This page is devoted to Recumbents and FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) We have ridden and sold recumbents for several years, and some common questions have come up. Below is a sampling. If you have a question regarding recumbents that you do not see addressed, please email us at: RDBikeShop@aol.com How do I learn to ride them? Where can I ride my recumbent How do I transport my recumbent if I don't want to ride from my home? ... Where can I read more about recumbents and recumbent riding Check out the 2003 Rans Rocket - click on the image to go to their site. How do I learn to ride them? We will assist you. We have several areas near our shop where novice recumbent riders can learn how to ride their new bike. Contact us and we will arrange a time and date to test ride. These are some tips we give to our new bent' riders:
  • Relax! Really- sit back, let your back feel the back of the recumbent seat. Unlike your upright bike, you do not lean forward to ride. Do not use a death like grip on the handlebars. See the above suggestion regarding relaxing. A recumbent rider needs only to lightly rest their hands on their handlebars. Those with complaints of over steering or steering problems need to look to the amount of grip they are applying to their handlebars. Do not try to climb out of the saddle when you go up a hill. The key to successful hill climbing on a recumbent is gear down and spin.

The recumbent experience is totally unique in the bicycle world. There are racers, in streamliners, tourists riding across the country, average folks riding for fun or fitness and club rides and somebody's mom getting back on a bike after 20 years. The one thing they all have in common is comfort. You know that you have hit upon something great when you can ride 25 or 125 miles and be comfortable the entire ride - seated on your hi-tech recumbent bicycle. Bicycle industry designers continue trying to reinvent the upright bicycle - with limited success. Recumbent designers may have different ideas on geometry, style, look and performance - but most know what the bottom-line is COMFORT! We don't care who you are, what you do for a living, where you live, what color or sex you are, your height or weight, what kind of a car you drive, how little or how much you ride - we are accepting of all people with an interest in recumbent bikes. And for those that are not - we'll try to convert you in a subtle way - through our passion for recumbent bicycles.

    http://www.piloto.u-net.com/pages/eng2.htm
Read this for the best argument yet in favour of 'bents
    Recumbent Cycles
The concept of a recumbent cycle was first explained to me by a colleague Steve Shaw. Initially I was somewhat sceptical about the idea of steering from under the seat, but all the other engineering principles of recumbent bikes made sense to me, and I was determined one day to buy one. The day came when Linda told me that I would have to stop using her bicycle and buy my own because she wanted to go touring with me. You should be able to see me riding my bike, a Ryan Vanguard, in the picture above. Linda's bike was so good (a Flying Scot) that I would have been very unhappy buying a cheap bike as a replacement for hers. But if I was going to spend hunners of dosh, I would rather spend it on something I really wanted. That could only be a recumbent. The Vanguard is a classic recumbent design and probably the best all round recumbent cycle. It is a touring bike and is a bit heavier than a racing cycle. The long wheelbase design makes it stable and easy to control. The underseat steering allows your arms to lie in a comfortable postion for long distance cycling. Short wheel base cycles are lighter and generally faster. They are "twitchier" to steer and thus less suitable for long rides as you have to be "on the ball" all the time.
