Every year at Akron, Ohio, people tell me that his book was very instrumental in winning their local race and coming to Akron for the All-American World Championship. Both parents and drivers find this book easy to read and understand. Subjects in Winning Ingredients Winning Ingredients covers the following subjects to give you a head start on your competition: Aerodynamics, Energy, Weight, Suspension, Axles, Design and Construction, Alignment, Driver training, Practice, Testing, and Race day. Several experiments are given to show the driver and parent what forces are at work, while driving the winning car to the finish line. Book Contributors The following people are the main contributors to Winning Ingredients: Paul Abbott, Ted Ayers, Ollie Brower, Harry Fehrman, Pete Fehrman, Bruce Finwall, Larry Hatfield, Jerry Pearson, David Seitzinger, Bob Snoddy, Bill Waldrip, and Bo Waldrip. I am sure some knowledge rubbed off of all of the other people I came into contact with during my years in Soap Box Derby. Thanks to all of them, for their help along the way.

A Decade of World Derby Challenge
The 10th Season of World Derby Challenge marked a decade of high competition and stunning achievements in the derby world. All three divisions had new records set and dramatic outcomes. It all started with Brian Butler of Wooddale, IL. The derby world looked to Brian Butler to come blazing out of the ramp after been edged out for the Master's top spot in the closest finish in WDC history. However, by mid-season the only name to sit atop the thrown was Joe Tomasello. Brian had not even cracked the top 15 and questions mounted; did last year's defeat injure Brian? Was his derby career over? The derby world did not know what happened to the boy from Wooddale, IL. By March, a new name did appear in first, edging out Joe by a mere 20 points; but it was not Brian that climbed from fourth to first gaining 547 points in just 6 races. It was Dolline Vance. Brian had yet not been heard from and the derby world assumed Brian had retired after being edged from first last year.

How can I keep my soap box derby racer dry when it rains?
What is the Soap Box Derby: The Soap Box Derby is a youth racing program which has run nationally since 1934. World Championship finals are held each August at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio. The first All-American race was held in Dayton in 1934. The following year the race was moved to Akron because of its central location and hilly terrain. In 1936, Akron civic leaders recognized the need for a permanent track site for the youth racing classic and through the efforts of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), Derby Downs became a reality. Each year since, with the exception of the years during World War II, youngsters from throughout the United States and abroad have come to Akron with the racers they have built and driven to victory in their home communities. The goals of the Soap Box Derby program have not changed since it began in 1934. They are to teach youngsters some of the basic skills of workmanship, the spirit of competition and the perseverance to continue a project once it has begun. Click here to return to the top.

What is Soap Box Derby Racing?
Fun for the Whole Family! Origins Soap Box Derby began over 50 years ago when a newspaper reporter from Dayton, Ohio wrote a story about some kids racing down a hill in carts made from soap boxes and crates. A few years later, the newspaperman had organized the race into an event that is now a part of American tradition. Family Fun From building the car, to weekend racing, to competing for National Championships - soap box derby is definitely a family activity. The kids compete, the parents coach, and relatives cheer them all on. It's also a great way to meet super people from across the United States. Many families stay involved long after their racing days are over to talk with friends, tell old stories, or to assist a new family. Sportsmanship When asked, one of the most frequent benefits drivers aquire in derby is sportsmanship. Drivers often make friendships with their fellow competitors and treat them with respect if they win and wish them luck if they lose. Getting Involved Boys and girls ages 8-18 are generally eligible to compete in soap box derby races held all over the country.

There will be three racing divisions in most locals and at the All-American competition. The Stock division is designed to give the first-time builder a learning experience. Boys and girls, 9 through 16 compete in simplified cars built from kits purchased from the All- American. These kits assist the Derby novice by providing a step-by-step layout for construction of a basic lean forward style car. The Super Stock division gives the competitor an opportunity to expand their knowledge and build a more advanced model. Both of these beginner levels make use of kits and shells available from the All-American. These entry levels of racing are popular in race communities across the country, as youngsters are exposed to the Derby program for the first time.
