3rd Degree Black Belt
2nd Degree Black Belt
In the summer of 1978, at the academic grounds at the University of Texas at Austin, I registered for the martial arts class Kung Fu/Shaolin Style and was taught by Sifu John Wang, originally from China. I quickly learned that this was an art and a philosophy that I wanted to learn and respect.
I was intrigued not only by the kicks and punches but also thenames of the stances that were based upon creatures like the Tiger, Horse, White Crane, Snake, Cat and the legendary Dragon. In addition, the cultural poetry gave me an imigery that was used to describe the fluid (kata) movements in helping pass the knowledge from one generation to another.
Those three years with Sifu, I did not have any belt rankings in his class, nor was I concerned with any particular level of ranking. My goal was to be proficient in the art. He invited many prominent Chinese instructors from different styles in Praying Mantis, Tai Chi, Hsing-I and Pa Kua. You realize to handle everyday strife or a sudden confrontation with greater confidence.
Our Sifu brought us to a crossraod in June of 1981. We would pursue a specific style of Chinese Kung Fu - Shuai Chiao.

About Shuai-Chiao
Fighting is a part of human nature, and naturally humans as thinking animals have developed highly sophisticated techniques to compensate for innate differences such as strength and size. Shuai-chiao, like wrestling styles popular in other cultures, evolved from the crude fighting tactics of our ancestors into a very advanced form of martial art. Shuai-chiao differs from most other wrestling styles in that its techniques are considerably more sophisticated and devastating, emphasizing the use of technique rather than raw power. Unlike other kung fu styles that have difficulty in formal competition because rules have not been developed to prevent injury, shuai-chiao has adapted to the modern world; rules are applied today that lessen the chance for injury during competition without compromising the integrity of the art. Styles of Shuai-Chiao There are many styles of shuai-chiao, but the most prominent are Tientsin, Peking, and BaoDin.

What is Shuai-chiao?
Modern Shuai-chiao (competing to throw) is the culmination of the ancient, crude, practical and effective combat grappling method of the battlefield - that has evolved into a sophisticated and efficient no non-sense approach to combat.
Its training method of using punches, kicks and joint-locks in the context of throwing can conform to all martial arts styles. Its philosophy share the same principle of Tai-chi Yin and Yang, the traditional cosmic law of China. In fact, the advanced Shuai-chiao practitioner views Shuai-chiao and Tai-chi as two sides of the same coin meeting at a junction, but coming from totally different origin. Shuai-chiao's techniques are the culmination of tested grappling experience in the best environment - the battlefield. Today, it is still a part of military and police training as well as a national sport in China and Taiwan.
Origin and development of Shuai-chiao
Shuai-chiao's earliest recorded use was by the Yellow Emperor of China, 2697 B.C. against the rebel enemy Chih-yiu and his army. They used horned helmets and gored their opponents while using a primitive form of grappling. This early recorded period was first called Chiao-ti (butting with horns). Throughout the centuries, the hands and arms replaced the horns while the techniques increased and improved. The name Chiao-ti also changed and was referred to by many names popular at that time in history or by government decree.

S ome 1500 years ago in the Hunan province of China, Shao-lin monks wanted to live in isolation, pursuing the peaceful teachings of Buddha. In order to protect their freedom in a land filled with violence, they developed a powerful system of self-preservation. This system was based on the avoidance of conflict and the cultivation of mind, body, and spirit.

The Real Ch'ang Tung Shen

Ch'ang Shih Tai Chi Ch'uan: The Book

C h'ang's family had a long established tradition of martial arts training. At the age of 12 he began his own training with the highly respected shuai-chiao instructor, Ch'ang Fen Yen, who was the leading disciple of Pin Jin Yi. Ch'ang became the number-one disciple of his teacher, eventually marrying Ch'ang Fen Yen's daughter.
Ch'ang Fen Yen's teaching was traditional and demanding. With him his young student practiced diligently and seriously every day, beginning early a lifelong devotion to shuai-chiao. Some of Ch'ang Fen Yen's teaching methods were unusual, investing the tasks of everyday life with applications for shuai-chiao. For example Ch'ang Fen Yen would often ask his young disciple to bring water from the well near his home. This task involved turning a crank to bring up the rope that held a bucket filled with water, then pouring the water into a large container.

76. Shuai-Chiao History
shuaichiao, Chinese Wrestling chiao-Ti (now called shuai-chiao or throwing horns),had been an excellent exhibition art at festivals and carnivals.
http://www.shaolininstitute.com/shuai-chiao history.htm
Shuai-Chiao, Chinese Wrestling In the beginning of evolution, mankind was very animalistic. Survival only for the strong. Man had to survive hunger, natures elements, animal as well as human attacks. Self preservation became a way of life. Most people watched animals and tried to copy their survival techniques. Early man was very ritualistic, chanting and dancing around the campfire. Ritual and self defense combined in a dance, copying the moves of their ancient sacred animals. These movements eventually evolved into a style of self defense. In Chinese history, records of wrestling style can be traced back to 2697 BC. When it was used between the Emperor Hwang Ti and the rebel Chih Yu, who was known for his wrestling skills. In the era, the term Chiao-Ti (horn locking) was used because, during ritual or practice combatants wore a headdress adorned with horns. When they would grapple with each other, it looked like 2 animals locking horns. During the Chou dynasty (1122-255 BC), wrestling skills were a prerequisite for all military personnel. Ancient records tell of wrestling tournaments with thousands of competitors, going on for days. Chiao-Ti (now called Shuai-Chiao or throwing horns), had been an excellent exhibition art at festivals and carnivals. Feats of strength and skill would always please a crowd. However, Shuai-Chiao was not the only fighting style around. Bare knuckle fighting, weaponry, horsemanship and archery were also dominant ways of self defense at this time.

""How These Little-Known But Devastating Throws and Tactics from the Ancient Chinese Art of Shuai-chiao Can Turn Pathetic Stand-up Grapplers Into Unstoppable All-Around Butt Kickers" "
From: Matt O. Furey
Tuesday: 6:57 a.m.
Dear Friend,

It's the saddest sight in grappling today.
Countless numbers of able-bodied men whose only offensive maneuver from the feet is falling to their ass to use the guard.
These men, who are usually wearing gi's - are absolutely clueless about how to use their own clothing to either attack or defend. Whenever I see this I shake my head from side to side. What a complete and total waste of time, talent and energy. It is so friggin sad!
Especially when you consider something I learned from the legendary Dan Gable, an Olympic and world champion. Early on in my career Gable told me that...
Matt Furey on his way to winning the 1997 World Shuai-chiao Kung Fu Championships
"90% of all matches are won by the person who scores the first takedown."
How true this is!

79. Chinese Wrestling
In China, it is called shuaichiao and its history is believed togo back as far as 2000 BC. The same can be said of shuai-chiao.

Chinese Wrestling
by Matt Furey
The oldest style of kung fu is one of the 54 different styles of wrestling. In China, it is called shuai-chiao and its history is believed to go back as far as 2000 B.C. The two words, 'shuai' and 'chiao' literally mean 'throwing' and 'horns.' The throw part of it is easy to understand. What grappling art doesn't have throws? But horns? According to shuai-chiao legend, competitors used to wear helmets that were shaped to look like they had horns. And so, when the two opponents grappled, they resembled two animals locking horns. A Battlefield Art It is believed that more than 2000 years before the Ch'in dynasty (221 B.C.), Shuai-chiao, then known as Chiao-ti, was first used as a battlefield art. China was not unified as a country at the time, and the various tribes from throughout the land were constantly fighting. During the Chou dynasty, Chiao Ti was adopted as a fighting art by the government, and the military were trained in its methods. From the time of the Ch'in dynasty, Chiao Ti began to be used for more than military purposes. Tournament competition was introduced and skillful civilian practitioners often performed at shows, festivals and other gatherings. To this day performances are still a regular feature at banquets. The Chinese Word For Wrestling Gets Standardized Chinese wrestling, much like American wrestling, has gone through several name changes. It is only in wrestling history books that we hear our nation's sport called catch-as-catch-can or collar-and-elbow. The same can be said of Shuai-chiao.

Shaolin Kungfu
More than 1500 years ago, the Shaolin monks in China began studying martial arts as part of a lifelong journey towards enlightenment. Recognizing that body, mind and spirit are inseparable, they embarked on three pillars of training. This training included martial arts and qigong to strengthen the body, meditation to clear the mind, and spiritual inquiry to answer the deepest questions of the soul. At The Peaceful Dragon we adhere to the traditional "three pillar" approach, teaching authentic lineage kungfu styles. The journey is a demanding one requiring self-discipline and dedication, but the rewards are always worth the effort. Shaolin Kungfu Originating in the Shaolin Temple in China over 1500 years ago, Shaolin kungfu is perhaps the most comprehensive of all martial arts. Often referred to as the "grand daddy" of Asian martial arts, Shaolin has influenced the development of much later arts such as Japanese karate and Korean tae kwon do. Movements, techniques or principles in these later arts have almost all been thoroughly developed in Shaolin kungfu. Kungfu offers you great health and fitness, superb fighting skills, and it can be beautiful and exciting to watch, as in the movie "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon."
