Q24: I have heard that a unified lower and upper secondary school education system has been accomplished, but what are these schools like?Furthermore, there are currently no such schools in the vicinity of my house and I would like to know how many more of these schools are planned in the future.
A:Aiming to realize education that emphasizesthe individuality of the student, from April1999,in addition to current lower and uppersecondary schools, the unified lower andupper secondary school system was imple-mented to enable students to select a cur-riculum and an educational environmentthat is consistent for six years. Each prefecture is progressing with theaim to establish at least one such school ineach upper secondary school zone(about500 nationwide).
There are three kinds of unified lower and upper secondary school.
Schools Offering Various Learning Actiivities in a Comfortable Atmosphere Which subjects are established at unified lower and upper secondary schools and which special char-acteristics educational content will have depends on the decision of prefectures and municipalities.Developing six years of planned and continuous education guidance in a flexible school lifestyle, while increasing student individuality and creativity should be the objective upon which unified lower and upper secondary schools are founded. For example, such schools as these could be envisaged:

Q39: For a variety of reasons,I dropped out of upper secondary school, but I would like to study history, which I have been interested in since I was a child,at university. Are there any ways to go to university despite not graduating from upper secondary school?
A:If you pass th.e University Entrance Qualifi-cation Test(Daiken),you can earn the entryqualifications to go to university. The Daiken is a national examination that certi-fies whether or not people without the qualifica-tions to go to university because they did not graduate from upper secondary school have the same academic ability as upper secondary school graduates.Successful candidates are tho-se who pass all the required subjects. In the event that such a person is under18years old, they will be declared successful on their18 th It has become easier to sit for the Daiken In the past, people who had passed the Practical English Proficiency Test or the Practical Book-keeping Proficiency Test were exempted from sitting in those subjects.Since April1999,those who have passed the Practical Mathematics Proficiency Test and the Practical Word Processing Proficiency Test are eligible for exemptions. We are moving forward with expanding the scope of eligibility for exemptions. In addition,we will also increase the range of exemptions for subjects studied at upper secon-dary school and colleges of technology. Increase in those eligible to sit for the Daiken From the Daiken to be held in August2000(university entrance in April2001),it will be possi-ble for people who did not graduate from lower secondary school to take the Daiken examina-tion as long as they are16years or older. This will open up a way for proceeding to higher education for a wider range of people,in-cluding those who have previously been barred from taking the examination, such as graduates of international schools and schools for foreigners and people who did not graduate from lower secondary school for whatever reason.
