What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is a sport in which orienteers use an accurate, detailed map and a compass to find points in the landscape. It can be enjoyed as a walk in the woods or as a competitive sport. A standard orienteering course consists of a start , a series of control sites that are marked by circles, connected by lines and numbered in the order they are to be visited, and a finish . The control site circles are centered around the feature that is to be found; this feature is also defined by control descriptions (sometimes called clues ). On the ground, a control flag marks the location that the orienteer must visit. To verify a visit, the orienteer uses a punch hanging next to the flag to mark his or her control card . Different punches make different patterns of holes in the paper. The route between "controls" (refers to the flag or the site) is not specified, and is entirely up to the orienteer; this element of route choice and the ability to navigate through the forest are the essence of orienteering. Most orienteering events use staggered starts to ensure that each orienteer has a chance to do his or her own navigating, but there are several other popular formats, including relays and events in which the orienteer must find as many controls as possible within a specified time.

Orienteering Clue Symbols
Although clues are always written out in English (or the local language) for beginners' courses, clues for intermediate and advanced courses are given as symbols in a table format. To the uninitiated, this can look like hieroglyphics, but the system is quite simple to master and is more compace and specific than a written description - and has the advantage of being easily understood the world over. The example shown here begins with a course designation (in North America, Orange refers to the intermediate level course). The second entry in the heading is the length of the course (in kilometers or meters), which is always measured as the minimum distance an orienteer would have to travel to complete the course (in other words, along the straight line except where an obstacle such as a lake or out-of-bounds area forces a deviation from the line. The third entry in the heading is the climb , in meters, as measured along the "ideal" route (as determined and measured by the course setter). Each succeeding line in the clue list describes the location of a control, and the final line describes the approach to the finish from the final control.

Orienteering Definition
In orienteering you use a map and compass to find your way across unfamiliar terrain. In a typical event, the organizer places orange and white control markers at various land features found on your map. These markers act as checkpoints along the course. The object of the sport is to use the map and compass to locate the control markers and return to the finish. Using your imagination and navigational skills, you try to select the best route to each control. Once there, you punch a score card which verifies that you found the control. There are many versions of orienteering (on foot, bicycle, or skis; at night; in relays, and so forth), but the idea is essentially the same: the use of a map and compass to find your way across unfamiliar terrain.
(Text courtesy of NEOC Times Furthermore, most orienteering events are in some way, shape or form a competition (for those inclined). A measure of success is commonly given by time taken to complete a given course or by the number of control flags found during a specific time allotment. A ranking of competitors (including a winner) usually follows. Competition can range from trying to do better than fellows from your club, to elite level where competitors are running and navigating faster than most people can run on a flat road. It's all up to you as to what you want from the sport. The figure at the top of the page is one side of the three-sided orienteering flag.

What is Orienteering?
Orienteering means maps, forests and adventure. It doesn't matter how young or old or fit you are. You can run, jog or walk. You go at your own pace, and choose your own routes between the red and white markers. If you like excitement, fresh air, and exploring the countryside -orienteering could be the sport for you! What is Orienteering? Orienteering is a sport where competitorsnavigate their way between control points marked on a specially drawn map . There are various orienteering disciplines ,of which Foot-O is the most common. For these events, courses vary in lengthfrom about 2km for beginners and children to over 12km for experienced adult orienteers. At any orienteering event there will be a range of courses suitablefor newcomers and for experts. Most people start at a colour coded (C4) event. A comprehensive fixtures list is available online. Why Orienteer? Orienteering takes place in a variety of outdoorplaces, from town parks to countryside, forest and moorlands. Youget out into lovely countryside, often to places you wouldn't otherwise visit. It is an easy, painless way of staying fit or getting into shape: your physical exertion goes almost unnoticed as you read yourmap and follow your route, and for the good athlete and map-reader there isthe unique challenge of finding you way over complex and rough terrain whilerunning at speed. It is a sport for all ages and all abilities, from children under the age of 10 to veterans of more than 70. You can orienteer with your friends and your family, and share your experiences afterwards.

ORIENTEERING - THE FAMILY SPORT FOR LIFE What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is finding one's way through the country side, typically bushland, using a detailed map and compass. An orienteering course involves visiting a number of locations in the bush (such as creek junctions, gullies, boulders, etc.) in the correct order.
These locations, called controls, are marked by orange and white flags. To complete an orienteering course may take as little as 20 minutes for a short easy course, or up to 3 hours for a longer difficult course. Orienteering can be enjoyed by both young and old, either as a relaxing recreation or as a competitive sport.
