    THE SCOOP
Takraw has been played in Thailand and Malaysia for over 500 years. The oldest form of kicking the woven "Buka" balls was for players to stand in a circle and try to keep the ball in the air as long as possible without using their hands or arms. The game was a lot of fun and helped increase the foot skills and agility of the players.
About 50 years ago, some players decided to add a net and a set of rules to make the game more competitive. This move would make takraw truely one of the most amazing foot sports in the world. With rules similar to volleybali, players may contact the Buka bali up to 3 times on each side of the net (you do not have to alternate hits) using everything but their hands or arms - usually their head and feet. The net height and dimensions of the court are the same as badminton - net height of 5 feet and a court 44 feet long and 20 feet wide. The most dramatic action in the sport happens at the net. Players often kill the ball by thrusting their bodies into inverted positions and spike the ball into the opponents court at speeds of over 80 mph. Often called "Foot Volleyball" in English, this sport was made a medal event in the 1990 Asian Games. Every year Thailand also hosts the Takraw World Championships held in April. In 1996, more than 20 countries from around the world, including the United States, sent teams to compete in the World Takraw Championships.

    A game Thailand excels in
This is an example of the high-flying takraw action you'll see in official competition or at any public park in Thailand. I n my campaign to drop six kilogrammes of unnecessary weight I am regularly attending the exercise room at the Bangkok Post. Yesterday I ran into a game being played there that may be unfamiliar to many living outside of Southeast Asia. The game is called "sepak takraw." "Sepak" is a Malaysian word meaning kick and "takraw" is a Thai word meaning woven ball. The ball used in the sport is a little smaller than the standard soccer ball and is traditionally made of woven rattan. The object of the game is to keep the ball from hitting the ground without using one's hands. One of the nicest things I like about the game is the sound when the ball hits a body or the ground. It sounds like "tisk." The sport is an ancient one which started in the Malaysian city of Malacca in the fifteenth century. It wasn't until the twentieth century, however, that takraw began to evolve into what it is today.

Staff Writer ZEELAND Take a ball the size of a grapefruit and put it on a badminton court. Brush up on your Hacky Sack technique. Borrow the rule book from soccer and volleyball. Mix. Play vigorously, and you've got takraw. The game that could become the next Olympic sport it will be an exhibition at the 2000 Summer Olympics was showcased Tuesday at a series of exhibitions by two U.S. Olympic team hopefuls for students at Cityside and Creekside middle schools. Takraw is played by teams of three aside who kick a ball about four times the size of a tennis ball on a surface similar to badminton court 20-feet wide, 40-feet long with a 5-foot high net. (Based on VRML)
Introduction It is generally believed that sepak takraw was played as early as the 9th Century. Traditionally a game of the Malays in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei, sepak takraw is also played in other Southeast Asian countries Philippines, Thailand, Burma and Laos. It is known by different names sepak raga, sipa, takraw, ching loong or kator. An enduring pastime, it combines the teamwork of volleyball, the dexterity of football and the fine finish of badminton. The net for the game was introduced in the 1920s. In 1957, players and officials gathered at Istana Kampong Glam to standardise sepak takraw rules. Since then, it has become an international sport as countries in Southeast Asia adopted these rules. Sepak raga continued to be played as a recreational game without the competitive element. Sepak takraw was introduced in the 3rd SEAP (Southeast Asia Peninsula) Games in 1965, and has since then, been a regular feature in the Games. As a result, ASTAF (Asian Sepak Takraw Federation) revised and standardised the rules for competitions. These rules and regulations have undergone several revisions over the years.
