Indonesië bestaat uit meer dan 13000 eilanden, er zijn 360 gesproken talen, ongeveer 200 miljoen inwoners en meer dan 1800 verschillende Pencak Silat Stijlen. Je kunt je wel voorstellen dat geen enkele 2 stijlen er exact hetzelfde uitzien. Elke stijl heeft zijn karakteristieke eigenschappen verkregen door het gebied waar het ontwikkeld is en door de mensen die het ontwikkelden. In Indonesië word het Pencak Silat niet alleen gezien als een wijze van zelf- verdediging maar vooral als levenswijze waarbij het karakter van de beoefenaar gevormd wordt. Ik zal het hier alleen hebben over de West Javaanse stijlen. De mensen uit deze streek worden ook wel de Sunda mensen genoemd. Maar bij de beoefenaars kun je een betere omschrijving vinden.

By learning silat a Minangkabau may become a full-grown member of society ( urang nan sabana urang ). Silat is both a representation of Minangkabau culture and a means of transmitting it. The participants reflect on society, and the relations between the microcosmos, their own body, and the macrocosmos. In this article the set of basic silat movements ( langkah ) is analysed.
