Soon they howl with delight, noticing you have your ski boots on. “Time to go play Boys” Howling songs of excitement fill the air. We’re going Ski Joring! If you have ever donned a pair of Cross Country (Also called Nordic) ski’s, you realize the beautiful and serenity of gliding through the woods and fields. If you have ever taken your dog (or dogs) with you Nordic skiing, you quickly realize they love playing in the snow just as much as we humans. If you have ever grunted up a steep hill, watching you dog run effortlessly ahead, you may have thought “If the dogs could just help me up those darn hills, we would both have even more fun”, you were born to be a Ski-jorer. Skijoring involves the teaming of human and canine to travel over the snow. Ancient cave drawings in Europe show men hunting and traveling with “Sticks” on their feet. Traveling over snow with the assistance of skis as we call them, is about as old as mans need to travel over the snow. Similar cave drawings in Norway show an improvement to this mode of transportation. The same hunting figure with sticks on the feet are shown, with a clever addition. ews from Jackson Hole Cowboys Go Big at the "BIG ONE" During the Cowboy Ski Challenge Jackson Hole (Jackson Hole, Wyoming, February 6, 2001) The 10th Annual Cowboy Ski Challenge will take place on Saturday, February 10 and Sunday, February 11 at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. The Jackson Hole Cowboy Ski Challenge is part of the North American Ski Joring Association (NASJA) racing circuit. Jackson Hole is the second of seven stops on the circuit, with the final Ski Joring competition culminating in Red Lodge, MT. Registration for the Cowboy Ski Challenge is from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Virginian Lodge. The Ski Joring Competition begins each day at 11:00 am in the Haymeadow arena, adjacent to the Ranch Lot in Teton Village. Competitors will try for the fastest time through a course of jumps, gates and rings, reaching speeds of up to 50 mph while being pulled behind a horse.

They insist on making a further statement in the company of like-minded people, by jumping in between the ice floes. Ski-joring puts first-timer on fast track By Sherry Simpson Recently I tried a new winter sport becoming popular with sado- masochists and their pets everywhere: ski-joring. Well, in my case, it was more like ski-jarring. This is a sport thought up by people who own dogs that do what they say. I don't own any dogs like that, so my first introduction to the sport was at the invitation of my friend Kate, who said I could use a dog that understood English. Skijor-ing, for those of you who consider watching football a winter sport, is like cross-country skiing, only a lot more dangerous. You wear skies and the dog pulls you, which seems like a good idea until you realize you are tied to the dog in such a way that you cannot avoid any obstacles you may encounter: trees, moving trains and whatnot. It's kind of like marriage. "This will be really, really fun," Kate promised. "Last time I went with someone who had never skijored before, I took my camera so I could snap pictures of her falling down. I got some really good ones. " My husband, who would be skiing in our wake under his own power, said cheerfully, "I can't wait to see THIS."

The second annual Nome - White Mountain 140 skijor race is tentatively set for April 19, 2003 . Race will start at 9 am at Farley's Camp with a mass start. Last year's weather was near perfect. Temperatures ranged from 30 degrees F as a high to 15 degrees F in the evenings. The wind was calm even through Topkok. Several inches of new snow fell between Topkok and White Mountian. Trail conditions were good for the most part- hard packed snow with some drifted areas. Overflow was a problem and did create one scratch ( I went for a swim). Race is held this late in the year to allow for longer days and less wind. Rules - in keeping with the Kennel Club's posted Nome-White Mtn. 140 race rules the skijor division will have the following changes: 1. ?nd Annual Nome - White Mountain 140 Skijor Race is set for Thursday, April 19, 2003.
