The team annually plays in the Mid-Florida Conference and for the last two years, the team has qualified for the Florida Community College Activities Association State Tournament Region VIII State Tournament. In 2001, the Raiders finished the season ranked number two in the Final FCCAA Top 10 Poll. The team's academic record is just as impressive as its athletic history. In 1998, the team ranked seventh in the nation academically, with an overall 3.04 GPA. Where were all those easy-to-hit, sky-high meatball pitches? Where were the 20-15 final scores? None of these softball stereotypes were anywhere to be found yesterday at Cushman Park, where some of New England's best modified-pitch teams showed just how well their sport can be played. The Fairhaven field was home to a 10-team tournament over the weekend, and with the top two finishers earning a berth in the American Softball Association's Modified Nationals, the stakes were high. So was the level of competition five of last year's top 10 national finishers were in the field. "I think all we had to do was mention Fairhaven, and people were excited about coming here," tournament director Joe Duarte said. "They like the area, the restaurants, the accomodations they get treated right here. They remember Fairhaven." Fairhaven's Livesey Memorial Day tournament was a staple on the regional circuit for years, but when it ceased operations over a decade ago this area was left out of the loop.

Tournaments The main focus this year has been on developing girls' softball - and this will probably remain the focus for some time to come, as building the women's game in the UK is a cornerstone of our overall development plan. Opportunities for girls in sport (especially school sport) remain very limited and our game is therefore very attractive to schools. A US coach (Bill La Chapelle) came over the season. Bill has spent a lot of time in London schools working with both single sex and mixed classes. He has run approximately 30-40 school sessions during his stay. Several schools have been extremely responsive to softball, and will definitely be getting involved in a more serious way next year. It's likely that there will be a cluster of schools centered on Debden High School in North East London, and another (probably making use of Finsbury Park) centered on Alexandra Park School in North London. Sadly, with the very limited resources we have available (and a continuing shortage of coaches), it was not possible to be entirely pro-active and the emphasis is still on teachers who are keen enough to get their schools involved. Wandsworth continues to be the only borough with an authority-wide in-school programme (largely thanks to the efforts of Mark Kostura).
