Pole Vaulting: Teaching it Right
by Buzz Andrews
back to Coaches' Corner main page Pole vaulting is a step by step process that must be learned correctly from the beginning. I have seen too many bad habits formed early that are almost impossible to correct. So, I am putting this article together for other coaches to use as a guide for teaching the pole vault correctly from the beginning. Let me say now that I have seen a million hours of pole vaulting and no two vaulters jump the same, so remember that when you are watching film of world class vaulters, they may or may not look like the athlete you are coaching. Take in to consideration height, speed, and strength of the athlete when making your coaching decisions. The following 3 steps must happen before any vaulter can vault above his or her handhold. Let’s get started.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN ( June 20, 2002 ) — In line with one of the most important goals of all National Federation of State High School Associations rules committees, the NFHS Track and Field Rules Committee focused its efforts on minimizing risk in the pole vaulting competition at its annual meeting on June 10-11 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Call (800-561-4503) or email (phil@texastrack.com ) Phil to learn about M-F Athletic's First Place Prep pit which exceeds the new rules. The First Place Prep pit comes with a 10-year guarantee on all materials and workmanship and a lifetime guarantee on straps and handles. First Place pits use 22 oz. single-sided coated vinyl for the best protection available as well as a 2" foam top pad covering the entire landing surface. The Prep Pit is also available as part of a package which includes the 1) First Place Prep pit (21' 6" x 17' landing area behind the box) and weather cover, 2) First Place pole vault standards (which drop as low as 6'), 3) First Place base protector pads to cover the standards, and 4) two First Place Championship crossbars.

Introduction
Pole vaulting is a newly recognized sport for women in over 84 diffrent countries. It has become an Olympic sport for women in Sydney for the first time in history, equalizing the number of events for men and women in track and field competition.
Background Info
Running quickly down a runway, the vaulter carries a long, flexible pole. Then she stands the pole vertical and launches herself over a bar and onto a mat. This is how pole vaulters vault. There are still many techniques that each vaulter has to come up with herself. This sport takes strength and concentration, as well as flexability. It is challenging for the vaulter to get herself over the bar and get a high score.
The Top Ten
The top two pole vaulters today have a tie of 4.60 meters. Here are the top 10 vaulters from around the world: Records Name Height (meters) World Emma George World Stacey Dragila American Stacey Dragila Commonwealth Emma George Australian Emma George World Indoor Nicole Rieger-Humbert European Daniela B'artov'a Junior Yvonne Buschbaun African Elmarie Gerryts Asian Cai Weiyuang
Emma George, now one of the highest scoring women vaulters, started the sport when her coach put up a sign in her athletic club asking if there were any girls or women interested in pole vaulting. She started training for pole vaulting in 1994. A stress fracture in her foot, stopped her from pole vaulting for 6 or 7 weeks. After her recovery, she began to train for serious competition. Soon in tournament, she beat Tracy Shepard's record in Australia. Emma jumped 3.40 meters in Australia. In a different event, she won the first championship in Australia. Now, still jumping, Emma is a leader in pole vaulting around the world with a tie of 4.60 meters with competitor Stacey Dragila.

(John Bazemore/AP Photo) Pole Vault Physics Physicists Say Women Pole Vaulters Still Have Height to Clear
By Amanda Onion
Aug. 18
The athlete runs with a pole in hand, plants it in the ground and leaps over another pole.
But to a physicist, much more is at play. Consider this perspective:
As the pole lifts her upward, it returns the potential energy to Dragila in the form of gravitational potential energy. By the time she clears the bar, Dragila has just enough kinetic energy remaining to carry her past the bar. On her way down, the gravitational potential energy becomes kinetic again and is finally absorbed by the mat she hopefully lands on.
Got that?

Pole vaulting forward Over $1 million invested so far Doug Ashbury
Northern News Services Yellowknife (Nov 24/99) - Moulding an idea into reality is often very expensive. Just ask Bruce Elliott, production manager at Fiberglass North. Over the past 18 months, the firm has been working on a machine which will manufacture a composite fibreglass transmission pole. Elliott estimates it has cost $1.2 million to bring the project this far; to the brink of creating a prototype fibreglass transmission pole. He figures it will take about $1 million more in investments before the firm is a bonafide fibreglass transmission pole manufacturer. Why the fuss? After all, we are just talking about a pole to support power transmission lines. Well, claims Elliott, engineered fibreglass transmission pole manufacturers are not that common. And if that's not enough to spark interest, the North American transmission pole market is a $7 billion a year business, he said. Another plus is that wooden poles keep rotting but fibreglass won't rot or rust. Elliott's toying with the idea of taking the company public to raise more capital. Some of the funding to date has come from government.

Modern Pole Vaulting (Book)
Modern Pole Vaulting (Book) By Brian Ferry, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Ferry takes a close look at the efficient and effective vaulting styles of athletes from the former Soviet Union, and breaks down the technique. This book will help coaches understand the technicalities of this style of vaulting and will help athletes achieve higher heights. Each phase is analyzed in detail, explaining why and how this style can enhance vaulting performance. In addition, ideas on selecting the right type of pole for individual needs, as well as thoughts on training philosophy, are addressed throughout the book to help athletes. Pole vaulter lands on head at Big Ten meet
Associated Press
MINNEAPOLIS Penn State pole vaulter Kevin Dare died Saturday after landing on his head during the Big Ten indoor championships. Kevin Dare died Saturday after suffering a severe head injury. After being treated by emergency medical technicians at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse, Dare was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. He never regained consciousness, and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. Witnesses said the 19-year-old vaulter tumbled backward, headfirst, onto the metal "box," the area 8 inches deep that is used to plant the pole. He was attempting a vault of 15 feet, 7 inches, well below his personal best. "He swung upside down and sort of stalled with his jump," Minnesota assistant coach Mario Sategna said. "It looked like he became disoriented and didn't know where he was. I believe he thought he had cleared the bar and was on the other side of it."

Pole Vaulting Can Kill! Kids may be better off staying at home and watching tv rather than doing track and field according to a new study from the University of North Carolina (UNC). In what amounts to a shocking indictment of athletics and pole vaulting in particular, the research reveals that thirteen young US athletes - all high school boys - died from catastrophic accidents suffered while pole vaulting between fall 1982 and spring 1997. "All of them happen the same way. Either the athlete hits the landing pit and bounces out onto the hard surface surrounding the pit, or he misses the pit altogether", said Frederick Mueller, professor and chair of physical education, exercise and sport science at UNC (Mueller also directs the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injuries).
