The hot 100 count-up... 100 things I hate, or like, or am generally indifferent about me:
1. The sad truth is I didn't leave home until I was 23
2. The sadder truth is I went back again a year and two months later
3. I got out of the house 6 months after that
4. I'm not going back there
5. I had fish once, for about two weeks
6. I had a dog named Griffer when I was young
7. I'm still not quite sure what happened to him
8. My parents told me he ran away 9. My sister told me they put him down and lied to me 10. My favorite childhood toys were Masters of the Universe (He-Man) toys 11. I destroyed my favorite childhood toys with a hammer when I was 13 or 14 12. I keep personal journals 13. I sometimes share their contents, but no one's allowed to read them 14. I have a fond affinity for Superman 15. It's probably because my last name is Kent 16. The only nickname that ever stuck was "Gray-Go" 17. Gray-Go was an alternate personality whom I killed off in '97 18. I've never owned any white denim 19. I used to eat dog food when I was a kid

Grip
Grip width is a personal matter, but generally you will want to keep the hands between thigh and shoulder width apart. The top hand should be under and the bottom hand over the pole during the carry, with both wrists directly behind the pole in the plant position.
Wide Grip – Makes it easier to bend and control the pole at takeoff, but more difficult for the athlete to fully invert. The top hand also has a tendency to get behind the athlete's hip during the approach with a wide grip. Narrow Grip – Makes it easier to get inverted and keep the top hand next to the hip during the approach, but more difficult to keep the bottom arm straight and control the pole during the plant and takeoff.
Approach
The athlete's speed should gradually and consistently build from start to finish, with top speed being reached two to three steps before takeoff.
Approach Length – Determined by the skill level of the athlete. Beginners should start around six strides for full jumps and not move back until proficient at that length. Male National/Elite jumpers generally use 9-10 strides, with the women using 8-9 strides.

68. VISUAL SKILL AND POLE VAULTING
VISUAL SKILL AND pole vaulting. BRIAN RISK. VISUAL NEEDS OF pole vaulting. Tothe lay person, it is obvious that a pole vaulter would need good eyesight.

VISUAL SKILL AND POLE VAULTING BRIAN RISK NATIONAL POLE VAULT CHAIR FOR CANADA (This is a very slightly edited version of an article published in the Winter 2000 edition of Track Coach. Serious vaulters and coaches should read "Heat It Up!: Achieving Full Potential in the Pole Vault" by Risk. Ordering information and other good PV info is available at: http://www-chi.nearnorth.edu.on.ca/polevault/index.html (that is correct, there is a dash after www) I recall talking to an Olympian following the Games in Atlanta. She had competed in her second Olympic Games, performed a new personal best but, was quite distraught. Her performance had been superb. But, she was a mere twelve-hundredths of a second from gold and four-hundredths from bronze. She was fourth and would receive no financial reward from the business world. Fourth place finishers simply do not attract the necessary corporate support to train, live and survive on the world scene. She would retire and not attempt a third Olympic Games due to financial hardship. The difference in performance between first and fourth is often minuscule. In fact, at world levels, the top ten performers are notably similar. It is the slightest of edges that make the difference on race day.

BEGINNING pole vaulting PROGRESSIONS AND FORMULAS. By Jan Johnson.PART PART 2. SHORTRUN VAULTING WITH NO BEND IN THE POLE. Start
http://www.coachr.org/pvbegin.htm
BEGINNING POLE VAULTING PROGRESSIONS AND FORMULAS By: Jan Johnson PART 1. GRASS VAULTING-THE FIRST STEP IN THE PROGRESSION Selecting the proper starting grip is very important for learning the be- ginning drill sequence. Choosing a grip that is too high will make it impossible to learn the most efficient takeoff technique. Once the proper starting grip has been established, don't hesitate to progress quickly to the optimum grip, by raising hands in 2" or 3" increments, until the correct amount of pole speed is obtained. For the purposes of learning the grass vaulting sequence outlined below, start by gripping the pole only as high as you can grip with your top hand when the pole plug is between your feet.
  • Overhead carry tip taps. Walk and jog while carrying the pole overhead, tapping the pole plug on the ground with each left-foot contact. Tap the plug directly in from your takeoff foot so that your arms are extended directly over- head. Proper carry and planting mechanics featuring high hands, low tip. Push pole slightly for- ward and then up so that hands are under the pole on the penultimate step. Push the pole straight up for an arms-extended position prior to pole tip passing the front of the planting box.

QUESTION ARCHIVE.. Question: Where are the best universities to attend for both academics and pole vaulting? Who offers the best scholarships? My daughter is a 4.0+ GPA freshman student and competed in the 2003 Pole Vault Summit - High School Division 6.
Answer: It is acknowledged there are many more Academic scholarships available than Athletic scholarships. I regret we do not have the resources or qualifications to offer a summary of the best Universities for academics and pole-vaulting. However we suggest you begin by researching your in-state Universities: Northern Arizona, Arizona State and the University of Arizona. All of these schools have excellent and top ranked Track programs. With your daughters high GPA we expect she will have many options. Back To Top.

The physics of pole-vaulting Pole-vaulting was not one of the original Olympic sports in ancient Greece. Some think that the sport was derived from the Dutch habit of dyke-jumping, although one of the earliest pole-vaulting stands was built in Germany in 1791. The objective is, obviously, to get the athlete's centre of mass over the highest bar possible. However, today's pole-vaulters use a quite different technique to that used 100 years ago, when athletes went over the bar with their feet pointing downwards. Athletes now do a complex gymnastic manoeuvre, turning upside down as the jump takes place (figure 2a). We shall see that this is a direct result of the technology used. (figure 2) The rules for pole-vaulting that are set by the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) the sport's governing body are extremely liberal. There is no restriction on the length of the pole, the materials from which it is constructed or its energy-storage capacity. The only stipulation is that poles should be generally smooth and not be covered with too much adhesive tape. Poles were originally made out of solid wood, probably hickory. Slightly more flexible bamboo poles were introduced in the early 1900s, mostly by American vaulters, who dominated the sport at the time. Basic mechanics tells us that the highest stresses occur on the outside of a bent beam, and that a symmetrically bent object, such as a pole, actually has a zone down the middle (known as the neutral axis) where the stresses are very low and even zero. There is therefore no need for the pole to have any mass down the centre. Bamboo, which is a naturally hollow material, is much lighter per unit length than a solid pole yet provides the same maximum stress. This enables an athlete carrying a bamboo pole to either take a faster run-up or to use a slightly longer pole.
