WHAT IS SEPAK TAKRAW ?
JAPANESE ENGLISH WARNING This page is being translated from Japanese by using the translation software. Approve it though it thinks that there is an a little funny expression. Do you know Sepak Takraw?
Background and History
Sepal Takraw was created by the royal family of Malaysia about 500 years ago. The name itself comes from two languages. Sepak is "kick" in Malay, and Takraw is the "ball" in Thai. When it is born, It looked like Japanese "Kemari", and some became a circle, and a pole was kicked, and the number of times was being competed in.
It looks very similar to the Japanese traditional game, "kemari" where the players form a loose circle and the number of times the ball is kicked before it touches the ground is counted. In 1965 the game was unified into the present volleyball style with the addition of a net and the adoption of international rules.
Game
The court and the net height and size are identical to those used in badminton and each team has three players. The rules are very similar to those in volleyball , with the following five important exceptions
  • The use of hands is not permitted.

A call for sepak takraw to be included in the Olympics.
http://www.subway.com/subpages/extreme/sepak/
Don't you think the summer Olympics are getting a little boring? I mean, think about what some of these sports entail. People in shorts running around in circles? Shooting arrows into a bundle of hay? Running fast and then jumping into a sand box? What's next, bingo marathons? Let's face it folks, we need a change of pace. We need something crazy. We need Sepak Takraw,
our new favorite sport.
Sepak Takraw originated in Southeast Asia. It's volleyball, gymnastics and soccer all rolled into one. There are three players on each team and it's played on a court like the ones used for badminton. The rules are about the same as volleyball with two minor changes: The ball they use is a hard plastic sphere and the players can't touch it with their hands or arms. Due to the unique rules, this sport was heavily dominated by taller players who could lift their leg above the net to make a shot. But then a 5'2" Sepakker from Indonesia, Pakke "The Superball" Jursi , developed a move that completely changed the sport. He invented
the 360 degree

Sepak Takraw
The sepak takraw court and net are of the same standards as for badminton matches. A team consisting of 3 members is called Regu. Two teams compete for higher scores by spiking a ball into the opponents court. The same rules apply as for volley ball, with the following 4 exeptions:
  • players are prohibited from using their hands;
  • a player can touch the ball 3 successive times;
  • the players position of the defensive team is not rotated;
  • net-in service is accepted. Ball woven of rattan stems or made of plastic can be used. A match is composed of 3 sets. The team scoring 15 points win a set. The first team winning two sets wins the match. If both teams are tied, 13 to 13, the first team to score 13 points may choose to decide the set through 5-point match. If the teams are tied at 14 to 14, the first team to score 14 points may choose to decide the set through a 3-point match. Game Schedule

    Personal thoughts on the game, some photographs, and a summary of the rules.

    "...soccer, volleyball and gymnastics played in one."
       I love sport. I love to watch track and field, boxing, and swimming. I play Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, and Gymnastic but sometimes it's boring. What about playing gymnastic, volleyball, and soccer played in one, cool isn't it? You can play it all by playing Sepak takraw. I played it well during my high school.
    Sepak takraw is originated and a popular ballgame in South East Asia. It is one of the sports has medal at stake on South East Asian Games and Asian Games. A very interesting game and you can see a lot of gymnastics exhibitions more than what Michael Jordan do on the hoops. Takraw ball is made of rattan or very hard plastic weighed approximately 250 grams. Ruling and point system is almost similar to volleyball. You can use head, body, legs and anywhere for volleying and smashing the ball except that the player can't touch with his hand. Facility is not expensive, so you can start right now.
    Photos of smashing and blocking. Cool, isn't it? Some players used their head to block the ball and I experienced hitting to the head. Also you can invent how to smash the ball like runs up to the net, jump, float in the air, flip upside down while spinning like a helicopter, kick the ball more or less 60 miles per hour. Warning! don't do this while you are still new. Point sytem and ruling.

    SEPAK TAKRAW EQUIPMENT TERMINOLOGY OFFICIAL RULES HOW TO PLAY Come and Join Us Friday (2 - 5 p.m) and Sunday (1 - 2:30 p.m) Gym B, Women Building Maintainer Sepak Takraw Association HOW TO PLAY One of the features of Sepaktakraw, and reason for its growing popularity, is its simplicity. It is a team game involving three players per side and the object is to volley the woven ball over the net into the opponents court using any part of the body except the hands or arms. Each team is allowed three contacts with the ball to get it over the net. Unlike the similar game concept of volleyball, in takraw on player may take more than one contact consecutively.Points are scored by the serving team, and points are gained if the opposing side fails to return the ball over the net, or a winning shot is played whereby the ball lands in the opponents court. The length of the game varies - there is no time limit. Matches are won by winning 2 out of 3 sets. To win a set, one team must reach 15 points. In 1996, ISTAF changed the rule so that no extra margin or extra points are played - the set is played straight and the first team to reach 15 points wins the set. The third set, if necessary is played to only 6 points and is referred to as a "tie-breaker". Regu (single team)
    A Regu consists of 4 players, but only three may be on the court at one time. Each "Regu" must have an appointed captain.

    11. SEPAK TAKRAW
    sepak takraw (Kick Volleyball). sepak takraw (Kick Volleyball), or Takraw forshort, is one of the fastest growing and most popular sports in Asia.
    http://www.asecint.org/takraw/taksum.html
    SEPAK TAKRAW (Kick Volleyball) Through the ‘96/’97 to ‘98/’99 school years Sepaktakraw has been "introduced" to over 60 Saskatchewan schools by ASEC International, which is now Saskatchewan’s official Active Member organization to STAC. Students from about grade 6 or 7 and up have no problem catching on to the sport - and once they try it, they are usually crazy about it! One teacher commented, "All they want to do now is play Takraw, in Phys. Ed., at noon for intramurals and after school! They’re hooked!" We anticipate most provinces in Canada having an active Takraw Association under umbrella of STAC within 6 years. ASEC International, working with STAC, hosted the first annual, national Sepaktakraw Championships, right here in Regina, with the winning team being eligible to participate in the King’s Cup (World Championships) hosted in Thailand. Rational for Takraw: Takraw Instructional Clinics: Takraw clinics that we teach may be a short 1-hour INTRODUCTION session during an Asia presentation, or it may be its own half or full day clinic that really focuses on learning the skills necessary to play the game.

    The tourists walking around Bangkok’s Lumpini Park late one afternoon stumbled upon a scene that fascinated them. In one corner of the park were a group of six young men playing a game that looked a bit like volleyball. They were using a net and knocking around a small wicker ball that was roughly the size of a guava. Incredibly, they weren’t using their hands, only their feet, knees and head. And they performed these incredible gymnastic leg kicks to propel the ball over the net. It looked like a 360-degree cartwheel! The tourists were mesmerized. Just what was this sport that looked like a combination of volleyball, badminton, soccer and gymnastics?
    In Thailand it is called takraw, but the official name of this internationally recognized game is sepak takraw. Without a doubt it is one of the world’s most exciting sports, both to play and to watch, yet it is relatively unknown outside of Southeast Asia. Playing the sport requires little in the way of equipment or preparation but it does require quick reflexes, coordination, agility and, above all, technique. Thick skin is also helpful; a skillfully kicked takraw ball can travel at speeds of over 60mph (97kph)!
