saturday, and the other two on Sunday. The slow race was run on a narrow 36 ft. long strip, and is not included in the composite score. In each event, first place gets one point, second, two points, etc. Non-participants in a given event are scored in last place and one penalty point is added to their scores for those events. The entrant with the lowest composite score in class is first overall in class. Many people assisted with running the events and carrying out the scoring. The Michigan HPV Association would especially like to thank the following individuals for their efforts: Wally Kiehler, Bill Frey, Jon Stinson, Dave Kennedy, Garrie Hill, Len Brunkalla, Terry Gerweck, Jan Abbey, Jack Hudson, Paul and Anne Pancella, and Steve Robson. Thanks to Bill Frey for compiling race the results.

Barrie Royce (r) with Ben Wukasch '03 (back), Brent Bollman '03 (l) and Robert Wuertz '02 (Photo by Denise Applewhite) "The idea is to get students to think about science and engineering as part of real life"
By Steven Schultz By the time students left the second session of MAE 199 this fall, they were sweating. That wasn't because they had spent the last couple hours steeped in problems of physics, fluid dynamics and materials science. It had more to do with sitting on a stationary bicycle and pedaling madly while talking about physics, fluid dynamics and materials science. That's the way it is in Barrie Royce's Human-Powered Vehicles, a class in which the bicycle is as much a teaching tool as the blackboard. The course explores the machines humans have devised to leverage their own strength and propel themselves faster and farther than their own two feet could carry them. It ranges from dugout canoes to human-powered airplanes but focuses on the bicycle. "The idea is to get students to think about science and engineering as something that's part of real life," says Royce, who is professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering.

THE DESIGN OF ADVANCED HUMAN-POWERED VEHICLES/VELOMOBILES AND PRODUCT-LIABILITY LITIGATION: CAN THEY CO-EXIST IN THE LIGHT OF APPARENTLY OUTRAGEOUS US CASES?
David Gordon Wilson
ABSTRACT.
Much publicity is given to "horror stories" of seemingly excessive judgments against apparently ethical manufacturers after they have been sued by unscrupulous people pretending to be victims of what is claimed to be deficient design. However, these reports are far from representative of the actual situation. It is pointed out in this paper that the other side of this story is that product-liability litigation is decreasing quite markedly in the US; that this form of litigation brings about major improvements in product design and in the safety of the public; and that it is possible to avoid most negative impacts of such litigation by striving for, and documenting. excellence in the design and manufacturing of products, by clearly warning users of dangerous situations, and by putting trust in insurance that is standard for the industry.

How They Are Designed
Frank Didik, technologist-futurist-artist-author, in his greenhouse which serves as his workshop. The "Shooting Star" prototype (a hybrid vehicle) is shown in the foreground.
Thank you for choosing to view the DIDIK ELECTRIC VEHICLE Section of the DIDIK INFORMATION web site. Frank Didik's vehicles bridges the gap between art and technology. Mr Didik designs his vehicles using the best materials for the job. These materials include, though are not limited to steel, aluminum, carbon fiber, fiber glass, plastics and wood. The vehicles are designed with the specific end use in mind. The vehicles must function well, be comfortable to use, reliable, easy to repair and, be safe. The vehicles are also designed to comply with local transportation laws. An attempt is also made to make the vehicles aesthetically pleasing, though function always take precedence over form in Mr. Didik's designs. As a matter of course, design decisions and to a certain degree, compromises are made throughout the development and construction of the vehicles. Compromises include form versus function, strength verses weight, cost versus speed, to name mention just a few. Safety, however, is never compromised. When considering any new project, Mr. Didik, who maintains an extensive personal library of over 2,000 reference books and journals, takes a fresh look at everything that is presently available and incorporates all new recent design and technology elements into the vehicle and, most importantly, developes improved technology, material and manufacturing know-how. The purpose is not to make change for the sake ofchange but rather to create a visionary approach to a particular transportation need.
