Lawn Bowling (or bowls), is perhaps the oldest of all ball games. It was played in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome and spread to Europe by the 10th century. "Some confusion exists between the games of Lawn Bowling which does not use pins and the entirely unrelated game of Ten Pin Bowling, which does use pins. Both, however, rank among the most popular participant sports in the world. Today, more than 100 million people in 80 countries participate in bowling."

Lawn Bowling Finds a Niche at Woodland Park
By Brian Beaky
George Gilmour, a member of the Woodland Park Lawn Bowling Club.
Rand Coburn, foreground, shows his bowling style.
Jul 12, 2000
Rand Coburn is a bowler, defined in a classical sense. Coburn does not frequent any of the thousands of bowling alleys nationwide that have entertained families and provided teenagers smooth first dates for the past 50 years. Rather, Coburn prefers to bowl on a patch of grass just west of the Green Lake Amphitheater in upper Woodland Park, a spot where one will not hear the tremulous symphony of weighted balls rolling down greased wooden alleys, though the occasional splat of a ball sticking in the wet Seattle earth is not entirely uncommon.
Coburn is one of 70 members of the Woodland Park Lawn Bowling Club, which meets weekly to compete in a game that has passed from its Egyptian creators to the great kings of England, to near extinction, and now recently to a progressively younger following seeking a classical challenge in an increasingly diverse sports marketplace.
"The game itself is fascinating," the 32-year-old Coburn said. "It can be as competitive as you want it to be, or as social as you want it to be. As soon as I tried it, I knew I would love it. It was a perfect match for my personality, competitive, yet intellectually challenging. The combination of strategy and skill required is what drew me in."

Recreation Location Profile A Club with History
Founded in 1881, the Ottawa Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club was the city's first ever tennis club and it is the oldest tennis club in Canada. The OTLBC and its members are proud of its history, but there is more then just the club's age to boast about. All 18 tennis courts are made of "har tru" clay, a crushed stone material that lessens the impact on players' joints. Members can book individual courts, or they can take part in the round robins, ladders, and inter-club play that the club offers. The club has a professional teaching staff that gives private lessons to those who want to improve their game, and there are daily clinics that offer instruction in a variety of areas and skill levels. The OTLBC also has great programs for young players, including tournaments, after-school clinics, and tennis fun camp for when school lets out. The OTLBC is one of the best places in Ottawa to play tennis, but its perfectly manicured lawn bowling greens are considered to be some of the best in Canada. Many people think lawn bowling is sport for senior citizens, but here it is popular with people of every age. Members can take part in mens', ladies' and mixed games, and they can receive free coaching by the club's certified instructors. When it starts to get too hot on the green or on the court, players can jump in the club's swimming pool to cool down. Members can participate in aquafit classes or swimming lessons, or just splash about during free swim times.

Lawn Bowling Balls
Flea Market Finds With The Kovels : Episode FMF-201

Hosts Ralph and Terry Kovel travel to London to visit the famous Portobello Road Flea Market in London, England. There dealer Dave Barker shows antique lawn bowling balls that are beautifully crafted of wood, plus some inlaid with ivory, brass and silver.
Just when you think you've seen everything, along comes a new item for home decorlawn bowling balls. Antique balls are made of exotic wood, while newer ones are made from plastic.
Popular to use as book ends, doorstops and paperweights, the ball is not entirely round. These sell for $38 to $45 each. This lawn bowling ball trophy is dated 1888. Trophies such as these were once presented to lawn-bowling prize winners. The silver-centered balls are more rare and are priced at $315.

Green On This Side Lawn bowlers practice daily to prepare for tournaments, get exercise and have fun By Amy Jenkins When thinking about outdoor sports, golf, tennis and football are usually a few that come to mind, but some Sunnyvale residents are meeting in Murphy Park to take advantage of the greens that are specifically designed for the game of lawn bowling. Whereas there are approximately 5,000 men and women involved in the United States, there are thousands of bowling green clubs and hundreds of thousands of players in England, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Overton speculates that the reason there are so few players in California, compared to the thousands from his hometown in England, is that there are so many other things to do here, such as skiing and surfing. After traveling internationally for tournaments, he says that the fastest greens are in New Zealand and Australia. He says that next year he plans to play in Hawaii, New Zealand and Fiji. There are 58 active members of the Sunnyvale Lawn Bowls Club, who enjoy the sport, exercise and socialization. Right now they meet Monday through Thursday from 12:30 to 3 p.m. to practice for the tournaments that will begin opening day in Oakland on March 23. In May there are many tournaments in which the Northern California clubs compete against each other. The other clubs are in Oakland, San Francisco, Palo Alto, San Jose and Santa Cruz, says Stu Shoemaker, 86, public relations officer and member of the Sunnyvale club.

Lawn Bowling The Sport
Lawn bowling or "bowls," as the game is known throughout the British Commonwealth is played on 120 ft. x 15 ft. rinks within a 120 ft. square green. The object is to roll the bowl so that it comes to rest close to a small white ball (the jack) at the far end of the rink. The three-pound bowl, made of a plastic composite, does not roll in a straight line. Due to its shape (it is biased, not round), the bowl rolls in a curve. A player wins points by placing more bowls closer to the jack than his or her opponent. Games are played by individuals or two-, three-, or four-person teams. The United States has more than 150 community-sponsored bowling greens. There are 5 million bowlers worldwide, mostly in England, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, and Hong Kong.
