Back in late 1983 I drew this cover for FLAMING CARROT #2 . The story was DEATH GETS DRUNK . There's a very cool Swedish movie from the fifties that you always saw in film class called THE SEVENTH SEAL . There is a classic scene in it, where a medieval knight plays Death a game of chess to keep his soul. I was goofing on this arty film when I had the Carrot wanting to play Death a game of JARTS We did the ash cans of the issue (ash cans are sort of prototype issues, usually xeroxed and sent to distributors or taken to conventions to promote and "road test" the book) and I was real proud of the wacky reference to the famous Bergman film. When people around here didn't laugh at the cover I assumed it was the obscurity of the film but then some asked "What's jarts?" I soon discovered that a lot of people had never heard of this "lawn" game where you have these rings you lay on the ground and toss the large Javelin like darts into the rings, kind of like horse shoes. It was a fad thing up North when I was growing up and sort of a quintessential '60's thing like hoolahoops or pez dispensers, very suburban and very kitschy, but it apparently never made it down South. Anyway, I redrew the cover a second time using a whiffle ball as the gag and everything was fine. I did use the face of Death from the first cover, pasting a xerox of it over the second face because I liked it better.

Yes, we've even had the game ourselves. It's a lot of fun. You play the game by tossing underhanded a large steel lawn dart that has a plastic fins. The dart is tossed back and forth to two large hoops. The object is to get the lawn dart into the circle. You receive points for each dart the makes it into the circle. So why can't you find this game anymore? The game is no longer sold because of the potential danger involved due to the long steel points on the darts. Retailers are no longer allowed to sell it. Many are looking for replacement fins for their old set or even a set for themselves. Your best bet to find this collectors item is at a garage sale, antique store or through some type of chat group, newsgroup or auction. Snatch the Jewels Scatter FlingSocks (jewels) around on the floor in an area about 20 feet across. Choose 1 or 2 Single Swing Fling Two players face each other about 10-15 yards apart. Each player must catch the FlingSock by the tail and throw it back in a single fluid motion. With a little practice you can make lightning fast passes. For competition, see how many times you can pass it back and forth in 30 seconds or a minute. FlingSock Jarts A nice, calm game. Play it just like lawn jarts.
