A homecoming queen at Upper Iowa can become "the hottest thing on wheels" with a "million-dollar body." Stacey Blitsch of Oelwein competed in volleyball and cross country at Upper Iowa. She was the school's 1997 homecoming queen. Now, she leads the California Quakes' "Bod Squad" in a venture called "RollerJam." "RollerJam" premieres Friday night on The Nashville Network. It is a modern-day Roller Derby, with teams of male and female in-line skaters. It features fast, rough-and-tumble action on a sharply banked track at Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla. Blitsch's team will debut on TNN Jan. 22. "With my character, people will either love me or hate me," Blitsch said. "Hopefully, it will be a character everyone is drawn to." "RollerJam" is show business mixed with athleticism. Blitsch, 23, already had the athletic part down. She earned a bachelor of science degree in fitness and athletics training at Upper Iowa. She went to Florida on a college internship and found work with the "American Gladiators," a defunct company that staged televised and live performances of unusual and challenging sports competitions.

Resolute and relentless are good words to describe RollerJam players, because, like gladiators at the Roman Coliseum, the rules do not allow tie games. WOW!!! This is what sports was meant to be: sex, speed, violence and, most of all, no wimpy split decisions about who won. This game is about one, and only one, thing - knocking your opponent on his or her keister as fast as you can. There are no nostalgic stories about peach baskets and YMCA directors trying to keep baseball players in shape during the winter. No one waxes poetic about skill and strategy. No one has to explain why the dugout cleared or apologize for a punch thrown in retribution. Everyone knows the deal - knock 'em down and win.

Slam-bam thank you ma'am! by John Hedgecoth A week-long stay at an area hospital recently had but one bright spot. I have given a name to my pleasure, and it is RollerJam. If you are among the uninitiated, the World Skating League (WSL) RollerJam is a made for television "sport" purporting to be the revival of roller derby, an entertainment medium popular in the 30s through 50s. (Like, say, bowling or lawn darts.) In-line skaters chase each other around an indoor track in an effort to knock opponents down and sometimes even score points. It is televised on The Nashville Network (hello - red flag!), and drew raves in its January 15, 1999 debut. My bookmark is already pointed to www.rollerjam.com. So is it for real? The beefcake-and-cheesecake show introduces women athletes to the demographic interested in professional wrestling, and RollerJam loses none of the flash and swagger of its predecessors in the field. Sort of like Baywatch-meets-Jerry Springer. Players carp at each other on and off the field, and show is more important than go. But is it for real? The bottle-blonde California team, the Quakes, is led by Stacey Blitsch, who hails from Oelwein, Iowa. Yup, that's right, even the ultimate RollerJam California girl isn't. But man, Stacey is the reason I became a fan. She's cute, mouthy and she kicks much butt! Blitsch is the most famous Iowan since Lt. Jadzia Dax on Deep Space Nine. Oh, RollerJam is for real alright. Consider the attributes of RollerJam and you will understand why it will be absolutely huge, a ratings draw that actually will surpass the popularity of its cable cousins, the WWF and WCW. (If the WCW is fixed, then why does the middle initial stand for "Championship?" See, it's all for real.)

However, we are very concerned with one program which your company owns and that we all enjoy every week: Rollerjam Rollerjam is an updated form of the Roller-derby, and is a very exciting, very promising program. However, it has been relegated to a relatively weak timespot (9pm Friday night) on its current home network TNN. As a result, Rollerjam has received poor ratings. I, Paul Staedinger, and many others have attempted to help the program by word of mouth and various internet fan sites. I honestly beleived that Rollerjam would be more heavily advertised when TNN was fortunate enough to receive the rights to broadcast the World Wrestling Federation's "Monday Night RAW" since Rollerjam is very similar to Pro Wrestling. Unfortunately, this did not happen. I can honestly say that as someone who watches TNN frequently, I have NEVER seen a commercial for Rollerjam on any other program. It is my opinion, that TNN has attempted to "kill" Rollerjam for the past year, and thus there have been no attempts by the network to invigorate the program's ratings. I have personally called TNN's programming line several times to ask about the cancellation and have been told by several different operators that Rollerjam has not been cancelled and that it is on the schedule until March. Now, in a very tasteless move, TNN has announced that this Friday's (1/19/01) broadcast of Rollerjam is the final broadcast. This is indicative of how TNN has handled this program, and I believe it is wrong.

In a time where people are hungry for a new challenge or looking to improve some old sport, this one is back. But it has added a modern look while keeping the same old brutish ways. Enter RollerJam. The extreme sport is back with a new name and a new look for the `90s. Gone are the quad skates and in place are in-lines, bringing more speed. It has teams of men and women in tight, flashy outfits and protective equipment dishing out slingshots, clotheslines and body checks around a small rink. And like myself, you probably stopped in the middle of your surf to check out what you thought you saw flash before your eyes. What the heck kind of sport is this? Well, think of it as "tag" meets wrestling on wheels. Except when you get tagged, you are usually on your back after being jolted out of the banked track and wishing your tailbone was in place.
