About Japanese Archery
T he bow and arrow began to be used more than 10,000 years ago for hunting and in war. In the Nara (710-794) and Heian (794-1185) periods they were utilized in rituals dedicated to the gods; it was around this time that archery made its appearance in events held at the Imperial court. I n 1543 firearms were introduced to Japan by a shipwrecked Portuguese who landed on Tanegashima, an island off Kyushu that's part of present-day Kagoshima Prefecture. After this, the role of the bow and arrow in battle declined, but as members of the ruling class, warriors continued to train themselves in archerycalled kyudo in Japanese, meaning "the way of the bow"because they considered it important as a mark of their refinement. A n event called toshiya was held during the Edo period (1603-1868) at Sanjusangendo (the main hall of the temple Rengeoin in Kyoto) in which warriors would compete in archery to see who had the greatest physical and mental strength. They would try to shoot arrows through the length of the long, narrow hall2.2 meters (2.4 yards) wide, 5 meters (5.5 yards) high, and 120 meters (131 yards) longwithout hitting the walls, floor, or ceiling. What's more, each contestant would have to spend an entire day and night shooting arrows in sitting position.

Introduction Judo Aikido Karate ... Kendo Kyudo Present-Day Popularity Kyudo Kyudo (Japanese archery) developed during Japan's feudal period as a fighting art. With the founding of the Japan Kyudo Federation in 1949, the discipline made a new start as a sport. In a contest, each competitor usually shoots arrows at a target 28 or 60 meters away. The bow, which is about 2.21 meters long, is made of wood and bamboo glued together. As in other forms of archery, the competitor who hits the target with the greatest number of arrows wins the match. The difference between Western archery and kyudo is that the latter emphasizes the importance of form. In some contests, the competitor's form is taken into account. Archery on horseback, yabusame, Hikime no Gi (An Hikime ceremony)
Ogasawara-ryu (Ogasawara style) Hikime, which is also called "Hikime Kabura" is a wooden carved tool for attachment to the end of an arrow. The frog like shape of the tool has resulted in the name of Hikime. When the arrow is released it makes a sound because the Kabura is hollow. Ancient people believed that the sound drove demons away. This ceremony is held to wish for a birth or to cure an illness, etc.

Kyudo
"The Way of the Bow" Kyudo is a Japanese target archery martial art. It is a highly meditative martial art whose ultimate goals are Shin (Truth), Zen (Goodness) and Bi (Beauty). Styles can be divided into two broad categories, shamen uchiokoshi and shomen uchiokoshi. Shamen archers predraw the bow at an angle to the body and fix their grip on the bow before raising it. Shomen archers raise the bow straight over the head and fix their final grip on the bow in a predraw above the head. It is the oldest of Japan's traditional martial arts. The bow has been used in Japan since prehistoric times. From the fourth to the ninth century, close contacts between China and Japan had a great influence on Japanese archery, especially the Confucian belief that through a person's archery their true characters could be determined. Over hundreds of years archery was influenced by the Shinto and Zen Buddhist religions along with the pressing practical requirements of warriors. Court nobles concentrated on ceremonial archery while the warrior class emphasized kyujutsu, the martial technique of using the bow in actual warfare. With the introduction of firearms the bow as a weapon was neglected and almost died out all together until Honda Toshizane, a kyudo instructor at Tokyo Imperial University, combined elements of the warrior style and the court ceremonial style into a hybrid style which ultimately became known as the Honda Ryu (Honda martial school). With the American occupation banning all martial art instruction, traditional kyujutsu schools declined further and when the ban was lifted, Kyudo, as opposed to kyujutsu, became widely practiced. The Zen Nihon Kyudo Federation (All Japan Kyudo Federation) was established in 1953, publishing the standard kyudo textbook called the Kyohon. There now exists a European Kyudo Federation.

Ele recebeu, no entanto, grandes influências do Shinto (a religião nativa do Japão) e do Zen- budismo. O Shinto se manifesta mais visivelmente na cerimônia, na indumentária e no respeito demonstrado ao arco, flechas e Dojo (local onde é praticado). A influência Zen se dá mais na filosofia e prática do
