    http://www.njsdc.com/history.html

    History:
Prior to the formation of sled dog racing as a formal sport, sled dogs were bred and used by native peoples of the polar regions of the world in their everyday lives for survival in harsh climates. Two dogs commonly employed in sledding are Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskies. These two breeds had quite different origins and uses. Alaskan Malamutes originated with a group of Eskimo people known as the Mahlemiut. The dogs of that time were very large freighting dogs, capable of pulling heavy weight. The Mahlemiut people inhabited the region in the upper part of the Anvik River in Alaska, and were spread out over a large area. The Mahlemiut people used these dogs for hauling food back to the villages. Also important in the background of sled dogs are the village dogs of Greenland. The gold rush in 1896 created a high demand for these dogs.
On the other hand, Siberian Huskies originated with the Chuckchi People of Northeastern Siberia. These people had a Stone Age culture and used their dogs for a variety of things, like herding reindeer and pulling loads. These dogs were smaller an faster than their Mahlemiut counterparts. These dogs were exported to Alaska at around the time of the gold rush. Thus the gold rush played a very important part in the development of out modern day sled dog breeds.
Sled dog racing began as a natural human competitive challenge, "My dogs are faster than your dogs." As a formal sport, sled dog racing appeared with the first All-Alaskan Sweepstakes race in 1908. Prior to this, Alaska's mushers had little opportunity for recreation and they used their teams primarily for work and transportation. Rules for the races were established, and they provided a good diversion to the difficult living conditions. In the 1920's, airplanes were gradually replacing sled dog teams for transportation, freight hauling, and mail delivery.

Corel photo In My Humble Opinion:
Dog Sled Racing vs. Sled Dog Racing by Mark Hamilton
I think I need to start out by stating I have no ax to grind with racing of any kind. Dog sleds, skijoring, cars, monster trucks, aircraft, human powered events like Iron Man competitions, marathons, what have you, I'm OK with all of it. I'm also going to state that the performance of the dogs from the sprint classes on through the Iditarod and Yukon Quest is so far beyond the performance of dogs from the early part of the twentieth century as to invite comparisons on the scale of the original Wright Flyer to the F-22 Raptor. These dogs are world class athletes, there is simply no other way to describe them.

Read these, they are the best info on the internet! Origin of the Alaskan Husky by Joe Runyan
The "Alaskan Husky" is a term so widely used by mushers and dog fanciers to describe a sled dog, that I presumed it would be an easy job to journalize the development and description of this unregistered breed of working dog. However, I soon discovered I was mistaken. Training Sled Dog Pups - An Annual Miracle by Joe Runyan Keeping Athletes at the Top of Their Game by David Draper
One only has to watch as mushers and dog handlers work to hitch up an experienced dog team at the start of the Iditarod to understand that the race means as much to the dogs as it does the racer. The uninitiated may be amazed at the raw power and excitement that each dog exhibits as the handler strains to get it in the harness.
