Russian takes kick-boxing world title
A world title fight for the professional kick-boxing 72.5 kg weight category was held on October 4th in Lipetsk near Moscow. Russian Dmitry Likhodumov beat Eugene Valerio from Great Britain with a technical knockout in the fifth world. Valerio had held the title since 1998.
The contest was to consist of 12 two-minute rounds. However, by the second round it was clear that the bout was never going to go the distance. Having found his opponent's weak spot, Likhodumov pounded Valerio with a series of accurate blows that left him defending desperately.
The British champion was obviously not expecting this turn of events and his choice of tactics proved to be unsuccessful. In the fifth round Dmitry achieved a technical knockout with a fierce kick.
Eugene Valerio had fought twenty professional bouts in his career, while Likhodumov had featured in half that number. During the press conference that followed, Valerio pointed to the Russian's considerable skill. According to him, Likhodumov is very strong and highly professional.

Dream Match to kick off the 21st century For college students, spring break is usually associated with wild excitement on a far off island. This year, for the Princeton football team, spring break was exactly that, except not in the traditional sense. On Saturday morning, March 17, Princeton traveled across the Pacific for a game that was billed as the "Dream Match to Kick off the 21st Century." The Tigers played the Kwansei Gakuin University Fighters, who were this year's Japanese collegiate runner-up and who have also played in the championship game 42 of the past 50 years. On Saturday, March 24, the Osaka Dome hosted the battle between two schools rich in football tradition. Football was the primary reason that the trip was made, but it was also an incredible opportunity for a cultural education in the meantime. Fifty-one players made the trip along with the coaching staff, support staff, athletic advisors, professors and academic fellows. The group traveled by bus around the Osaka area to historic sites, such as Himeji Castle and the Todai-ji Temple, and visited nearby cities including Kobé, Nara and Kyoto. The Kwansei Gakuin players were extremely welcoming and were even kind enough to take the players to some of their favorite hangouts. At times the language barrier between the players was difficult, but for the most part the KGU players had fairly decent command of the English language and were very eager to help communicate.

ND Volleyball: Irish to kick off conference play
By: MATT LOZAR
Sports Writer

With no weekday matches scheduled last week, the Notre Dame volleyball team went back to the basics to prepare for the start of Big East conference matches. "I think as much as anything, it gave us four days to practice and to work through some things we needed to work on," Irish coach Debbie Brown said. "We worked on serving and passing, the two basics that have to be strong in order for us to play well." Notre Dame (9-3) begins conference action this weekend by hosting Connecticut (4-7) and St. John's (11-7). Since joining the Big East in 1995, the Irish have won six regular season conference titles, including the last three. The Irish haven't dropped a conference match since losing to West Virginia in November 1998 — a streak of 34 regular season contests. With that impressive resume comes the burden of getting an opponent's best effort in every match. "We just have to realize for the teams in our conference, or non-conference, it is usually the biggest match of the year for them against us," Brown said. "Our opponents are very well prepared and emotionally up for the game. Our biggest challenge in the conference is that we have to get up for every match. We have to match or exceed the level of determination the opponent brings to the game.
