    Pole Vaulting to Amsterdam
I'm flying Seattle to Amsterdam over the pole. Already we're halfway there. I scan the horizon from my window seat, looking for the aurora borealis . . . elusive flaming dancers that hint of a great faraway party you have to travel to find. They danced for me on my first flight to Europe. In thirty over-the-pole flights since, I've searched the horizon and seen not even a flicker. But I found my party. It's Europe. Rick Steves with his editor, Risa Laib, zoom over the North Pole on their way to Europe As I do each summer, I distill my material world into a carry-on-the-plane-size bag and leave our brash young land of God-given and self-evident truths for a refresher course in good living. For me, good living is freedom. It's packing light with an open mind and an empty journal. Our lives are rainbow arabesques that we paint ourselves and when I stop traveling I stop arcing upward. Someday I'll dream less of next year's trip and rely more on the slide carousels and journals of past adventures. But even though I'm older now, and more of a father figure than a travel buddy in youth hostels, I still have a need for empty passport pages.

Created by Peter Reppert, AIP More information on this subject can be found here TEXAS (August 16, 2000) Just as women's pole vaulting makes its debut at the upcoming Olympic 2000 games in Sydney, Australia, a physicist from the University of Texas says women are poised to make even bigger leaps in the record books. Cliff Frohlich, who has written articles on sports physics in the American Journal of Physics and the book The Physics ofSports, points out that while the men's pole vaulting record has stood for more than 6 years, we've yet to see the heights to which women will vault. By using a vaulter's sprint speed to determine the potential vertical height, Frohlich says he expects the women's record to top 17.5 feet soon. That's more than two feet higher than wherethe current record sits. The women's current world record holder, Stacy Dragila, an assistant track and field coach at Idaho State Usniversity, just set her latest record of 4.63 meters, or 15 feet 2.25 inches in July at the Olympic trials in Sacramento, California. The world record in men's pole vaulting is held by the Ukraine's Sergey Bubka, who cleared 6.14 meters or 20 feet 1.75 inches in a 1994 competition.

gave me a new PR. I have now been practiceing over the summer and willhopefully join the pole vaulting and track team at college.

Get Five DVDs for $.49 each. Join now. Tell me when this page is updated My Experiences While at practice I watched my teammate overbend his pole and sent it flying 30 ft behind the pit and left him lying on the ground. thankfully he wasn't hurt but amazing to watch it fly.
I was practice during spring break of my 11th grade year. I had been getting vertical and improving my form and I told my buddy to watch me and tell me what was wrong. Little did i know that a whole mess of things would be wrong. As I prepared for my run I concentrated on the run. Then I started one step after another one... two... three... four... five... six... seven... plant.. knee drive... rock back... snap!!!!!!! I landed face first into the pit with my feet lying in the plant box and my pole in two pieces. Luckily i wasn't injured but I couldn't say the same for the pole. It took awhile before I got my confidence back but i did.
I want to warn all those people who think that "oh that will never happen to me" because it can. During my senior year in High School I pulled a muscle in my right arm and I couldn't vault more than a couple times before my arm was in a great amount of pain. Another point I want to say is that if you are injured you should let it heal before putting more pressure on it. I didn't stop vaulting because I need to practice and help the team. Well my arm got better and then after a couple weeks I was at practice when I pulled out of a vault and then as I was landing on the pit I rolled back and was slipping off the back of the pit and put my hand down to stop myself but I injured my right hand and couldn't grip the top of the pole very tight. It wasn't until the end of my senior year at conference and sections that my injuries were almost fully healed. At conference I made 11' and then at sections I toped out at 12' feet which gave me a new PR.

by: Tim Werner New: Dennis Kohlov (NCAA Pole Vault Champion) Sand Pole Vault Drill Video The sequence pictures below are of the sand pole vault drill we do to teach the feel of riding the pole over and past the top of the box. We dig a hole in the sand to match the shape of the pole vault box. The vaulters first learn to do this drill with a low grip and short run from 2 lefts. That's 4 steps. As the vaulter gets more proficient at this drill, the pole will start to bend. It's easier to get the pole bending from 3 lefts. Coaching Points: The top hand is your support. Keep your support over your head until you pass the top of the box. Then, press your top hand forward, down and back keeping your top arm straight. Keep your head driving forward. Try to keep your trail leg back until the top hand passes over the top of the box. Land in the sand softly. This is sand pole vaulting. We first learn this drill from 2 lefts, then three lefts. The vaulter below is vaulting from 3 lefts. We do this drill with no turn. The emphasis in Sand Vaulting is in the plant, take off and swing. The vaulter below is in very good positions during that phase. On the way down he's just trying to get the pole out of the way because he's directly behind his pole. To do this drill better the vaulter's trail foot should swing directly down toward the pole tip and behind the pole or to the left and then come back over the pole to land on the right side of the pole.

Tech News Standards for Pole Vaulting It happens all the time. Accidents occur and solutions are proposed, but all too often a small group of volunteers must push the limits of their resources to bring about needed improvement. So it is with the stakeholders (literally) of active or experienced pole vaulters on a new ASTM task force. The group includes an orthopedic surgeon, a bronze-medal Olympian, an MIT biomechanic, equipment specialists, trainers, and others who are funding studies to support the development of voluntary consensus standards for pole vaulting. Part of ASTM Committee on Sports Equipment and Facilities, the group operates in Subcommittee F08.52 on Miscellaneous Playing Surfaces. Today, highly breakable fiberglass poles are the norm. One vaulter related an episode where, enroute to a meet, he retrieved broken poles from airport baggage. The poles pose both performance and safety issues and the task force is considering the following:
Industry and federation participation in this activity is invited. The group meets June 21-23 in Eugene, Ore., at the USATF National Championships.

Click here for more on this story Posted: Monday August 23, 1999 10:08 AM The sport of pole vaulting is struggling without Sergei Bubka, one of the greatest vaulters in history. Alex Livesey/Allsport SEVILLE, Spain (AP) Instead of the height, pole vaulters will face the void at the World Championships the emptiness left by the great Sergei Bubka. Ever since the World Championships started in 1983, his has been the lone face of pole vaulting six editions, six gold medals. The Ukrainian veteran, out injured this time, commands such respect among his toughest challengers that the issue of succession wasn't considered appropriate on the eve of qualifying in Seville. "If he would be here then we could succeed him," said Maksim Tarasov, long accustomed to playing second-best to Bubka. "If one of us will win seven world titles, then it is a succession."

    Collegiate pole vaulting undergoes changes
    Colleen Kane
    Assistant sports editor
Adam Jadhav The Daily Illini Eric Disilvestro makes a successful pole vault Feb. 8 during a meet at the Armory. Illinois pole vaulters began wearing helmets after Penn State pole vaulter Kevin Dare’s fatal accident at the Big Ten Championships last year. Illinois seniors Marty Keifer and Adam Pierson have gone through their pole vaulting careers knowing the dangers of what they do. But it wasn’t until they saw its reality first-hand that they started to take extra precautions. Keifer and all but one of the Illinois pole vaulters began to wear helmets after a tragedy at the Big Ten Indoor Championships last year in Minneapolis. Penn State pole vaulter Kevin Dare died from massive head trauma after he fell backward and hit his head while attempting a vault on Feb. 23, the first day of the meet. The rest of the meet was canceled as the track and field community mourned the loss. Sunday was the one year anniversary of Dare’s death. In addition to Dare’s death, high schoolers Jesus Quesada of Florida and Samoa Fili of Kansas both died after bouncing out of the pit and hitting their heads on the ground last year. Quesada’s death was just five days before Dare’s. Fili died five weeks later.
