Caring For Your Running Shoes
by Mike Wilensky, FR/FR Chicago It's entirely possible, in summer, to keep your running shoes clean, dry and odor-free. After running, remove the insoles and allow them to dry outside the shoes. Keep two pairs of shoes and alternate them. Finally, use "Cedar Socks," available at nominal costs from Road Runners Sports (800-551-5558); these cloth, cucumber-shaped inserts, stuffed with cedar chips, absorb moisture and odors from the outside in. Their life expectancy is about the same as a pair of shoes. However, if your you're like me, you sweat heavily and drench your shoes in sweat, sooner or later probably sooner your shoes will become pretty rank. This can be useful if you want an entire el' car to yourself, but it's decidedly not appreciated in civilized places. Reaching this state of affairs calls for seriously cleaning your shoes. After getting no help or advice from salespersons at local sporting goods stores or shoe companies, and after trial and error over a long time, I've found Dial Antibacterial Soap (the gold-colored, handwashing liquid in the pump bottle) my best discovery for cleaning running shoes. Remove the insoles and laces and immerse the shoes in lukewarm water. Apply the soap directly to the shoes and scrub, both inside and out, with a cellulose sponge; scrub the outside with a soft brush, but do not brush inside the shoes. Allow the soap to remain on the shoes for 15-20 minutes. Then again immerse the shoes in clear, cool water, swishing them vigorously; then rinse under running water. Finally, stuff the shoes with paper towels do not use newspaper because the ink will come off in the shoes. Putting the shoes in front of a fan will almost ensure that they'll dry overnight.

MY CHILDREN ARE SEVEN IN NUMBER
(trad./tune: "My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean") (1933)
Child labor in the coal mines (Lewis W. Hine, early 1900s)
In the winter of 1933, the coal miners of the twin valley towns of Davidson and Wilder in Tennessee went on strike. The one-industry towns were completely company-run. The miners were paid in scrip which could only be used at the company store . In fact, when the miners struck, the company turned off the electricity in town and took the doors off the miners' homes. But the miners held out. The company then turned the struggle into a lockout importing hired strikebreakers at better pay than the union had ever received, and protecting them with the National Guard. Leader of the striking miners was Barney Graham . At the end of April, Barney was shot by a Chicago gangster specifically brought in by the company for the job. A number of songs came out of this bitter strike in two little mining towns in Tennessee. Few labor songs have ever summed up the goals of a strike more precisely than this strangely-moving ballad. ''Shoes, shoes, we're striking for pairs of shoes.''

  • Sprinkle a teaspoon of Bicarbonate of Soda into each shoe, shake well to ensure the powder penetrates down to the toe and all over the inside of the shoe, and leave overnight - should do the trick. Place a sheet of dryer fabric softener into shoes after wearing. A sheet is good for about one week. (tip courtesey of G. C. Grainger.)
  • TIP - Gift wrapping Need to wrap a gift and have forgotten to buy the wrapping paper, here are some alternatives:-
    • Aluminium foil can be used as a substitute. To give it a textured look it can be rubbed gently against a brick wall, woodchip wallpaper, rough side of a piece of hardboard etc.
Old wallpaper offcuts, but make sure it is not the pre-pasted variety as this can be poisonous.

    Build your own dance floor.
Finishing with Duraseal Sprung floors Dance wax Wax will help on slippery floors. It won't, however, do any good on ULTRA-slippery floors since these tend to be the "sealed" variety. What will help, however, provided that you are using "chrome"-soles, is keeping the soles wet. Possible ways: a) Water. Tends to dry with surprising speed. And is hard to control. Your shoes will be either very sticky or not sticky at all. b) Coke, beer, lemonade etc. Sounds horrible, but does help. (especially if you find yourself on a slippery floor without having been prepared for it). c) Oil. More exact: high-quality gun-oil. I know that it sounds silly (I mean, after all oil is supposed to make things even more slippery, not sticky), but it really works. BUT: Oil might damage the uppers! All three methods would not normally hurt a sealed floor. They might, however, pose a danger to others who are using the same floor as a gym (running around in sport-shoes and such...). Hope that's of some help Sven From: MX%"ernst@ai.univie.ac.at" 21-SEP-1993 10:33:04.12 From: Ernst Buchberger

    Avoiding and Treating Blisters
    Michael L. Ramsey, MD
THE PHYSICIAN AND SPORTSMEDICINE - VOL 25 - NO. 12 - DECEMBER 97 W hether you hike, row, run, or shoot hoops, blisters are almost as much a part of the action as sweat isbut they don't have to be. You can take measures to avoid them. And if you develop a blister, you have several options for lessening the pain and lowering your risk of infection.
    Cause and Effect
Blisters form when the skin rubs against another surface, causing friction. First, a tear occurs within the upper layers of the skin (the epidermis), forming a space between the layers while leaving the surface intact. Then fluid seeps into the space. Soles and palms are most commonly affected for several reasons. The hands and feet often rub against shoes, skates, rackets, or other equipment. Blister formation usually requires thick and rather immobile epidermis, as is found in these areas. In addition, blisters form more easily on moist skin than on dry or soaked skin, and warm conditions assist blister formation.
    Keeping Blisters at Bay
To prevent blisters, you need to minimize friction. For the feet, this begins with shoe selection. Shoes should fit comfortably, with about a thumb's width between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Narrow shoes can cause blisters on the big toe and little toe. A shallow toe box can lead to blisters on the tops of the toes, while loose shoes can create blisters on the tips of the toes.

Foot Odor: How to Clear the Air
    Michael L. Ramsey, MD
THE PHYSICIAN AND SPORTSMEDICINE - VOL 24 - NO. 8 - AUGUST 96 F oot odor is seldom discussed around the water cooler. But many people suffer from this embarrassing and at times frustrating problem, particularly active people whose feet sweat a lot. Fortunately, foot odor can usually be controlled with simple measures (table 1). Table 1. Foot Odor Treatment at a Glance
    Washing
    • Wash briskly with antibacterial soap, including between the toes
    • Dry skin well (a hair dryer may help)
    Footwear
    • Wear absorbent socks and change them frequently
    • Wear shoes that "breathe"
    • Allow shoes to air out at least 24 hours after use
    Over-the-Counter Products
    • Antiperspirants can decrease moisture
    • Tea soaks may help
    • Benzoyl peroxide 5% or 10% gel applications may decrease bacteria
    Prescription Agents
    • Drysol (aluminum chloride hexahydrate 20%) at bedtime
    • Drionic* device for reducing perspiration
    • Erythromycin 2% or clindamycin 1% solution twice a day
    When to Consider Other Treatment
    • If above measures fail to cure foot odor in a few weeks
    • If the odor is accompanied by skin changes

Here it is: My Pack List!!!
    "Pack Light and Pack Tight!"
My wife and I take one (1) bag each a small backpack (ours are about 18 x 14 x 9 inches!) that will fit under the seat on any plane. We each also take one (1) small carry-on type bag, such as a fanny-pack, small day pack, etc... We NEVER check any luggage and have been able to hop earlier flights (sometimes first-class!) because we have no luggage to check!! The best travel advice I have for people unaccustomed to traveling light is: "Layout what you think you are going to need. Then, leave half of it home, and take more money." My wife and I pack the same amount of clothes for a week-long trip as we do for a 2 or 3 (or more!) month excursion. The difference between the two, is that we wash clothes more often on a 2 or 3 month excursion (usually in the sink)...Make sure that your clothes are lightweight, packable, wrinkle- proof , & are color-coordinated. This will save you precious time (and headaches!), because you can wear whatever you happen to pull-out of you bag never worrying if they are going to match or if they need to be ironed. All clothes go in the backpack, and the "other items" are distributed between the backpack & butt-bag (fanny pack)...Also, never wear a fanny pack on your fanny...Although I have a fanny pack, I sling it across my chest"bandoleir" style...Indeed!!!

    Athletes Foot and Fungus Problems
Athlete's foot typically affects the skin on the feet between the toes, but can move anywhere on the foot and can affect the toenails. Athlete's foot is an infection of the skin and the nails, usually on the feet. The infection is usually found on the skin between the toes. Sometimes the fungal infection spreads to the toenails, which become thick and distorted. Fungi are plant organisms (tinea pedis) such as mold and mildew and grow best in conditions that are moist. Bacteria may thrive as a secondary infection, which worsens the symptoms of the disorder and makes it more difficult to cure. A fungal infection is one of the most difficult nail and foot conditions to treat. It is common to catch athlete's foot from other people who have it by walking on floors that are moist or wet (e.g. at swimming pools and in shared bathroom facilities). Athlete's foot is also much more common in people who tend to have moist feet. Athlete's foot can also be spread by sharing other people's shoes or personal care items such as towels and wash cloths. Athletes Foot and Fungus may spread to the soles of the feet and to the toenails. It can be spread to other parts of the body, notably the groin and underarms, by those who scratch the infection and then touch themselves elsewhere.
