Dive Reviews
A few facts... Generally the weather is good for diving all year. The hurricane season extends from about June to November. The water temperature in Hawaii can get as high as 82 degrees in the Summer and as low as 72 degrees in the Winter (wear a wetsuit for that long dive). The humpback whale season is from late November to April. There is no hyperbaric chamber on Maui, you have to be treated for DCS on Oahu. This Page Last Updated on 1/15/99 Scuba diving in Hawaii can be an exciting, wonderful experience. In Maui County, which includes the Islands of Maui, Lanai, and Molokai, the diving is plentiful with a lot of variety. Just like anywhere else the local conditions will vary. Generally there is better visibility on boat dives rather than shore dives. However, with shore dives there is more variety. Most (but not all) of the dive boats go to specific areas, sort of a "known quantity" for diving. Some of the smaller operations will try to make the experience more memorable, often by being more flexible as to where to dive.
Dive Site / Operation Review
It is always prudent to check the weather and conditions before you dive. Below are a few locations that will provide that information.

JJ's Home

Why....scuba diving? There is nothing like the feeling of freedom of your first dive in warm, clear, tropical water. You swoop effortlessly through the water, not held back by the need to return to the surface. Even your scuba equipment, so heavy and cumbersome on land, loses its weight and doesn't impede your movement. Thousands of irridescent fish fin past and as you look down to the rocks below you see a moray eel, gaping at you from its den. Clown fish nestle in their soft coral homes, parrot fish nip at the harder coral fronds. Bizarrely-shaped box fish seem to peer at you as they float by. As you go lower the sound of the waves breaking on the reef die down and all you can hear is the rumble of air passing your ears as you exhale, otherwise nothing. With a slow barrel-roll you look up through the clear blue water to see the silvery surface far above you. Everywhere you look there is another wonder, another beautiful thing to explore, another weird and wonderful creature to follow. Perhaps in the distance you see a turtle gliding down to the colder depths. A flash of silver bubbles stream in front of you as a bird dives into the water in search of fish. An alien in this environment it must swiftly return to the surface, while you carry on pottering, wandering through your coral garden.

PREFACE
Unless you score 80% or better on the short scuba quiz , you can probably benefit from reading this book. Knowledge of basic underwater physiology is critical to diving safety, of course, and the subject is taught in every certification class. For example, the first rule of diving don't hold your breath is based on Boyle's law of gas pressures, which predicts that a scuba diver's lungs will expand if breath is held on ascent. The consequence can be a serious and even fatal over-expansion injury.
Although all certification manuals and general scuba books review underwater physiology, the coverage is necessarily limited. Typically, one chapter is devoted to the subject. Important effects of altered physiology, such as decompression sickness and arterial gas embolism, are covered only briefly.
As a recreational diver and pulmonary physician, I believe there is need for a book that more fully explains this material. Not a textbook for the doctor, engineer or scientist, but a book any recreational diver can understand. A book that answers questions frequently pondered by the recreational diver. After searching and finding no such book, I decided to write one! Scuba Diving Explained is intended for all sport divers because the material is important for all of us, from beginner to people with years of experience.
