Releases
Date: Thursday 4th April 2002
Release: Immediate Another new poll shows no great majority for a hunting ban
A new NOP poll commissioned on behalf of the Countryside Alliance, has revealed little support for a hunting ban. The poll, carried out by NOP between 22nd and 24th March 2002, asked 1000 adults how they wished the Government to proceed following votes on 18th and 19th March. 23% said the Government should now insist on both sides compromising and 25% said it is now time the Government dropped the issue completely. 48% said the Government should now insist on a ban on hunting. The result confirms a trend of declining support for a ban. Following the publication of the Government Inquiry into Hunting with Dogs (Burns Report) in 2000, support for a ban has slipped from a maximum 76% (MORI for IFAW 1997) to a 10 year low, flying in the face of claims made by animal rights organisations that a majority of the public demand the activity to be made a criminal offence. Last year the Advertising Standards Authority upheld a complaint against the RSPCA for an advertisement in which they claimed that "

UPDATE: Additional Wisconsin, Nebraska Deer Test Positive for CWD Five more Wisconsin deer have tested positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD) outside of the state's 411-square-mile eradication zone, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced last week. The newest cases bring the number of deer to test positive for the disease in the state to 55 and also show that CWD now exists in a new Wisconsin countyRichland County. The five deer were killed in what the DNR calls a buffer area around the eradication zone of Dane, Iowa and Sauk counties where the first 50 deer were found. Tom Hauge, director of the DNR's Bureau of Wildlife Management, says the DNR expected CWD to show up in areas adjacent to the eradication zone. He says computer models showed CWD has probably been in the area as long as 5 years, which he says is long enough for deer to spread the disease beyond places it originally appeared.

Hunting Bill (G)
The death-knell was sounded on fox-hunting when the government announced it will make time for a ban on fox-hunting. Margaret Beckett, the "anti-hunt" minister responsible for the bill, is expected to steer the legislation through the Commons where an outright ban is expected to receive the backing of an overwhelming majority of MPs. It is still not certain whether the legislation will be introduced as a government or private member's bill. When a similar bill was debated in parliament during the last session MPs supported an outright ban on hunting by a large majority. Despite claims that senior ministers, including Tony Blair, have now cooled on a total ban anti-hunt campaigners still expect the House of Commons to vote to end fox-hunting. However, the House of Lords is again expected to frustrate the bill and could scupper its chances of becoming law for a second time. Should the Lords reject the Commons' view, ministers have not ruled out invoking the Parliament Act to push the measure through parliament.

From the Director Dear Tennessee Hunters and Trappers,
  • Statewide Small and Big Game Information The Statewide Small and Big Game section presents all the general hunting and trapping regulations that apply across the state. This includes the opening and closing dates and bag limits for each species of wildlife that can be legally hunted in Tennessee. The section also details special hunts, clarifies what Tennessee recognizes as legal trapping equipment, explains tagging requirements, describes how to apply for quota hunts and even how to fill out a kill tag.
  • Wildlife Management Areas There are 95 WMAs across the state and all are managed by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency for wildlife. Varying in size from 53 acres to 625,000, all WMAs are available to the public for hunting and trapping, although certain regulations do apply. These are explained in this section.
  • Public Hunting Areas There are five Public Hunting Areas. These are lands open to the public after a cooperative effort has been reached between the TWRA and the various landholders. Again, certain restrictions and regulations do apply and it is vital that hunters understand and observe these rules so these lands can remain open to future hunters.

Hunting WEB HotLinks Big Game Big Game Harvest Statistics ... Personalize this site LIGHT GOOSE MANAGEMENT ACTION IN COLORADO The Colorado Division of Wildlife, in conjunction with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, established a conservation order to reduce light geese in 1999.
This year’s conservation order period is referred to as the “Eastern Colorado Special Control Period to Reduce Overabundant Light Geese.” Season dates are February 22 through March 31 . Shooting hours are from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. There is no bag or possession limit. Electronic calls are allowed, but unplugged shotguns are not allowed. Participants are required to be registered with the Harvest Information Program (HIP) and to have both state and federal waterfowl stamps.
The extended light goose hunting season in Colorado is part of a North American effort to reduce the number of snow geese that summer on fragile breeding grounds on the Arctic tundra. Colorado is one of 24 states allowing extra hunting to reduce snow goose numbers before the birds head north.
According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the summer habitat around Canada’s Hudson Bay can support about one million geese. Currently, an estimated five million geese spend their summer in the area. The large goose population increases the risk that avian cholera, or another contagious disease, could wipe out most of the geese. Such an event would affect other birds as well.

    What's New?

Updated 3/3/03 THE NORTH AMERICAN HUNTING RETRIEVER ASSOCIATION The North American Hunting Retriever Association (NAHRA) was created in 1983 as a not-for-profit organization to preserve the hunting instincts of our retriever breeds In general our breeds of hunting retrievers need improvement. Many hunters have never seen good retriever work and do not know the potential of their dogs. Hunters need a structure in which they can learn to train and evaluate their dogs off season. They also need a system of formal tests so that their dog's working accomplishments can be demonstrated and recorded. A public record has been created to provide a gene pool of working retrievers for hunters. NAHRA helps clubs organize throughout North America to educate the public in the use of purebred hunting retrievers as conservation animals and to promote the field testing of retrievers in simulated hunting situations. Dogs do not compete against one another for placements, but rather their performances are judged individually against a "hunting standard" defined in the following categories of Field Tests:
A dog earns points by passing a Started, Intermediate, or Senior NAHRA Field Test (80% score is passing).
