MADISON, Wisc. Three teams helped themselves the hard way on Friday (Jan. 3) night on the road as St. Cloud State, Minnesota State and Michigan Tech all earned Western Collegiate Hockey Association victories away from home. SCSU upended host Minnesota, 4-3, to move into a third place tie with the Golden Gophers, the visiting Mavericks edged Wisconsin, 3-2 in overtime, to move into a fifth place tie, and the MTU Huskies blanked host Alaska Anchorage, 4-0, to earn their first league win of the season and also move up one place in the standings. In the league's marquee series at Grand Forks, meanwhile, No. 1-ranked and host North Dakota (18-1-2) and No. 3-ranked and league-leading Colorado College (16-2-3) played to a 4-4 overtime tie Friday a result that left the Tigers' three-point lead over the Fighting Sioux intact heading into tonight's (Jan. 4) contest. And in a non-conference matchup out east, Minnesota Duluth fell 5-2 to Rensselaer.

Wrestling Maine women's hockey continues road trip in New Hampshire By Matt Hritz The Maine Campus ORONO, Maine (U-WIRE) The Maine women's ice hockey team started the 2002-03 season on the road last weekend with two games in Burlington, Vt. against the Vermont Catamounts. The Black Bears came home with two convincing wins and look to continue that trend as they travel to Durham, N.H. to play rival New Hampshire this weekend. "It felt good to get off to a good start with two wins," junior forward Meagan Aarts said. "This weekend was important because it got us into game mode and got us thinking about what we need to work on for next weekend." For her achievements last weekend, Aarts was named the Women's Hockey East Conference Player of the Week. Aarts scored two goals and added two assists. Juniors Karen Droog and Lara Smart also played well with Droog scoring two goals and one assist, and Smart made 20 saves in a 4-0 shutout against the Catamounts. The opening weekend for the Black Bears was a success for the most part with only a few exceptions, according to head coach Rick Filighera.

ROAD TO THE PROS:
The Western Professional Hockey League is proud to bring the excitement of hockey to Lubbock. Because the WPHL has been designed for growth, and the National Hockey League has enjoyed overwhelming success in untraditional markets like Florida, Texas, and California, the WPHL is positioned to develop future relationships with the NHL and its teams. Players on the Lubbock Cotton Kings roster are under contract to the WPHL and are just a slap shot away from the NHL. To reach this level of professional hockey, a player takes one of two roads, college hockey or junior hockey. A junior player can play until he is 21 and then turn pro or continue his formal education and play at a Canadian University. Hockey Lingo Road to the Pros Game Basics The Rink ... BACK TO HOCKEY 101

Fairfield University used three, second period, goals to defeat Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Bentley College, 3-2, spoiling Bentley's home opener. The Falcons of Bentley College got on the board first when junior Joe Lovell scored his first goal of the season at 11:33 of the first period, with helpers being credited to freshman Josh and sophomore Bryan Goodwin. The Falcons would take the one goal cushion into the first intermission. The second period belonged to the Stags. OCSN Newswire Get Your Stags Gear! Free Email Newsletter Ice Hockey Falls to UConn, 5-4 on the Road Metz registers a pair of assists. Jan. 10, 2003 STORRS, Conn. - The Fairfield University hockey team held a 3-1 lead heading into the third period, but gave up three unanswered tallies en route to a 5-4 MAAC loss tonight to the Huskies of the University of Connecticut. The loss drops the Stags to 3-13-1 overall and 2-7-1 in the league. Fairfield jumped on the board at the 3:03 mark of the first period. From in front of the net between the face-off circles, Joseph Maglaque took a shot that bounced in off the pads of UConn goalie Jason Carey. Rae Metz and Ryan Tormey would collect the assists. Exactly four-minutes later, Matt Grew broke out from a face-off past the Stag defense and rocketed one into the top corner of the Fairfield net for a short-handed tally. The Stags dominated the second period, taking a commanding 3-1 lead. After an initial Fairfield shot, Carey could not get a hold to make the save causing a Husky and Stag scramble in the crease pushing the puck of the goal line.

The Oswego High School girls’ hockey team suffered a 5-0 loss Saturday to Salmon River High School, out of Fort Covington. Oswego coach Ted Beers said, "Their team has been playing together for a few years now and this year have gone to varsity. They came out strong in the first and scored two goals while shutting us down." The second period saw Oswego give up a shorthanded goal as the home team exploded for three unanswered goals to lead 5-0. However, in the third period, Oswego refused to give up and limited the opposition to just one shot while taking 15 on the Salmon River goalie. Goalie Erin Murphy played outstanding in the first period and turned aside 23 shots in tandem with Jennifer Nielsen who stopped 22. Nielsen held Salmon River scoreless in the third period.

Hockey Loses a Pair of Road Games
By Matthew Van Horne TEAM MEMBER After a fast start to the season, beating Daniel Webster and WPI 3-1 and 3-2 respectively, the Engineers had a rough set of two games on the road. On November 10, the team made the long trip to Lyndonville, Vermont to play the Lyndon State Hornets. MIT came out fast in the first two periods, going into the locker room before the last period ahead 4-2. However, some overconfidence and a few ill-timed penalties gave the Hornets the break they needed to get back into the game. Lyndon State was able to sneak three goals in during the final period to win the game 5-4. The game was not over yet as MIT got a face-off deep in the Bryant end a minute later. The Engineers won the face-off and Brent R. Fisher G was left wide open near the net with the puck. Fisher put a shot past the Bryant goalie to tie the game at one goal each. The score remained at 1-1 as time expired sending the game into a five minute, sudden-death overtime. Parker E. Larson G won the face off, but had the puck stolen from his stick by a Bryant defender. The defender hit a breaking teammate for their fourth breakaway of the game. This time they found the back of the net, beating Van Horne to his right side. The Engineers, now 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the league, continue a five game home stand with Coast Guard on Saturday, December 1.
