Salzman River Driving (Rafting) River driving originated as a way for the lumberjacks to transports the logs from the woods to the sawmills. The lumberjacks could be cutting timber hundreds of miles into the woods, so it was too far for them to build roads, or for them to be transported by the railroads. So during the winter cutting season, the logs would be cut and skidded to the banks of the frozen rivers by horse and oxen where they would be stacked until spring. When the spring thaw cam, the river drivers, equipped with nothing but caulked (spiked) boots and a piked (metal pick on the end) pole, would roll the logs into the rivers and would drive the mass of logs down the rivers by balancing on top of them. River driving was the most dangerous work in the camp. They could fall into the icy cold water and be crushed between the moving mass of logs, or they could even fall into the icy cold water and get hypothermia. Log Jams LARGEST LOG JAM IN THE WORLD - It took 150 lumberjacks, 5 teams of horses, and one steam engine 6 months to break up this log jam on the mississippi River in 1894. Located near Little Falls, MN, the log jam was almost seven miles long, a half-mile wide and 60 feet thick in most places. It was estimated to contain over four billion feet of lumber. The best known folk hero of the Northwoods is the giant lumberjack, Paul Bunyan. A product of rugged humor, wit and spontaneous exaggeration, his 'legend' was created in the bunkhouses of ordinary logging camps, by ordinary working men, while they gathered around the glowing woodstoves on cold winter evenings. It was from there that stories about Paul and Babe spread throughout the pine shanties of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The lumberjacks heard and then retold the fables, often weaving in local or personal embellishments as they passed the tales on. Here are a few examples of the many tales they once told... Paul Bunyan is Born It took five giant storks, working overtime, to deliver him to his parents. Three hours after his birth he was reported to weigh a full eighty pounds and they used a lumber wagon drawn by a team of oxen as a baby carriage. His baby voice was described as 'sort of a cross between a buzz saw and a bass drum'. He cut his teeth on a peavy pole and grew so fast that after one week he had to wear his father's clothes. He would eat forty bowls of porridge just to whet his appetite. His lungs were so strong that he could empty a whole pond of frogs with one "holler". Paul and Babe The Blue Ox Paul rescued Babe, as a calf, from drowning during the Winter of Blue Snow. Babe grew to be twenty-four axe handles and a plug of tobacco wide between the eyes and as a snack would eat thirty bales of hay...wire and all. Babe was so strong that he could pull anything that had two ends, except Paul (Paul could never be pulled, and he could only be pushed so far). It is said that it took a crow a full day to fly from the tip of one horn to the other. Paul once used Babe to straighten out thirty miles of crooked town road. When all the twists and curves were pulled straight there were an extra twelve miles of road left over. Paul rolled it all up and gave it back to the town to use elsewhere.

A round the world there are few images of this country more vivid than the picture of the woodsman in red mackinaw, trousers cut off at his shins, boots and "bonnet rouge", a shaggy lonely figure swinging a double bitted axe amid the snow and evergreens of the great north woods. A "River Hog" was a river driver who would jump in icy rivers to unclog log jams. When all else failed a "Powder Monkey" would be called in to blast it free. B efore prohibition, the lumberjack might work six months in the bush and he would be broke three or four days after he got to town. This event was called "Blowin Er In!" A fter a long days work the lumberjacks would eat hearty while easing their hardships with tall tales. T he Lumberjack Restaurant has been owned and operated by the NOGUEIRA family since 1980. T he restaurant has carved out a niche for itself in Windsor by preparing uniquely Canadian dishes that will leave any customer satisfied. C ome and treat yourself to a bit of Canadian history.
