http://virtual.finland.fi/finfo/english/skiing.html
Written for Virtual Finland by Joe Brady T he Finns used to say of themselves that they were born on skis, and the world outside believed them. They would not make the same claim so lightly now, as the ski has changed from being an everyday utility, a means of transport in rural areas, to its present status as an item of equipment for sports and leisure. That said, one should not forget the exception of the Finnish army, which still respects the ski as an effective aid to mobility and trains its soldiers to operate in snow. They did so to great effect in the Winter War of 1939-1940 against the Soviet Union and in the subsequent campaign against the same adversary between 1941 and 1944. © SA-kuva
Fire and movement. A couple of combatants lunge forward during a battle in Saija, Lapland on
21 February 1940. A few years ago, in his book Winter in Finland , professor W. R. Mead wrote: "Historically, skis are some of the oldest pieces of equipment found in the country." The ski has indeed been is use in Finland for thousands of years. Just as in Norway and Sweden, some of the oldest artefacts in Finland have been discovered in boglands. The peat bogs of Finland have yielded a variety of prehistoric skis in different parts of the country. Pollen dating of peat at one of the oldest sites, at Kinnula, in the southern province of Häme, gives an age of 4,000 years to the skis found there.

Welcome! The 2002-3 season has begun. The snow is falling and piling up (ever so slowly) here in the Northwest. At least we have enough base to ski, but it's a slow start. Feel free to submit new photos for our photo section to show off your turns and your artistry there. Tele videos are available on the backcountry skiing website- Dr. Telemark's Backcountry and Telemark Skiing Site The Online Study was terminated as of Sept 2002. Thanks to all for participating in the research into injuries among telemark skiers. I have reviewed the data from the 2 year survey on the website where I asked people to report the number of days skied and the injuries that may or may not have occurred. The problem that is quite evident in the reporting is that many people only reported the month that they were injured in, and a big chunk of the data set is not going to be useful.
I will see what data within the set looks like reliable injury and denominator (days of skiing injured or not) reporting, but its not very scientifically valid to scrub a data set that way. Basically, the attempt to do an online study, with hopes that people who signed up for it really read and understood the reporting requirements, was not successful.
My earlier data showed the trend that releaseables (then just the Voile's) were showing some protective benefit. However the margin is small enough that to show significance would require about 40,000 skier-days of data. Basically, we would need to sign up 2000 skiers to report their annual tele-skiing experience (since monthly reporting seemed too hard to do). That is a big study, it needs to be done, but where I can find 2000 teleskiers to sign up and reliably report is a challenge.
