    History of
    Sled Dog
    Racing
S led dog racing has, in recent years, become a popular competitor and spectator sport. The heritage of the sled dog stretches back some 4000 years. The people of the far north were dependent on these animals for their protection, companionship, hunting, trapping and, most of all - transportation. Racing in the snow in Northumberland S led dogs enabled explorers such as Byrd, Peary and Amundsen to explore the frozen wasteland of two continents and played a vital role in bringing civilisation to the snowbound areas of the world. F ew of the inhabitants of the far North are dependent upon dogs for basic survival today. However, the same intimate relationship between man and dog still exists and is evidenced through the sport of sled dog racing. T here are four pure bred Sled Dog breeds, though only one, the Siberian Husky, is the breed likely to be seen at racing meetings. The Siberian breed was originally imported into Alaska for racing, and the sport soon became popular throughout North America, and very soon, Europe. The first huskies were imported into Britain in 1968 and the first rally was held in 1978.
R acing sled dogs are among the best-cared for animals in the world. The sport is one based on athletic performance and, therefore, diet and physical fitness is always of the utmost importance. Spectators may be surprised at the dogs' lean appearance, but it should be remembered that an overweight dog, like an overweight person, is not fit and cannot run at a competitive pace.

Sled Dog Racing April 2001 Due to the birth of our son in October 2000, 2001 is the first racing season for our progeny line bred on Anadyr based imports (see www.ssanadyr.com ). This is an exciting position for our kennel as we have had quality bloodlines for some years now and as individuals they have been part of many successful racing teams, but this is the first chance we get to perform together as a 'family'. We began rig and trail training in March with 4 to 8 dog teams. I was excited to have some new equipment for the dogs this year including some flash silver harnesses that I love (thanks) but I was certainly not high tech like some of my training mates with independent suspension and hub brakes and the like. Nevertheless the basic purple rig lives on and we hope not to be racing in the dark or have any brakes sticking this season!! We wanted to let the youngsters enjoy running behind trained dogs in runs of short duration without too much responsibility, so we started with Tserko and Sweep up front and Molinka and T-Dee at point, followed by interchanges of Spike, Solil (Lilly), Swoop, Sprite (Satu), Sting (Tujuh), Shino and Trump. The younger dogs were familiarised with harness work last season and took naturally to the process, so these early runs were interesting but any assessment as to team composition postponed as the training plan progresses.

ABSA - Affiliated British Sleddog Activites SLED DOG SPRINT RACING - TREKS - SOCIALS ABSA was founded in 1992 by a few established event organisers living in the South of England. Over the preceding years, they had become increasingly aware of the need for a specialist body to offer guidance in all aspects of the rapidly growing Sport of sleddog competition in Great Britain.
ABSA's aim, therefore, is to not only encourage and support events encompassing all the various sleddog activities and co-ordinating them into a workable calendar, but to also show the way to achieving quality organisational skills and progressing the Sport alongside other countries.
ABSA Membership is restricted to Event Organisers who are willing to give of their time to assist others and who continually strive to improve standards and promote the Sport in a co-operative manner. ABSA is now entering it's twelfth season, continuing to attract good support from mushers by averaging nearly 60 entries per event, with ten or so events each winter which span the south and middle of the UK. The 20 year old ABSA Affiliated Sled Dog Events' New Forest weekend event near Southampton is its centrepiece, attracting over 80 entries each year. Mushers are invited on a yearly basis to compete at the various events which include treks and socials. The ABSA structure allows the scheduling of several standard classes and variations of them, the event organisers free to choose classes that suit their preferences and their venues. All races have computer-assisted timing and provide result printouts for the mushers.

Since it is Iditarod time again, I thought it might be nice to relive those exciting days in 1994 when Malamutes ran the trail and proved that the breed could still do what it originally had been bred to do.
    MALAMUTES IN THE 1994 IDITAROD
Nancy Russell, owner of Storm Kloud Kennel in Sussex, Wisconsin, dreamed of having an Iditarod team ever since the race started in 1973. Nancy met musher Jamie Nelson of Togo, Minnesota, at a freight race in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, in 1987. Shortly after, she sent two dogs to Jamie to be trained as lead dogs. In 1989, Nancy took a litter of six puppies to Jamie to develop into a team for promotional purposes. Jamie was impressed with the working ability of the Malamutes and the idea of an Iditarod team became a real possibility. By the fall of 1993, Jamie had 20 Malamutes in training and finally decided to enter the race. Because of the lateness of this decision, it was not possible to obtain commercial sponsors, so money was raised through mile sponsorships, the Alaskan Malamute Club of America, and several all-breed dog clubs. The remainder was paid by Storm Kloud Kennel.
