Paralympics spotlight athletes with disabilities
August 14, 1996
Web posted at: 11:45 p.m. EDT From Correspondent Brian Cabell ATLANTA (CNN) It has been fewer than two weeks since the Summer Olympics ended and Atlantans bid farewell to distinguished athletes from all over the world. On Thursday, they will roll out the red carpet for another 3,500 distinguished athletes as the Paralympic Games get under way. If the running of the Paralympic torch is any measure, enthusiasm for the games for disabled athletes will rival that shown for the 10,700 Olympians. The bearers of the Paralympic torch have been warmly received. The torch was lit 10 days ago from the eternal flame at Martin Luther King's burial place in Atlanta, and traveled 1,000 miles. "Just as Dr. King taught us that the color of one's skin should not be the determinant of one's destiny, so too will the athletes in the Paralympics show that one's physical characteristics should not define the limits of one's potential," Andy Fleming, president of the Paralympic Games, said.
Training is rigorous
The physical characteristics of the Paralympians may vary, but the participants from 127 nations are indisputably premier athletes.

Olympic Factsheets Paralympics What are the Paralympic Games? They are the Olympic equivalent for the world's top athletes with disabilities. The Paralympic Games recognise the participants' athletic achievements rather than their disabilities. Athletes at the Paralympics include paraplegics, tetraplegics, amputees, blind and cerebral palsied individuals, "les-autres" and those with an intellectual disability. The Paralympics are held every four years, just after the Olympic Games and at the same venues. The name 'Paralympic' comes from the Latin PARA, meaning 'WITH". History of the Paralympic Games In 1944 the British Government set up a spinal injuries centre for ex-servicemen headed by Sir Ludwig Guttman at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. As part of their therapy, patients were introduced to a number of sports and in July, 1948 a sports competition involving patients from various rehabilitation centres took place. These were the first Stoke Mandeville Games. Three years later, competitors from Holland appeared at the Games and the international movement, now known as the Paralympics, was born. In 1976 Sir Ludwig succeeded in introducing the concept of the Winter Paralympics in which 30 nations now compete. When are the Paralympics?

Click here for more on this story Posted: Sunday October 29, 2000 1:50 PM Updated: Monday October 30, 2000 8:07 AM Fireworks highlighted the festivities as the 2000 Paralympics ended in Sydney. AP By Luba Vangelova, Special to CNNSI.com Eleven days ago, the 11th Paralympic Games began with a party. Sunday night they also ended with a party. But instead of the flash and noise of the opening ceremony, the two-hour closing ceremony relied more on Australians' trademark irreverent wit and also the high spirits of the athletes, their competitions now behind them. Fittingly for a sports festival that showcased ability rather than disability, the Turkmeni athlete who wowed the opening night crowds with his impromptu handstands opened tonight's party by dropping his crutches at one end of the infield and walking on his hands to a settee in the middle of the stadium. He pressed a remote control to set off fireworks all around him. The stadium screens showed a montage of highlights from the Paralympics as Australian singer Graeme Connors sang the sort of inspirational song that no Olympic or Paralympic ceremony can be without.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
The number of places available to Boccia for the Paralympic Games in Athens 2004 will be 80. This represents an increase of 25%, with 12 places from the new, non-cerebral palsy BC4 division.
The additional places that make up 80 requires us to include the BC4 classification. The figure is based on
Teams of 4 X 12 48
BC3 Pairs of 2 X 8 16
BC4 Pairs of 2 X 6 12
Plus 4 wild cards for top 4 seeded players.
At a time when slots to some other sports are being reduced, you will agree that this represents very good progress.
It is a great step forward towards the recognition of Boccia being not only a Paralympic Sport, but most of all, "THE" Paralympic Sport for the most severe disabled athletes.
This is a very important step forward in the development of our sport.
Yours in Sport, International Boccia Commission Official Athens 2004 Web-Site IBC@bocciainternational.com

Sailing for the 2004 Paralympics
4th Place -2002 Disabled Sailing World Championship Join Team Odyssey as we set sail for the ’04 Athens Paralympics. Team Odyssey is a United States disabled sailing team. We compete in Sonars – one of the Paralympic boat classes to be used in Athens – and our past successes have already qualified the United States for a Paralympic entry in Athens in ’04. Our goal this year is to win the right to represent the U.S. as that entry and to medal in Athens next year. To do this, however, Team Odyssey must raise $75,000, and we need your help. Join our team as we work to reach Athens and help us achieve our Olympic dream. Olympic medals are rarely won through chance; rather, they require a lot of hard work and strong financial support. Most medallists receive much of their support from their communities. Our families and friends have helped us get to where we are today. We’re now hoping to expand our base of support community wide as we raise the stakes and make a run to go for the gold. Please join our team and lend your support . We’re proud to have our community and friends standing beside us as we pursue our Olympic dream.
Team Odyssey finishes 2nd in Olympic Class Regatta
In Miami, Florida Team Odyssey finished second in the Sonar Class for the 2003 Olympic Class Regatta. This event, plus The Disabled Midwinters to be held in St. Petersburg in late March, are qualifying events to determine ranking on the U.S. Disabled Sailing Team.
