Skeletons Beneath A Village*
Michael Pietrusewsky Swirling around the serious business of research were the social activities of a Thai village. Highlights included a local style wedding and the annual bong fai (fertility) festival of drunken rocketeers, men shooting huge rockets into the sky from rice fields. The "Splatt Theory": An artist's conception depicting ancient burials which are interred deep beneath a vibrant village. Illustration by Ardeth Anderson On the scholarly side, there was plenty of opportunity to discuss (often with Chet holding court) the day's work over an evening meal amongst the team members and with other visitors who found their way to "Ban Chiang University" that summer. The political climate of Southeast Asia in the early 1970's lent an extra dimension of nervous awareness. A window of opportunity allowed me to venture across the Mekong River to Vientiane in Laos, albeit on the wrong ferry which landed downstream from the customs office during a heavy downpour. By hailing a taxi and then pretending to enter at the correct location, I was able to elude the feared gendarmes. The ensuing trip to quaint Luang Prabang, a former capital of Laos with many temples, nestled among the mountains, was well worth the perils that preceded it.

The human skeleton consists of 206 bones. We are actually born with more bones (about 300), but many fuse together as a child grows up. These bones support your body and allow you to move. Bones contain a lot of calcium (an element found in milk, broccoli, and other foods). Bones manufacture blood cells and store important minerals.
The longest bone in our bodies is the femur (thigh bone). The smallest bone is the stirrup bone inside the ear . Each hand has 26 bones in it. Your nose and ears are not made of bone; they are made of cartilage, a flexible substance that is not as hard as bone.
Joints : Bones are connected to other bones at joints. There are many different types of joints, including: fixed joints (such as in the skull, which consists of many bones), hinged joints (such as in the fingers and toes), and ball-and-socket joints (such as the shoulders and hips).
Differences in males and females : Males and females have slightly different skeletons, including a different elbow angle. Males have slightly thicker and longer legs and arms; females have a wider pelvis and a larger space within the pelvis, through which babies travel when they are born.

The online skeleton is an introduction to the human skeleton in Adobe Acrobat pdf format. It started life as a section in a booklet on Forensic Anthropology which I produced for my students at the University of New England. The emphasis in this course was towards procedures which were of relevance to people working in Australia. This shows through in the examples and data used in the pdf document. The online skeleton is a 1.4 Mb file, with a large number of photographs. In order to keep the document at a manageable size the majority of these were scanned at only 72 dpi. Although the photographs are at a low resolution the document is designed to be printed rather than read on screen. Links within the pdf file are indicated by red text, for instance on the anterior and posterior illustrations of the human skeleton, or by thumbnail size pictures within the text. You are free to use this document as long as it is not for commercial gain and acknowledge where you obtained it from. The contents and emphasis of the online skeleton were strongly influenced by the following two books Warwick, R. and Williams, P. 1973.

SKELETON COAST
by John H Marsh
THIS is a re-issue, up-dated and much more fully illustrated, of the book first published in 1944 that released the hitherto top secret story of what is surely the most dramatic and inspiring shipwreck and rescue drama of all time.
The story is true in every particular, incredulous as many a reader is likely to find the amazing series of events related. There were some who labelled it "the wildest fiction" when first they read it. But it has stood the test of time. The incident that led to the participation in the drama of the Merchant Marines of several countries, the British and South African Navies, the South African Air Force, the South African Army, the South African Police and the South African Railways and Harbours Administration, demanding from each of the men their utmost resources of courage, endurance, persistence, ingenuity, compassion and humanity, as well as intelligence and muscle, took place midway through World War 2 off the coast of South West Africa that is scheduled soon to become the independent country of Namibia.
That particular part of the S.W.A./Namibia coast has been for centuries for all who knew it the most frightening piece of the Earth.

Aardvark skeleton
Aardvark, Orycteropus afer Order Tubulidentata, Family Orycteropodidae Aardvarks are pig-sized animals that specialise in ant-eating especially termites. The skeleton is characteristic of a powerful scratch digger i.e. an animal that is able to exert force on soil or clay in order to dislodge it for digging, burrowing or feeding purposes. Typically the limbs are short and armed with powerful claws. The animal is able to secure its position with the tripod arrangement of its hindlimbs with plantigrade stance and a thick tail acting as a brace. Click on the skeleton above for more information on skeletal parts or click on the words below: Skull forelimb hindlimb , pectoral girdle, pelvic girdle, caudal region Specimen length from nose tip to tail = 1.21 metres, height (up to top of lumbar vertebrae) = 0.4m.
