Iaido Iaido is a related art to kendo, a traditional martial art of Japan. Kendo, though its origin lays in combat using real swords, today is practiced between two contestants with bamboo sticks (shinai), whereas Iaido (IAI) is practiced solo with either a real (shinken) or imitation (mogitoh or iaito) sword. So what exactly is Iaido? Iai is an art of self defense, utilizing an immediate sword draw to win, against an enemy's sudden attack at the very moment the sword leaves the sheath (saya). It was initiated about four hundred years ago and has been followed by many kendo players ever since. Its training or practice is very hard; because the purpose of Iai is to ultimately master how to win over your enemy without drawing the sword or to spiritually conquer your opponent with your sword left in the sheath; that is, you may settle problems without having to resort to arms. Iai is the counterpart of tachi iai and is also referred to as Iai, Iai-Batto Jyutsu, etc. or Saya No Naka (With the sword left in the scabbard).

Styles History of Iaido Iaido (ee-eye-doe), a derivative of Japanese Kenjutsu (swordsmanship techniques), is the study of drawing the sword, cutting, and returning it to its scabbard, all with a minimum of exertion. The essence of iaido, a non-combative discipline practiced for an individual's spiritual cultivation, is much different than its forerunner, Iaijutsu. Iaijutsu is also a sword-drawing art practiced with combative applications being stressed during training. Iaido is practiced today as an aid to self-discipline, improved coordination, and for the sake of posterity. In most styles of iaido the actual cutting techniques are valid, but the practice of iai for defense or war is no longer necessary in modern times. Training to deal with a surprise attack, with a minimum of exertion while defending oneself, however, can easily be seen to be a worthwile pursuit for the sake of day-to-day dealings with others. With iaido the physical and mental benefits are available to all practitioners, regardless of that person's martial arts background, if any.
