Blue Ridge County's recount of the hanging of Mary the elephant, who was hung by railroad crane in Erwin, Tennessee in 1916.

Mary the Elephant. The town considered guns, electrocution and dismemberment before setting on hanging. There's A Skeleton In A Trainyard In East Tennessee

BY JOAN VANNORSDALL SCHROEDER It was 1916, and things were changing fast. World War I raged in Europe. Dadaism, ripe with comic derision and irrationality, took hold in artistic circles. Freeform jazz took hold of the American music scene. Margaret Sanger opened the first birth-control clinic. It was a good year for scapegoats. It was a good year to hang an elephant.
The Place
Erwin, Tennessee seems to be a polite and patriotic town, where campaign signs ask voters to "Please Elect...," then thank them in advance. It's a place where many of the Main Street businesses mark the Fourth of July by closing down for four days, and nobody seems to mind the inconvenience. In 1916, Erwin was a railroad boom town, home to the Cincinnati, Clinchfield, and Ohio Railroad's repair facilities, "sprouting like a boy growing too fast for his own britches," according to longtime resident Hank S. Johnson. The population of Erwin (which was supposed to be called Ervin, in honor of the man who donated 15 acres of land for the town, but was misspelled by a postal worker) nearly tripled in the first 16 years of the century. Makeshift boardwalks stretched above the ankle-deep yellow mud in the streets.

Jesse Jackson John McCain is a maverick senator and former Vietnam veteran and prisoner of war for 5 years in North Vietnam. On the positive side, he is a rare exception to the partisan bitterness in Washington these days, often crafting bipartisan approaches to issues such as smoking and campaign reform. Here are some negative allegations: - McCain was one of the "Keating Five," congressmen investigated on ethics charges for strenuously helping convicted racketeer Charles Keating after he gave them large campaign contributions and vacation trips. Though he was not convicted of anything, McCain intervened on behalf of Charles Keating after Keating gave McCain at least $112,00 in contributions. In the mid-1980s, McCain made at least 9 trips on Keating's airplanes, and 3 of those were to Keating's luxurious retreat in the Bahamas. McCain's wife and father-in-law also were the largest investors (at $350,000) in a Keating shopping center; the Phoenix New Times called it a "sweetheart deal."

Fossilized baby skeletons found in South Africa
Portions of a baby's fossilized skull were found
December 16, 1997
Web posted at: 8:38 p.m. EST (0138 GMT) PARIS (CNN) Archeologists in Paris exhibited the remains Tuesday of what they say are the youngest fossilized babies ever found. The bones were found by a team of French and South African scientists working at a South African site near Drimolen, 30 miles from Pretoria The remains, thought to be around 2 million years old, were displayed at the Natural History Museum in Paris. The museum and the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg co-sponsored the dig that uncovered the remains. The two babies are the youngest known representative of their species, the flat-faced ape man, and are the precursors to modern man. Researchers believe the babies were from two separate, but related, hominid species which may have co-existed without competing for food.
'The potential is enormous'
Frontal bones outlining tiny eye sockets suggest that one baby's skull was about the size of a small grapefruit. The size allows scientists to calculate the size of the infant's brain and the extent of its development, thus providing clues to primitive man's early childhood development. Gommery, Keyser, Braga

Skeleton could be 'Che' Guevara's bones
July 8, 1997
Web posted at: 9:08 p.m. EDT (0108 GMT) SANTA CRUZ, Bolivia (CNN) Scientists are working to identify a set of skeletal remains that they believe are those of Ernesto "Che" Guevara, the legendary guerrilla leader who was executed in Bolivia 30 years ago. The skeleton was found in a mass grave with the bones of seven others, apparently Guevara's fellow guerrillas. Bolivian troops executed Guevara in October 1967 and buried his remains in a secret location. New evidence led scientists to a mountain village where the bones were excavated on Sunday.

Centuries-old skeleton found in ship on land
November 7, 1996
Web posted at: 11:25 p.m. EST CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (CNN) More than 300 years ago, a ship belonging to the French explorer La Salle sank during a violent storm off what is now the coast of Texas. This fall, on land, researchers were introduced to a nearly intact skeleton who may have been a member of the crew. (1.1MB/28 sec. QuickTime movie of the dig The wreck of the La Belle was found a year ago by a research team in 14 feet (4 meters) of water near the small town of Palacios.
In a rare archeological drama, they began excavating the site in September after a dam was built around the wreck and the Matagorda Bay waters were pumped out. Among their dry-land discoveries was the skeleton, who may have been someone who died of thirst during the voyage. (306K/28 sec. AIFF or WAV sound) Barto Arnold, project director
The skeleton is not believed to be that of La Salle, also known as Rene-Robert Cavelier. He was murdered by mutinous members of his expedition in 1687, a year after the Belle sank while it was anchored in the bay. La Salle had led an expedition there, thinking it was the mouth of the Mississippi River. He was away on land exploring when the ship went down.
Well-preserved treasures
The ship and its contents are well preserved because they sank quickly into the seabed, where the sand and mud kept out the corrosive effects of oxygen. The La Belle is believed to have been one of the first ships to visit that coast.

Investigators testing skeleton found on Raul Salinas' ranch
October 10, 1996
Web posted at: 10:00 p.m. EDT MEXICO CITY (CNN) Mexican investigators Thursday began tests on a skull and bones dug up Wednesday on the ranch of Raul Salinas, the brother of Mexico's former president Carlos Salinas de Gortari. Raul Salinas is already in prison and awaiting trial for the assassination of a senior Mexican politician, Jose Francisco Ruiz Massieu, who was shot outside his hotel two years ago. The remains are believed to be those of Manuel Munoz Rocha, the man authorities believe helped Salinas plot Ruiz Massieu's murder two years ago. Munoz Rocha disappeared shortly afterwards. "Through information we obtained, we were able to locate precisely the place where Mr. Munoz Rocha was allegedly buried," said Mexican Attorney General Antonio Lozano. Mexican authorities are trying to determine whether the human remains found on his property are those of Munoz Rocha, and whether they implicate Salinas in the murder. Salinas has been in jail since February 1995, but up to now, detectives had found no hard leads to tie him to the Massieu assassination. The dearth of evidence until now has prompted Salinas' defense attorney to cry foul.

AL JIZAH, EGYPT—A team of British and Egyptian archaeologists made a stunning discovery Monday, unearthing several intact specimens of "skeleton people"—skinless, organless humans who populated the Nile delta region an estimated 6,000 years ago. Above: An archaeologist examines the intact remains of a spooky "skeleton person." "This is an incredible find," said Dr. Christian Hutchins, Oxford University archaeologist and head of the dig team. "Imagine: At one time, this entire area was filled with spooky, bony, walking skeletons." "The implications are staggering," Hutchins continued. "We now know that the skeletons we see in horror films and on Halloween are not mere products of the imagination, but actually lived on Earth." Standing at the excavation site, a 20-by-20-foot square pit along the Nile River, Hutchins noted key elements of the find. "The skeletons lived in this mud-brick structure, which, based on what we know of these people, was probably haunted," he said. "Although we found crude cooking utensils in the area, as well as evidence of crafts like pottery and weaving, we are inclined to believe that the skeletons' chief activity was jumping out at nearby humans and scaring them. And though we know little of their language and means of communication, it is likely that they said 'boogedy-boogedy' a lot." Approximately 200 yards west of the excavation site, the archaeologists also found evidence of farming.
