The Rehabilitation Institute Outrigger Canoeing Course The Rehabilitation Institute of Northeast Georgia Medical Center recently offered an outrigger canoeing course for individuals with physical disabilities. The course was held at the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue at Clarks Bridge Park. Recreational therapists, physical therapists and occupational therapists from around the state learned how to use outrigger canoeing as a therapy tool for patients with physical disabilities. The course was held in conjunction with the United States Canoe Association's National Championships so that outrigger canoe athletes were able to give the therapists hands-on training in seating and instructing participants. Newport Outrigger club about Hawaiian Newport Beach
The Newport Outrigger Club, established in 1958, was the first Hawaiian outrigger club on the West Coast. Founded by Noah Kalama, the organization today is led by his son, Thomas Kalama. Still based in Newport Beach, CA, the club continues to promote long-held native Hawaiian traditions through the teaching of outrigger paddling and cultural arts such as native dance and handcrafts. Newport Outrigger is a Non-Profit organization with 501c4 status. To view our NOC documentation click here. General Objectives Promote Good Citizenship and Fellowship Preservation and Promotion of Hawai'iana ... Instructional and Educational Programs General Objectives Promote Good Citizenship and Fellowship Newport Outrigger Club was founded on the premise of outstanding character and the tenets of truth, fairness, tolerance, and respect for our elders, fellow associates, and the environment. All activities present opportunities to build respect for one another and trust in our personal lives and, in turn, the lives of those in our communities. There is a certain level of trust and cooperation for one another - be it preparing for a race event, assisting another canoe club or organization, contributing time, money and manpower to other cultural, environmental or charitable organizations, or simply assisting one of the corporate associates in a personal endeavor. Newport Outrigger is firmly grounded in helping one another to achieve personal goals. While not immediate in its outward impact, the benefits to the community and mankind of good fellowship, citizenship and cooperation are immeasurable.

http://www.bethroberts.com/canoe.html
So you have to understand where outrigger canoeing falls in my life. Here is my history... I used to go bodyboarding at the Army rec center just north of Pokai bay, on the leeward side. I loved it there, that's where we went most often. We would snorkel, ride the waves, and whatnot. Jarod was away on some field training or other, and I had one of my few brave spells and went by myself to go bodyboarding. This was rare - I had great trouble leaving the house alone. My depression caused me to stay at home most of the time, and even getting out of bed was an achievement. I was bodyboarding there in the evening, and I saw a man with an outrigger canoe. I think it was a four-seater. It was red. He was by himself, riding the waves into the shore, then paddling back out. He passed near me, and I said "That's a beautiful canoe". He asked me, "Would you like a ride?" I was a little nervous, but I said "Sure", and went to put my bodyboard on the beach. I got in the canoe, and he handed me a paddle and explained how it worked. We chatted a bit, and he told me he was a coach for the little kids crew of his paddling club. He seemed very nice, and I was much more at ease.

Season Three
: Episode Two Outrigger Canoeing in Hawaii
Pacific Ocean Sleigh Ride
Host: Arlene Burns and Annie Getchell Guest: Audrey Sutherland Hawaii looms large in most everyone's vacation dreams - black sand beaches and coconut palms, luaus and tropical fruit drinks, colorful culture and crystalline waters all beckon. Anyplace Wild traveled to Hawaii's Big Island, as the main island of Hawaii is known, to take two water-based but quite different adventures. Cohost Arlene Burns got her fair share of drenching when she went on a daunting adventure in an outrigger canoe, while Cohost Annie Getchell saw the ocean from a different perspective while doing her best to keep up with her traveling partner, "70-something" Audrey Sutherland, who explores the depths in a unique way: swimming. All this loomed large against the Big Island's stunning scenery. About our guest: Raised in California, Audrey moved to Hawaii in 1952, and has lived there ever since. When her husband decided to return to the mainland, Audrey stayed on in her adopted home. She found a job as an educational counselor and raised her four children there. One day, on a flight from one island to the next, Audrey became intrigued by the folded-up coastline of the island of Molokai. She wanted to explore it all, but the cliffs were accessible only by boat (which she didn't have) or chopper (which she couldn't afford). So, in 1962, she decided to tour the coast by swimming along it, towing an inflatable raft with supplies. She has since refined her mode of travel, and now uses an inflatable kayak because it is transportable, light enough for her to handle comfortably, and relatively inexpensive.
