This will be the official race sanctioned by the world-famous All-American Soap Box Derby of Akron, Ohio . The winners of this Los Angeles County race will be provided financial support to go to Akron to compete in the National Championships on July 27, 2002. Since 1934, the All-American Soap Box Derby has grown into a very popular sport. It affords families an opportunity to bond with their kids as they build and race their own cars. La Cañada’s Soap Box Derby is considered by All-American as a "licensed local" race. Any driver who wins his/her licensed All-American local race must represent the local in the All-American in July. Everything the youngster needs to build a competitive entry-level car is included in the package: steering and brake hardware, axles, a one-piece plastic body shell, a pre-cut floorboard and easy-to-follow illustrated assembly instructions. The objective of the STOCK division Soap Box Derby racer is to introduce Derby competition to families who have not previously participated. With adult supervision, a youngster should be able to assemble the STOCK racer within one day. World Championship finals are held each August at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio. There are three racing divisions which compete at the national All-American competition. The Stock division is designed to give the first time builder a learning experience. Boys and girls,ages 9 through 16, compete in simplified cars built from kits purchased from the All-American. The Super Stock division gives the competitor an opportunity to expand their knowledge and build a more advanced model. Both of these beginner levels make use of kits and shells available from the All American. The Masters division offers boys and girls, ages 11 through 16, an advanced class of racer in which to try their creativity and design skills. Master entrants can build a laydown or lean forward style car from scratch, or they may purchase a Masters Kit and Senior Speedster fiberglass body shell from the All-American as options. The Mid-Coast area is proud to keep the Soap Box Derby tradition alive for its communities youngsters.
