Soap Box Derby FAQ's
What is the Soap Box Derby?
The Soap Box Derby is a downhill race for cars which you build yourself. You and another competitor race side by side from the top of a hill to the finish line at the bottom. The first one across the finish line wins the race. If you win, you keep competing against the winners of other races. If you win all your races, you're the champion! But don't lose heart if you don't win your first race. You get more than one chance to race and work your way back to the top. Your first race will be at a local derby; in this case, the Tuscarawas County Soap Box Derby held each year in New Philadelphia. If you win the local race, you get to join champions from around the world in the All-American Soap Box Derby held in Akron each August.
What is the Tuscarawas County Soap Box Derby?
This is the local race in which boys and girls from our area begin Soap Box Derby competition. Our local race has been held in Tuscarawas County for over 50 years. It's the only derby qualifying race in eastern Ohio south of Canton. We welcome racers from Tuscarawas, Carroll, Harrison, Guernsey, Coshocton, and Jefferson counties. The Tuscarawas County Soap Box Derby is sponsored by

So you want to become involved in Soap Box Derby racing; you've come to the right place. Soap Box Derby is for youth aged 9-16. There are three classes in which to compete, with each class of car being slightly more difficult to build and prepare. Soap Box derby is sanctioned by the All-American Soap Box Derby , based in Akron, Ohio. Racine's program consists of the local race held in June and a spring and a fall rally. Race dates are determined in the fall. The local race is for racers that are members of the Racine Area Soap Box Derby Association only, but rallies are open to anyone who wants to race. The local race is qualifying for the national race held in Akron, Ohio during the first week of August. We run a double elimination with lane and wheel swaps at all races. For rallies, we require each racer to provide a worker to lift cars for one hour per day. We maintain online results from our races. Racine has held SBD races for over 25 years. It has always been our belief that the kids involved in our program should be taught the values of hard work and sportsmanship as a priority and winning as a secondary goal only. Proof of our success in this area is that our racers are friends first and competitors second - in fact many retired racers help run the races. Racine has been recognized as an "Outstanding Race City" by Akron in 1991 and 1997!

At the 65th annual Soap Box Derby, Evan Griffin, age 15, rolled to the Masters title in 28.26 seconds in his tiger-striped car. Roger Youmans Jr., 13, raced to a win in the Super Stock division in 28.57 and Anderson, Ind. native, Cameron Vannatta won with a time of 28.67 in a photo finish over Ashley Porter and Lavera Allen in the Stock division. The All-America Soap Box Derby is a coasting race for small gravity-powered cars built by their drivers and assembled within strict guidelines on size, weight and cost. The Derby was started by Dayton, Ohio newsman Myron Scott after he witnessed several boys racing handmade carts down a hill while on a photographic assignment in 1933. Scott decided to start an organized race for kids and the first All-American Soap Box Derby was held in Dayton in 1934. The race got its name because early on most cars were built from wooden soap boxes. The following year, the race was moved to Akron because of its central location and hilly terrain. In 1936, town leaders saw the need for a permanent site for the growing event and with the help of the Works Progress Administration, Derby Downs was constructed. One champion reigned at the All-American Soap Box Derby each year from 1934-75; Junior and Senior division champions from 1976-87; Kit and Masters champions from 1988-91; Stock, Kit and Masters champions from 1992-94; Stock, Super Stock and Masters champions starting in 1995.

From " Model Airplanes; Soap Box Derby; Porcelain Painting " Episode DWH-114
Becky Graham hopes eventually to race in Akron, Ohio, the birthplace and world capital of the All-American Soap Box Derby.
Becky Graham's entire family is involved in Soap Box Derby racing. Becky's father, Brian Graham, says the most satisfying aspect of the hobby is being able to both work with and spend time with his children. In derby cars, there is no engine; instead, racing is a combination of controlling the car while working with gravity. The cars some in three sizes: stock (for younger children); superstock (a midrange size); and the masters series. Although the cars and regulations have changed over the years, participants are still required to build their own cars; but, says Becky Graham, the most important thing to remember is to have fun and forget about opponents.

The Object at Hand
The Soap Box Derby, a peculiarly American institution, thrives on the U.S. teenage passion for anything that has four wheels and goes fast-even if driven by gravity.
Museum catalog item 318011.1 was built and raced in the finals at Akron in 1961 by Robert Pusateri. It was donated to the Smithsonian by his father. The official catalog description for item 318011.1 is simply "Car, soapbox." It is painted blue and carries on its side the name of its sponsor, the Hartford Times. Fair enough for a museum catalog. But to the boy who built it-now in his mid-40s-this item was not just a car but a racer and a means of transportation to one of young America's dreams of glory. This particular racer ran in the 1961 All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio. It was conceived early in the summer of 1960 by Robert Pusateri, then 11 years old. Robert had just lost a soapbox qualifier in Connecticut. His brother, Anthony, was about to race another car in Akron, but Robert was already deep into plans for 1961, the new "soapbox year." By Columbus Day, though the only power tool Robert used was an electric drill, his new car had axle trees and floorboards roughed in. By Easter 1961, Robert and others had spent hundreds and hundreds of hours gluing, clamping and, especially, sanding and polishing the body to cut down drag.

SuperTimer II for the Soap Box Derby - Introduction The Soap Box SuperTimer II WITHOUT the Race Manager Option times and announces each run in Soap Box Derby Racing. It operates completely without a computer and uses a single button to control the four timer states . Accessories including the Lane Sensors and Reflector as well as the necessary cables are provided with the basic SuperTimer II. When operating without the RaceManager Option, the announcement includes the winning lane and time differential to 0.1 milliseconds (00.0000 Seconds). The announcement will continue to repeat until the control button is pressed. If the button is pressed during an announcement, the announcement will continue until the end and then stop. Speakers, a 3 Watt amplifier and an output to your public address system are also provided. SuperTimer II also controls winning lane lights. It comes with a lane light driver for lights up to 300 Watts per lane (you provide the lights) and uses those lights to indicate a ‘red light’ condition on the course when SuperTimer II is not armed. An option switch allows you to set those lights to blinking (for 'spot' type lights) or steady (for rotating beacons.)
RaceManager Introduction The SuperTimer II Soap Box Derby RaceManager option controls SuperTimer II through a serial port interface. It provides virtually all the features of our previous DOS product including all the race management functions required for a single or double elimination race with or without Trial runs for up to six Soap Box Derby divisions. And, it includes several new features.
