WOMEN ATHLETES AND STRENGTH PERFORMANCE
An elite female athlete has explosive strength, exceptional acceleration, and speed. There are not gender-oriented athletic-type strength training programs. What works for the male athlete works equally for the female athlete. Women have the same biological ability to develop strength and power as men when subjected to high quality training. However, in comparing the strength potential of both sexes using lean-body-mass-to-fat-ratios, their strength potential would be the same as men.
Biochemical individuality. The degree to which a women athlete can develop muscle mass and strength is dependent upon a number of factors. These include: heredity, body type, diet, level of adrenal androgen (testosterone) secretion, and type and intensity of the strength training program.
Strength potential. Although muscle fiber composition is similar in males and females, the average man is 30-40 percent stronger than the average female. This difference in strength however, is not consistent for all muscle groups. In upper body strength women average 55 percent of the strength values of men, trunk strength 65 percent, and leg strength 72 percent. In comparing the squat strength of women powerlifters to males, you find in the 52 and 56 kilo classes they are 90-95 percent as strong, which is highly significant. However, as you move up to the heavier classes males have too much muscle for women to compete against.

With ACC adjunct instructor Kechko by her side, Deborah has a good shot.

This is a short extract of a very detailed article on the topic Olympic Weightlifting: Part
By
Micheal Clark
and
Rodney Corn National Academy of Sports Medicine Recently, a fitness professional posed a couple of fairly common questions that deserve a thorough answer. They asked:
  • "Do you think Olympic weight lifting should only be done by serious amateur and professional athletes?” “Are there safe alternatives to Olympic lifting that are as effective? "
  • The simple answers to the questions are, no and yes, respectively. However, these answers are only opinion and regardless of someone’s experience or professed level of knowledge, there is no real way to quantify these answers or opposing answers, for that matter. What can be done, though, is to present some information relevant to Olympic lifting and the human body and let you draw your own conclusion. To quickly clarify what is meant by the term Olympic weightlifting, this article will refer to the lifts known as the “Snatch” and the “Clean and Jerk” that are usually performed at a high-intended velocity of contraction (as fast as possible). Other derivations of these lifts such as the hang snatch and hang clean and/or the push jerk or push press may also be included. The remainder of this article will be divided into three parts dedicated to expanding on the answers given. We will start here in Part I with a brief history of Olympic weightlifting and then begin to address the first question, “
