Whitaker "There is an important characteristic of all Finns that is best described by the word sisu ," observes Beatrice Ojakangas in The Finnish Cook Book which Jan Whitaker keeps on hand in her kitchen. "Finnish-to-English dictionaries define it as 'enduring energy' or 'to possess guts,' but it is more than that. It is a never say-die individualism that Finns seem to be born with; they have the physical energy and mental endurance to stick Sisu to a job until it is done, and done well. Although sisu might make the Finn appear tough and hard-shelled, he/she is really extremely sensitive. Finns have a feeling and concern for their fellow man, whoever he may be." The author could just as well have been writing about Jan Whitaker, the owner of two DUKE outriggers and whose mother was from Finland. A world and national champion many times over in both sprint and marasthon canoeing, Jan exudes sisu . She also gives as much back to tshe sport as she has received. A cum laude graduate of SUNY Cortland, Jan has coached youths for more than 30 years in a variety of sports as well as cheer leading.

Sports Commissioner Podziba Announces
6th Annual Liberty World Challenge
Outrigger Canoe Competition on June 29th, 2002
New York City Sports Commissioner Kenneth J. Podziba announced today that New York City will be the site of the 6th Annual Liberty World Challenge on Saturday, June 29, 2002. The daylong event will include 100 outrigger canoe teams participating from all over the globe. The Liberty World Challenge is poised to become one of the largest competitive sporting events on the water and the event represents the revitalization of a once thriving culture of athletic events in the New York City Harbor.
“The concept of setting this ancient tribal sport against the background of New York City’s modern skyline has made the Liberty World Challenge a premier international paddlesports event and attraction, drawing the world’s best watermen,” said Sports Commissioner Podziba. “We are delighted to welcome the participants and spectators from around the world to New York City; the competition promises to be an exciting and entertaining afternoon for all New Yorkers to enjoy.”
Six person teams, with athletic skills ranging from Olympian to novice, will race 16 miles passing national monuments in the New York City Harbor including the Statue of Liberty. The route will begin at Pier 84 and competitors will head down the Hudson and continue up the East River, past the South Street Seaport, turning clockwise at the Brooklyn Bridge. The competition will eventually lead the participants behind Ellis Island and up the New Jersey shore. The winner will be declared when competitors cross the pier-head between the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum and Pier 84.

The History of Outrigger Canoe Paddling in California
by Michael (Jake) Jacobs
California Outrigger Canoe dates back to 1959. The first race held in California was on September 20, 1959. This first race was a long distance race from Avalon on Catalina Island to the Newport Dunes inside the California Coast.
This race involved two boats shipped to California from Hawaii through the efforts of Albert Edward "Toots" Minvielle. Both of them were koa wood boats with the names of "Malia" and "Niuhe" . "Niuhe" means "shark".
The "Malia" team was composed of Hawaiian All Star outrigger paddlers organized by Toots. Some of the members of that first Hawaiian team to paddle the Catalina Channel in 1959 were Chris Bodie, Blu Makua, Archie Kuana, Joe Gilman, Sonny Heniques, and Dougie Carr.
The California team paddled the Niuhe. This first mainland team included George Kopa, Tom Johnson, Dan Uadis, Frank Saddler, Mike Johnson, Dave Arne, Doug Wood, Ron Druman, Lorrin Harrison and others.
The Hawaiian team in the Malia won the race in a time of 5 hours. The newly formed California team in the Niuhe finished close behind in a time of 5 hours and 11 minutes.
Lorrin Harrison, the steersman, and an original member of the first California team had the following remembrances of the early beginnings and that first race, "When I first heard about canoe racing here, I had a dug-out canoe that I built in 1950. We were surfing it down in Doheny. Noah Kalama came by, he knew my sister from Hawaii, and I knew him from body surfing. He said, 'Lorrin can you get a team together of guys down here you think would like to paddle? We'll have a race with an Hawaiian team.' I said 'Yeah, we can do that!' So we started coming here to the Dunes, paddling here till 9 o'clock every night. There was about 15 guys all paddling here. Other guys would build a fire and we'd stay here and paddle when the wind was howling. we worked for two months, we were so sick of paddling here. I thought we would never get out and see the ocean. Finally Noah let us go out and it was rough outside too. That's the way it started, right here in these Newport Dunes.

Building Paddles

Ask about the new wood/composite designs (ok, hybrid!!......) I am building. Combos of balsa/cedar/2 ounce glass and graphite hybrids in the true sense of the word. Most of the so called hybrid paddles are really just heavily layered carbon fibre over 5 ounce, which soaks up excessive resin, making the blade much heavier than the advertised l6 ounces believe me. You can ask just by clicking here: Brad@gillespiepaddles.com
Who I am I am Brad!! I started doing this paddle deal way back in the mid 70s.....sort of before angled paddle were really a big deal. Initially, building paddles was just a period of playful experimentation during college. We needed angled paddles to race our marathon canoe machines with, and they were scarcely available. So that's it. I just decided to start making my own. And yes, they were rough!! If you are new to this page, please just read on down. I kind of throw things in as they hit me, and its not totally, or even untotally, organized.

provided by Matt Butcher. A Brief History N CAWPA first came together as a dragon boat team and spearheaded the development of dragon boating and outrigger canoeing both locally and along the East Coast. The group was a driving force behind the creation of the Eastern Region Dragon Boat Federation and our coach currently serves as this body's Vice President. We will be cosponsoring the first dragon boat races in Washington, DC this Memorial Day weekend. Racing as the DC Dragons, the dragon boat team will also return to Toronto in hopes of repeating their incredible win in the Women's Open division last year. T he NCAWPA outrigger crew , one of the first women's outrigger teams on the East Coast, has been a dominant force in women's outrigger paddling. NCAWPA introduced Hawaiian outrigger canoeing to the National Capital Area in the mid-nineties and was a founding member of the East Coast Outrigger Association (ECORA). In just five years, races have cropped up in Florida, North Carolina, New York, Maryland, and Virginia. We go to most East Coast races, even a couple out west, and often come home with a medal or trophy. This year we will also host the third annual Washington Monumental outrigger race, the first outrigger race in DC, on June 1st.

Australia's History Outrigger canoeing was introduced during 1976 with the importation of a canoe from Hawaii. The first outrigger canoe club in Australia was formed on 28th of June 1978; Outrigger Canoe Club Australia, taking it's name from the famous Hawaiian club, Outrigger Canoe Club Hawaii. Much of this was achieved with the assistance of Keith Williams and Max Christmas, Gold Coast developers who shared a love of the ocean and ocean sports. In 1981 the first outrigger canoe regatta was staged on the Gold Coast. Keith Williams subsequently moved to Hamilton Island to develop the Hamilton Island resort and in doing so he introduced the sport of outrigger canoeing to the Whitsunday Islands and far north Queensland, which became the major growth area for the sport of outrigger canoe racing. In June 1983 the Hamilton Island Cup was first established and took on international status in 1989 when winners of the Molokai Hoe, Outrigger Canoe Club of Hawaii accepted an invitation from Keith Williams to participate. Today the Hamilton Cup has grown to be the showcase event of the Australian outrigger canoe racing calendar, attracting the best outrigger crews from around the world. In 1988 the Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association was established to oversee and administer the growth of the sport, taking much of it's initiative from the rules as based on the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association. In 1990, there were 11 outrigger canoe clubs of which most all were in the Whitsunday region of Queensland and by 1991 there were an amazing 23 clubs representing a greater than 100% increase over a twelve month period, with the bulk of the growth occurring in Southeast Queensland.
