SKELETON SLEDDING INFORMATION
Introduction:
like to check and see if people are waiting to ambush them out in the woods. I look back on those days a lot and really do miss working security at the concerts. (All told I did it for about seven years, although they weren't sequential.) Anyway, one of my co-workers was wearing an Empire State Games sweatshirt one evening. For those of you who aren't local, the Empire State Games are our New York States sports championships. They're held annually in both winter and summer in a wide variety of events. Since there are millions of people in our state, and these are the championships, you've got to be good to get in for almost anything. (Well, usually. There are exceptions and I'm the proof. But I'm coming to that story later.) So this meant he was good in his sport. More importantly, to me, his sweatshirt said "Bobsledding." "Wow!" I cried, "I've always wanted to try Bobsledding or Luging!! How do you do that?!" And he told me... Of course, he also told me about something called "skeleton" that I'd never heard of. The next winter I was an Empire State Games skeleton slider. I wish I could have continued with it, but a conspiracy of geography and insurance-less poverty kept me out of the sport until a return in 1998. Nevertheless, skeleton sliding was one of the greatest experiences of my life.

Filming of "Skeletons in the Closet" under way at Valley locations
Clapp, Cranage appear in Powers' film
The last time Emmy Award-winning actor Gordon Clapp of "NYPD Blue" fame made a film in his native Mt. Washington Valley, he was a struggling actor. That was in 1977, when Clapp appeared with fellow Mt. Washington Valley Theatre Company cast members in the locally shot John Sayles written and directed (and much critically acclaimed) film, "The Return of the Secaucus 7," was released in 1980. Back then, Clapp - who received an Emmy in 1998 for his portrayal of Det. Greg Medavoy for "NYPD Blue" and who also recently appeared in the film, "Rules of Engagement" - received $80 a week, plus room and meals (provided that he worked). Sayles spent $40,000 for his film in 1977. Flash forward 23 years, and the North Conway-bred Clapp will soon be back, appearing in the thriller film, "Skeletons in the Closet," a similarly "low budget" film now being shot here in the Valley over the next few weeks by 1979 Kennett High grad-turned-director Wayne Powers and his wife, Donna. [Image of Gordon Clapp]
Former Mt. Washington Valley resident Gordon Clapp (above) of ABC-TV's "NYPD Blue" and former Valley resident Anna Cranage will be among the performers in "Skeletons in the Closet," a film being shot on location in Mt. Washington Valley over the next few weeks. The film is directed by 1979 Kennett High graduate Wayne Powers, who co-wrote the film "Deep Blue Sea" with his wife, Donna, last summer. Anyone interested in serving as an extra in the film is encouraged to call 383-8926.

Build your own Animatronic Skeleton by Chuck Rice Have you ever wanted to build your own Animatronic? This project details how I built an animantronic using a common (around Halloween) skeleton, Hobbie Servos and and a Servo Controller Chip from FerretTronics This is the Skeleton that I started with. I got it at Spencer Gifts last October for $25. From a stamp on the back shoulder blade, it appears that it was made by a company called "The Paper Magic Group" and has a date of 1998. It was made in China and is about three feet tall. I removed the top of the skull by gently prying it apart along the glue seam with an exacto knife. The wire you see sticking up out of the skull is for the LEDs I added to his eyes. To see a larger version, click on the picture. The tools I used included a battery powered hand drill and various bits. A Dremel Tool and cutoff bits, wire cutters, pliers, and screwdrivers, exacto knife, and a soldering iron. All parts except the skeleton, gears, and electronics can be purchased at the hardware store and hobby shop. The Skeleton is made of a very brittle plastic and breaks easily, but can also be easily repaired with a little

His father worked for fifty years at a glass factory, and his mother left school at fourteen to work in a laundry; neither attended school beyond the eighth grade. While in high school in 1943 Wright suffered a nervous breakdown and missed a year of school. When he graduated in 1946, a year late, he joined the army and was stationed in Japan during the American occupation. He then attended Kenyon College on the G.I. Bill, and studied under John Crowe Ransom . He graduated cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1952, then married another Martins Ferry native, Liberty Kardules. The two traveled to Austria, where, on a Fulbright Fellowship, Wright studied the works of Theodor Storm and Georg Trakl at the University of Vienna. He returned to the U.S. and earned master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Washington, studying with Theodore Roethke and Stanley Kunitz . He went on to teach at The University of Minnesota, Macalester College, and New York City's Hunter College.

The Mammalian skeleton. This is what we call a skeleton. The basic plan ofthe mammalian skeleton, as seen above, is fairly straight forward.
http://www.earthlife.net/mammals/skeleton.html
The Mammalian Skeleton
Mammals are vertebrates by definition, this means that all mammals have an internal bony support structure to which muscles and ligaments are attached. This is what we call a skeleton. The basic plan of the mammalian skeleton, as seen above, is fairly straight forward. It consists of a head at one end of a vertebral column from which extend ribs to support the working organs and four limbs for locomotion. The vertebral column ends in a tail. The huge range of lifestyles and habitats utilised by mammals means that a great deal of variety exists between different groups. Some species lack a tail, others lack apparent hind limbs and the skull is very variable. Here I am going to give you a general outline of the mammalian skeleton with some notes to indicate particular variations. To understand the skeleton fully you should also have a look at the page on Bones and Joints
The Skull
The vertebrate skull in general and the mammal skull in particular is a complex amalgam of bones, not just one or two but about 34 bones, if they all are present, make up the skull and lower jaw. Most of these bones are now fused together though anyone who has looked carefully at a mammal skull will have notices the crinkly lines where the once individual bones meet. Most of them come in pairs, one each side. The skull can be divided into 3 basic parts; the Braincase (enclosing the brain); the Rostrum (the snout and upper jaw); the Lower Jaw.

what is Old Halloween? "There   is perhaps no night in the year which the popular imagination has stamped with a more peculiar character than the evening of the 31st of October, known as All Hallow's Eve, or Halloween. It is clearly a relic of pagan times, for there is nothing of the church-observance of the ensuing day of All Saints to have originated such extraordinary notions as are connected with this celebrated festival, or such remarkable practices as those by which it is distinguished.
The leading idea respecting Halloween is that it is the time, above all others, when supernatural influences prevail. It is the night set apart for a universal walking abroad of spirits, both of the visible and invisible world; for, as will be afterwards seen, one of the special characteristics attributed to this mystic evening, is the faculty conferred on the immaterial principle in humanity to detach itself from its corporeal tenement and wander abroad through the realms of space. Divination is then believed to attain its highest power, and the gift of calling spirits 'from  the vasty deep', becomes available to all who choose to avail themselves of the privileges of the occasion."
from "Chambers' Book of Days", 1864
