All-American Soap Box Derby
At the 65th annual Soap Box Derby, Evan Griffin, age 15, rolled to the Masters title in 28.26 seconds in his tiger-striped car. Roger Youmans Jr., 13, raced to a win in the Super Stock division in 28.57 and Anderson, Ind. native, Cameron Vannatta won with a time of 28.67 in a photo finish over Ashley Porter and Lavera Allen in the Stock division. The All-America Soap Box Derby is a coasting race for small gravity-powered cars built by their drivers and assembled within strict guidelines on size, weight and cost. The Derby was started by Dayton, Ohio newsman Myron Scott after he witnessed several boys racing handmade carts down a hill while on a photographic assignment in 1933. Scott decided to start an organized race for kids and the first All-American Soap Box Derby was held in Dayton in 1934. The race got its name because early on most cars were built from wooden soap boxes. The following year, the race was moved to Akron because of its central location and hilly terrain. In 1936, town leaders saw the need for a permanent site for the growing event and with the help of the Works Progress Administration, Derby Downs was constructed.

Celebrating 60 Years of Racing in New Hampshire
Updated: 3/19/2003
Welcome to the New Hampshire Soap Box Derby's Official Web Site! In our 60th year, the NHSBD is a youth racing event that is open to boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 17 that reside in the State of New Hampshire.
This is a unique program in that it encourages close parent-child activities while building and racing the car. The construction of the gravity race car reinforces the importance of setting and completing goals while developing traits such as self-confidence, perseverance and craftsmanship. Parents can learn new abilities while teaching children proper use of tools. The youth is encouraged to do as much of the work as their level permits.
The 60th Annual New Hampshire Soap Box Derby will be held on Sunday, June 22, 2003, in Dover, NH. The winners of each Division receive an all-expense paid trip to represent New Hampshire in the 66th All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio, the week of July 21 through July 26, 2003.
