Discussion Forum Korea Trip KixCo Martial Art Supplies Hwa Rang Do "The Way of The Flowering Knights" History Hwa Rang Do is an 1800 year old Korean Martial and Healing Arts system. Its theory is based on the Um-Yang principle which states that all things in nature possess equal opposites and the state of balance of these opposing forces creates Harmony in one's life. During the ancient times in the kingdom of Shilla, an elite group of young males were selected from noble families and were taught literature, dance, poetry, horsemanship, philosophy, science, and the art of war. They were known as the "Hwa Rang" the Flowering Knights, and due to their physical and mental strengths, these Hwa Rang warriors lead their kingdom in the unification of the Korean peninsula for the first time. This system has been passed down to modern times, and in 1960 Dr. Joo Bang Lee brought this system back to the public when he began teaching in Seoul, Korea. Since then, Hwa Rang Do has spread throughout the world, while keeping a firm hold on its tradition.

The Australian Hwa Rang Do Academy now has its own web site here Some Notes by Tom Osborn on the Technical Side of Hwa Rang Do The power and control used in Hwa Rang Do depends on specific ways of using the body. Structurally the skeleton can support large loads and transmit great force if properly aligned and conditioned. Extending this strength capability for use in split second evasion, opponent control, smashing kicks and strikes, and maintaining long term health is the major goal of training. Likewise, the mind has a strong role in effective martial arts - not just for perception and awareness, but as the source of intention and the partner of spirit (resolve). In a sense, consciousness discards the petty and distracting elements of "the moment" and unites with the "essence of now". "Heart" maintains the purity and compassion of that unity. The main indicators of progress are smoothness, easy strength, relaxation/confidence, quickness, use of the whole body, and ability to release power suddenly.

A History of Hwa Rang Do - The Way of the Flower Knights Note on the Australian Hwa Rang Do Academy Some Martial Artists promote their arts with claims of very long, concocted history. This page does not follow this tradition - both in the interests of honesty and integrity, and also to encourage other to stop obfuscating in the name of 'the market imperative' or personal vanity - and, of course, some people are just plain, barking mad! This kind of deception does no-one any good! The Hwa Rang Do system as taught by Master Kim Myung Man emerged from a vast and full exposure to a wide range of styles and principles during the 1960s and 1970s. Much of the material was explicitly transmitted to elite groups set up within the Korean military during this time, and as such is fairly heterogenous. Nobody really knows the details of any bare hands arts used by the original Hwa Rang from Silla (southern tip of Korea). There is no connection between the Australian Hwa Rang Do Academy, and the World Hwa Rang Do Association (Joo Bang Lee's organisation). The material indeed is very similar (as explained here), but this does not imply any direct lineages, commonality of principles or business practices. Preliminary Issues and Martial Arts History There are many claims about the origins and lineage of Hwa Rang Do. Hwa Rang Do "The way of flowering manhood" Hwa Rang Do is a fairly complete art encompassing throws, joint locks, strikes, and kicks. Its description would closely parallel Hapkido 's. Hwa Rang Do is an ancient Korean martial art that dates back nearly 2000 years. King Chinhung of Silla established an academy for young nobles to become educated in things such as martial arts, archery, poetry and dance. These young nobles were the first Hwa Rang warriors. Won Kwang Bhopsa established a code of ethics by which the Hwa Rang warriors lived. It stressed among other things loyalty to country and family, courage and justice. For years the art of Hwa Rang Do had to remain hidden in the Buddhist temples. In 1960 Joo Bang Lee recieved permission from his instructor, the Buddhist monk Suahm Dhosa who was the Supreme Grandmaster of the art at the time, to teach Hwa Rang Do to the general public. The first public Hwa Rang Do school was opened in Seoul, South Korea. From there Hwa Rang Do has spread, and now Dr. Joo Bang Lee is the Supreme Grandmaster of Hwa Rang Do and resides in Downey, California, location of the World Hwa Rang Do Association Headquarters. WEIGHT TRAINING AND THE MARTIAL ARTS By Terry Giles A Foreword by Bob Duggan When I reflect on my personal training in martial arts beginning in 1968, I have two major regrets: One is, I wish that I had done more ground fighting and the Second, I wish I would have had a trainer like Terry Giles in weight training. I, like many martial artists, did not believe that weight training built speed or power. I thought that weight lifting was mainly a vanity exercise, and I avoided it (in favor of other vanities). When one looks at modern training regimens in all sports today, this view is clearly erroneous. Here is an opportunity to learn from a real master of the art of body building with a martial purpose. BD WEIGHT TRAINING Try something simple - this will be the test for you. Do 100 deep knee bends (squats) holding a 10 pound dumbbell or plate against your chest. 100 repetitions - no stopping - do you feel the burn - are you sore the next day or even two days later. That is your muscles telling you - you haven't been using me....what are you crazy....stop this...don't do it. All of that soreness illustrates the need for better conditioning and increasing your training to include muscle stimulation or as it more commonly known - weight lifting. A great basic training routine for the beginner (new to weight training) that has access to a gym or weight lifting equipment would be as follows: 3 sets 15-20 reps Squats (feet shoulder width - toes facing straight) 3 sets 15-20 reps Leg Curls 3 sets 12-15 reps Leg Extensions
