History of Motorsport 1900-1980 Rallying Rally is undeniably a motorsport with it's roots fixed firmly in Europe and has remained so for many years; even today the sport is followed fanatically in the USA but only by a small handful like darts to the British, if you will. And if you happen to be an American resident, it's easy to understand the lack of interest in such an odd little activity. Long-distance time trials were commonplace in the 1950s and accuracy in the navigation was somewhat more important than outright speed. The crews existed of two or three and none of them were expected to wear helmets or other clothing in the interests of safety. But of course it was still very much a battle against all the conditions weather could throw at you, with time stated as your enemy. The cars, pretty much standard save for upgraded tyres and extra lights, reflected the sport's accessibility. Anybody from Dad to a professional could get in a rally car and compete although many entries were 'works' cars, entered directly by the manufacturers eager to prove the durability of their models in adverse conditions. Alpine rallies were tests of reliability as opposed to outright speed, as was the Monte Carlo. Handicapping existed in those days so road-going Minis could compete against powerful saloons with a chance.

The banner was 40-metres in length
A huge banner has been draped from one of Britain's largest sculptures by pro-hunt campaigners in an attempt to rally support for their cause. About 100 members of the Real CA hung their message over the wings of the Angel of the North, in Gateshead, on Thursday. Two riggers climbed the 65ft sculpture to unveil a 40-metre long and 10-metre high red banner which read "love hunting join our war". The banner was unveiled at 0700 GMT as dawn was breaking behind the huge metal structure. The view was stunning and we could see the traffic on the A1 slowing down and there was plenty of beeping
Ned Baring, rigger
It was taken down after an hour as rush hour traffic began to back up on the A1. Edward Duke, one of the organisers, said the protest was to show opposition to proposed amendments to the hunting Bill currently going through Parliament. "This Bill is now well through committee stage and has become nothing more than a back door ban on hunting.

Rheingold and Powazek: Two great tastes that taste great together
Derek "Heather's Spouse" Powazek interviews Howard "Online Community" Rheingold on the past and future of online community. I think there has been a partial breakdown of the cooperative ethic that an essential element to the success and growth of the early internet. Back then there was a certain amount of understanding of basic netiquette and an expectation of a cooperative behavior. That was the norm from the very beginning and that has made the internet valuable. Those norms are not located in any handbook, although you can find some basic documents on netiquette. They've mostly been taught to newcomers by the people who were already there. What used to happen was that every September, a bunch of new freshmen would join universities and get their first internet accounts and would start flooding Usenet, asking questions that were already answered in the FAQ and doing other things that were breaches of basic netiquette. They would then be educated by the old-timers, sometimes rather rudely, sometimes more patiently. But the old-timers took the time, even if they were flaming, to pass on the norms. 48. Welcome To Time-speed-distance Road Rallying.
Here are some files that will help you learn. A tutorial on road rallying. ToEsther's Home Page. What is Road rallying?/moose+@cmu.edu.
http://www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~moose/plug.html
Looking for a pleasant yet adventurous way to get away on a Sunday afternoon? Be a road rallyist!
What Is A Road Rally?
  • A Road Rally is not a race.
  • A Road Rally is not illegal.
  • A Road Rally does not require special equipment.
  • A Road Rally is an amateur event.
  • A Road Rally encourages novices to participate.
  • A Road Rally is a lot of fun.
In a Road Rally, each team of two peoplea driver and a navigatoris given a set of route directions to follow, and the speeds at which they should travel the route. The route will generally consist of rural and quieter back roads. At the very least, you'll have a nice drive in the country! The goal of a Road Rally is to travel the correct route at the correct speeds, and arrive at ``checkpoints'' precisely on time. You are scored on how closely to the correct time you arrive. A Road Rally is not a race, and no rally will ever require you to drive in a reckless or illegal fashion. Arriving too early at a checkpoint hurts your score, as does arriving too late. Novices are especially encouraged to participate in Road Rallies. Novices compete within a special Novice Class, and not with the more experienced rallyists.

Join a Car Club
There are a number of active rally car clubs in Victoria. Some clubs are focused exclusively on rallying while others on all forms of motorsport. You can join a car club without being a competitor or wanting to compete. Often you can go to a club meeting as a visitor to see what the club is like before you join. For a list of car clubs click here
Contact C.A.M.S.
The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport or CAMS as it is better known is the governing body of all motorsport within Australia. Check our their website for contact details.
Spectating
Spectating is a great way to get involved in rallying and on most events in Victoria is FREE of charge. Most events will produce a spectator guide that will tell you what time and where to go to see all the action. Because spectator guides also tell competitors where they will be going (in the case of navigational events), they are often not released until the day of the event.
Become an Official
This is the best way to get started in rallying because you will meet a lot of key people who are heavily involved in the sport and are also helping others to run their event. To become an official simply contact the event's secretary and let them know that you are interested in helping, you dont even have to a member of their car club. There are a number of different roles that you can do as an official and all event organisers are always willing to accept help from others. Best of all you will get closer to the action than spectating as you will have your own private spot to view the cars go buy.
