Sunday night, Juan Antonio Samaranch, International Olympic Committee president, called the Atlanta Olympics "most exceptional," invoked the memory of the 11 Israeli athletes killed in the Munich Olympics in 1972 and asked for a moment of silence for those injured and the one person killed in the bombing of the Centennial Olympic Plaza last Saturday. Then, the more than 80,000 in Olympic Stadium celebrated 16 days of athletic competition. The closing ceremonies ended in music, lights and a conga line of athletes snaking around the stadium floor. 55. Women In The Olympics
Feminist Majority's Women in the olympics section commemorating 96years of womens participation in the Olympic games. This section
    http://www.feminist.org/fmf/graphics/intro.html
Nineteen-ninety-six marked the 100th anniversary of the modern Olympics and the 96th anniversary of women in the Olympics. Women were not allowed to participate in the first Olympic games and, in 1900, women competed in just three sports: tennis, golf, and yachting. At the 1996 Summer Olympics, July 19 to August 4 in Atlanta, Georgia, more women participated than ever before (36 percent of the athletes were women in 1996, compared to just 30 percent in 1992), and new sports and events for women were added, including soccer and softball. On the down side, there were still many more men athletes (6500 men compared to 3700 women) and more male sports and events. For an overview of women in the 1996 Olympic games, see our Look Back at Atlanta . For more background information, our overview of women in sports and the Olympics provides facts about women in the Olympics and a summary of women in sports . It also features an interview with feminist Olympics expert Carole Oglesby. Women athletes and women’s teams are often overlooked by the media. Even more overlooked are women coaches many women world-class athletes and college athletes are coached by men. Check out profiles of Olympic women athletes, teams and coaches. Again in 1996, a number of countries, most of which are fundamentalist Muslim, brought no women athletes at all to the Olympics. To protest the lack of women athletes from these countries and ask the International Olympic Committee to intervene, two European women started an organization called Atlanta Plus. What is Special Olympics?
I have been doing some surfing lately and I have noticed a few errors people make about Special Olympics.
  • Most people misunderstand who is eligible for Special Olympics. In order to be a Special Olympics athlete, you must be mentally handicapped.
    • Having only an emotional handicap (BD, ED, et al) does not make you eligible.
    • Having only a learning disability does not make you eligible. Albert Einstein, even though he was dyslexic, could not have competed.
    • Having only a physical disability does not make you eligible. You will not see Jean Driscoll compete in a traditional Special Olympics competition.
