Hamilton father and angry neighbour face off over bylaw By NANCY CARR Canadian Press Road hockey: A proud Canadian sporting tradition or a dangerous nuisance? A Hamilton court will weigh in Monday on a father's fate after he played hockey with his kids on their street, infuriating a neighbour while breaking a bylaw that divides neighbourhoods nationwide. "The bylaw says we stay off the street," said Nadia Ciuriak, whose garden has been invaded by countless stray hockey balls from Gary Kotar's kids over the years. "If people want street hockey, the proper way of dealing with that is to go to city council and insist that the bylaw gets removed."

Road Hockey Nowhere in the great Dominion of Canada in the 1940s was road hockey more enshrined than in the teeming huddled slums of North Winnipeg. There no one could afford skates, nor indeed could anyone afford a tennis ball. The puck we used was a piece of coal or a sock with a rock in it. There were no neighbourly tulip flowerpots to worry about. There were tenement apartment blocks, tarpaper shacks, porous frame houses, but no gardens, no lawns, no flowerpots. Nor did the road hockey games I played day in and day out ever attract the attention of our moms and dads. They had socialist or communist meetings to attend, synagogue services to soothe their souls, and huge ideological arguments to keep them completely occupied and out of their kids’ hair. Our parents never saw a hockey game in their lives. They would have been horrified by a game on ice played on the rink in the back of Dom Polski, the Holy Ghost Church, the largest Polish church in Western Canada. Perhaps they would have been alarmed by the politically incorrect scoreboard that read: “Polacks 10, Yids 6.”

Neighbours Try To Ban Road Hockey
May 23, 2000 Kids playing hockey If some people get their way, it could one day be illegal to play road hockey in parts of Port Coquitlam, British Columbia. Some residents at the Riverwood Condominiums in Port Coquitlam think road hockey is a noisy nuisance. The upset citizens have hired lawyer Marvin Lithwick to try to get the Supreme Court of British Columbia to outlaw road hockey in their community. More specifically, they want local road hockey players Jared and Kyle Green to pack up their hockey gear and get off the road. "They're affecting people's enjoyment of their units. There's noise. There's clamouring of sticks. There's balls hitting garages; there are people hitting garages," says Lithwick. Kyle Green defends road hockey. He says, "I can't believe they're taking us to court for playing in a public area like this. It's a family complex. Families should be able to do what they want to do." Links:

ROAD HOCKEY BAN?
WHAT GIVES?
By Ron Wright
REMEMBER WHEN... Its Saturday afternoon and the sun is shining, the temperature is cool, just cool enough to work up a sweat playing road hockey. You have to get you your road hockey stick out, not your ice hockey stick because it will get wrecked and your slap shot will be lousy. So you get out your road hockey stick. Yea the one with the fuzz on the bottom and the tape flapping away and hanging on for dear life. Your stick is now about an inch thick from top to bottom because of your stick handling the tennis ball down the asphalt roadway, but you get great slap shots with it. You have to repair the holes in the nets because you don't want to chase the ball half way down the street. The game looses its tempo, then.

3rd Annual Road Hockey Game
(Information supplied on this topic is from experience only, and in no way reflects policies, regulations, or laws from either Canada, USA, Manitoba, or Minnesota). Our Third Annual Street Hockey Game was hosted by the Edwards Family this year, in Shakopee, M on March 22, 2002. About 15 people showed up on a brisk March afternoon to re-live their Bobby Hull years, get whacked in the shins, drink some "imported" beer, and roast some dogs. Much thanks to the Edwards family for the location, and hospitality.
Please feel free to e-mail Dave Edwards at dave@canuck.com for more information.

First Annual road Hockey Game
(Information supplied on this topic is from experience only, and in no way reflects policies, regulations, or laws from either Canada, USA, Manitoba, or Minnesota). Street Hockey Summary Well, it seemed to go off well, in my opinion.
The head count peaked at around the low 30's, I believe. Lots of people meeting for the 1st time, some having only met once at the Canada day picnic. We even had a couple drive up who lived in the area and noticed all the cars and people, and red-faced old men running around the street with hockey sticks (lined with Canadian flags) and had to stop and introduce themselves as Canadians (with hockey sticks in the trunk I might add) and will likely be joining our little social family of Canucks down here. Before the post game summary; special thanks. 1st, to the Marriotts, for letting us use their home, BBQ, chairs, and all the preparation in snow blowing the sides (like boards) and even a penalty box. 2nd, to Andrew Brown (and Wardrop Technologies), not there in body, but fully represented in spirit , for donating the 'refreshments' and skills contest prize; and lastly, Doug Mcgavin and Abba Tregobov for bringing nets (and sticks). Certainly, thanks to all who took the time to attend and meet and share their day with other Canucks here in the Twin Cities.

Pig Farming Goalie enjoys taste of victory
by Jay Suburb
Pig Farming Goalie enjoys the taste of victory. Especially when it comes in an ice cold can. The agrarian goaltender and his speedy mates overcame a sluggish start to rout their overmatched opponents, 20-6 and claim the boozy bounty in Sunday's Six-pack Challenge. "Beer taste very good," says Pig Farming Goalie, sipping his cream ale conquest. Especially since the Challenge had been issued by his netminding nemesis, Lobsterboy, who was emboldened by a string of wins since returning to the crease from a two-month hiatus. "We've had tough rivalry all time," says the agrarian goaltender of his creaseminding competitor. "Lots of talk from Lobsterboy, but his team just couldn't stand up to barrage."

Elvis' spin misdirected
I was quite enjoying Elvis' rant and was pretty much agreeing with him point for point. However, after laying out a persuasive argument regarding unnecessary and uncalled for insults, he then took an unnecesary and uncalled for shot at me regarding my "fair-weather" status. I believe that this season, I have laid to rest the "myth" about me not playing in bad weather. How interesting it was to see that in the last game, I was out there playing in the rain and even shooting on the correct net. Perhaps given his directional abilities, young Elvis should think twice about playing in bad weather. Beetle Boy
