Rhyme Time
Ever wonder who makes up those jump rope rhymes? No, it's not the lady with the alligator purse, although you might think as much from the amount of times she appears in them. It's just regular people, like you, who sat down one day, and wrote up a rhyme. Now, it's your chance. Learn the traditional rhymes, see rhymes that other kids have sent in (or see your own), and then make one yourself. Let's get started! Traditional Rhymes Kid's Rhymes Make a Rhyme

Ben Raznick
If you think that jumping rope is just for girls, you haven't checked out Ben Raznick's power moves. Who is Ben Raznick? Ben is 15 and a member of the Skip-It jump rope team in his hometown of Boulder, Colorado. He has been jumping competitively for over half his life, and boy, has it paid off! At the 2001 USA Jump Rope Federation National Championships, Ben took home three gold medals and was named the Grand National Champion in pairs single rope freestyle. And at the 2001 Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympics he won both the individual and pairs overall events. Why jump rope? After hearing about Skip-It from a friend, Ben decided to join. He practices three days a week, for two hours, but before a competition, he gears up five days a week, for three hours. It's tough, but according to Ben, "when you've got a good team, you always have a lot of fun." Ben competes not only in speed (which counts the number of jumps in a set period of time) but also in freestyle (which shows off all his rad moves).

Chinese Jump Rope
Ages 6 to 8 Number of participants: At least three kids What players will need: A Chinese jump rope and a place to jump Length of time: Five minutes to an hour Background: A Chinese jump rope is a loop of colored elastic. The game has nothing to do with actual jump rope, but children love it anyway. Rules of the game: To start the game, two players put the Chinese jump rope around their ankles and stand a couple of feet apart. The third player goes first. The object of the game is to complete a series of jumps and tricks without making a mistake. Each time a child finishes a series of moves, the rope moves up. The rope starts around the children's ankles, then moves up to their knees, then up to their waists. A player can't stop between moves. If she lands on the rope when she's not supposed to, or doesn't complete a jump, she's out and it's the next child's turn. The best thing about Chinese Jump Rope is that there are no winners or losers in this game; if a child successfully finishes her moves at the waist level, she must stop and let another kid take a turn. Here are the series of moves each jumper must complete: Move 1: 2-4-6-8 The player must jump from side to side four times with her feet straddling one side of the rope.

By Ray Weigel Printer-friendly format Email this story There are two ways to keep track of a jump rope workout. You can time the workout with a watch, or you can count the number of rotations the rope makes around your body. Using a watch takes less mental effort (just set the alarm and jump until it goes off), but there's no way to measure the intensity of your workout. Counting rotations is more accurate, but it's easy to lose track of your count in the middle of a workout, and counting can get a little tedious after awhile. The HealthyJump skip rope from Tanita solves the problem of keeping track of your jump rope workout. The HealthyJump has a small computer in its handle, which not only monitors the number of rotations the rope makes around your body but also uses this information to calculate how many calories you've burned.

Jump Rope Games
Fun jump rope games for P.E. and recess. There is a game for every grade level and skill level. And they can all be played without a teacher turning the rope. These games make P.E. and recess fun while the children develop incredible endurance, agility, coordination, timing and dodging skills. A great way to start and end P.E. class.
  • Cat and Mouse
Children get into groups of four with one long rope for each group. Two children turn the rope and two play the game. As one is "out" he/she takes the rope of one turner and that turner becomes the challenging player, the "Cat". The jumper who is the winner of each bout is the "Mouse". The Cat advances to Mouse if the Mouse misses jumping the rope, or is tagged by the Cat. The game is played with the Mouse entering the rope and jumping one time and exiting on the diagonal, going around the turner and entering the rope on the other side and again exiting on the diagonal (figure "8" formation). The Cat may enter the rope after the mouse has jumped once and the chase is on. They each go in the figure "8" formation jumping the rope once each time they enter. The Cat is trying to tag the Mouse out.

Jump Rope Trade Off Submitted by John Williams
Grade level: 3rd-up Equipment needed:
Enough jump ropes for everyone in the class.
Laminated skills cards. Setup:
Make up a set of jump rope skills cards using pictures, explanations and tips for each of the skills. These skills and explanations can be found in the Jump Rope for Heart manuals.
My skills cards include:
  • Basic jump Skier Bell Twisting Switches Straddles Crisscross Continuous crisscross Side swings 180's 360's Grapevine Etc.
I like to back them with colored paper and then laminate them.
Make at least 20 different cards.
Place the cards randomly around the room face down. Lesson:
Depending on the number of children in your class you may have them pair up or be individuals. Give out the ropes and have the students go to a card and sit. Stress to the class that they must:
  • READ the card first Then look at the picture Then if they have any questions to raise their hand.

  • On your signal they may start. Walk around the room monitoring, giving demonstrations and/or help when needed.
My signal for start and stop is music. I usually let them go for one song. It is about 2 1/2 or 3 minutes.

    WHAT'S COOL IN JAPAN
    January-March 2001 Competitive Jump Rope
J ump rope is popular the world over as a recreation and, more recently, a sport. Recently, many Japanese elementary school kids have been enjoying it as a competitive sport. Part of the reason for the rise in popularity is that a jump-rope national championship for junior athletes was held in Japan last year.
B andai, the same toy maker that sparked a yo-yo craze among kids with the release of its Hyper Yo-Yo a few years ago, has released a new jump rope known as J Rope. J Rope uses plastic or metal ball bearings to connect the rope and the handles, making it easy to swing. With J Rope, difficult moves like the triple under (in which the rope passes under the jumper's feet three times in one jump) become easier to perform. In 2000, Bandai began sponsoring the Jump Rope All Japan Junior Championship. Regional qualifying tournaments were held at 11 locations throughout Japan between June and August, leading to a national championship held in Tokyo on October 8.
T here are a number of different events in the competitions. In the speed event, jumpers try to perform the greatest number of jumps in 30 seconds. In the power event, jumpers compete over how many double unders (in which the rope passes under the jumper's feet twice in one jump) they can do in a row. In the double dutch event (in which one jumper jumps two ropes twirled by two other people at the same time) the teams try to record as many jumps as possible within two minutes. And in the long rope event, teams of 30 jumpers see how many times they can jump over the same rope together.
